If you previously didn’t like coffee…how/what/who got you into it!

Lighthearted but I previously always claimed to ‘hate’ coffee…not sure why as always liked the smell. My sister got me into super weak lattes a few years ago and now I love nothing more than a strong black coffee. Funny how tastes change

I started drinking coffee in my 20s when I moved to a city and found Starbucks. But I would always have a hazelnut or vanilla latte....that was my gateway coffee drink. Then I feel like I hit 30 and suddenly my tastebuds changed and I didn't want the syrups anymore so I swapped to just having lattes with no sugar in them.

I have recently started to drink black instant coffee at home and work because I now do intermittent fasting. I would have never thought that possible and I recently had a black filter coffee and that was nice too so tastebuds can definitely change. I do still like a latte when at a café.....like a PP said I really begrudge paying £3 for tea when I can make a nice cup at home whereas I don't have bean to cup coffee at home. I can only drink a latte with skimmed milk though, the whole milk ones taste way too creamy for me.

I had a gingerbread latte with whipped cream at Costa a couple of years ago and it was absolutely disgusting. I couldn't drink it. Which surprised me a lot because 10 years ago I'd have loved it.

Tiramisu and lattes 😆 don’t have it often though, still prefer tea

SometimesCalmPerson · 30/10/2024 15:22

Age must have done it for me. Coffee was gross in my 20s, then it turned into the best thing ever.

My friend who was a big coffee drinker got me into it, I used to drink tea only. I could only manage a flavoured latte initially. I can drink ordinary americano coffee now but I'm still not keen on it black.

Waitingfordoggo · 30/10/2024 15:36

Weirdly, we were given very milky, very sweet coffee at nursery school. I liked it then. But haven’t liked it since. I’ve tried all sorts of coffee in all sorts of places, including places which supposedly make good coffee. But no. My taste buds can’t appreciate bitter flavours at all so it’s tea all the way for me.

I love coffee cake though.

RolaDisco · 30/10/2024 18:02

This is going to sound extremely wankified, but it’s true.

It was going to a decent, non chain coffee shop.
I randomly ordered the flat white one day, because the person in front did & it looked good 🤭 I was mesmerised by how the barista made it.
It was the most amazing coffee I’d ever tasted & that was the start of my coffee loving journey.
I started getting a coffee every morning from there on the way to work (I dread to think I much I must of spent)

Dh & I eventually invested in a Sage coffee machine. Luckily, he’s a coffee head too.

I still like a good cup of tea though.

Lockdown! When all you could do was walk with a takeaway hot drink, I got so sick on peppermint tea...

I love coffee now and drink it black no sugar. I do kind of miss my no caffeine life though, i don't think I realised how much of a flex that was health wise!

DilemmaDelilah · 30/10/2024 18:46

My DH didn't like coffee when we met and only occasionally would he drink something like a weak Mellow Birds instant coffee. Then he started having a latte in a coffee shop when I had one. We now have a coffee machine which he decided to buy!

reluctantbrit · 30/10/2024 18:50

I grew up in a coffee drinking family and while I loved the smell, I never got the taste drinking it.

Then we were in Rome for a holiday and the tea was awful. So we tried Cappuchinos. Now I am hooked.

I still can't drink anything black though.

naemates · 30/10/2024 19:08

Gilmore Girls were definitely an influence

Funkyslippers · 30/10/2024 19:14

I never hated it but got really into lattes, cappuccinos etc when I used to meet a talking group every week at Costa & we'd get a free drink. It all stopped during the pandemic & has never restarted which is a shame as I know lots of people really valued it

Funkyslippers · 30/10/2024 19:17

My job is working with vulnerable adults in the community and I've drunk more lattes, cappuccinos etc in the past year than I did in my whole life before! 🤣

user2848502016 · 30/10/2024 19:20

When I started 6th form we were allowed to make drinks in the common room, it was considered that tea was very uncool so I decided I just had to start liking coffee!
I started off with a weak, milky latte and worked up to something stronger.
I love a flat white these days

ihatecoffee · 30/10/2024 19:25

Still can't do coffee!
Love the smell but just cannot abide the taste....have tried lattes, cake and sweets and it's just revolting!

Also lingered on my breath just like a McDonald's does! IE it lasted forever 🤮

Rainbowdottie · 30/10/2024 19:36

I've always wanted to love coffee. Aside from the fact that I love the smell, coffee ice cream, coffee cake, the vibe and smell of a coffee shop....my husband is a massive massive coffee drinker. He lives for a coffee everytime we go out. He loves sitting in a coffee shop. I've never been able to drink any hot drinks. I've drunk tea in the past on occasion to "be polite" somewhere. I've managed to get myself to drink hot chocolate in an effort to try and join the coffee shop brigade, I so want to join. Sitting in a coffee shop, trying to string out an orange juice for 45 mins isn't much fun!

I'm 50 plus years old. Last summer I was just brave enough to walk into Starbucks and explain my dilemma! That I want to love coffee but so far I haven't so what can I try! She gave me a caramel frappacinno (sp) thing. I loved it. Truly. I spent all summer having it.

I then mentioned this to one of my younger colleagues lol. She told me that if I really like that, I should try an oat caramel latte. It's like the hot version of it. So I try it and loved it! I'm sure die hard coffee lovers will just laugh at it, say it's a cup of milk, but hey I've found a hot drink that I actually like and can join in with the coffee shop lot! I admit, I haven't expanded further but I will, it's given me some confidence to try!

Edit, I do quite like a mcdonalds coffee but just can't drink a whole cup (yet!)

hennybeans · 30/10/2024 19:37

I didn't like until I was 40. A waiter brought the wrong drink over and said I could just keep it, so I drank the latte and it was good. 5 years later and I love a really hot and strong cappuccino or a flat white if it's small.

Hoppinggreen · 30/10/2024 19:41

I always hated it but when I moved in with DH (who is a coffee snob) i realised that I hated instant coffee.
We had a cafitiere and bought good quality ground but now have a nice bean to cup machine.
I still hate instant and if its the only option i will drink tea instead or nothing

AnnaMagnani · 30/10/2024 19:41

Had an espresso at the end of a nice meal out.

For a while then that was the only time I had coffee.

Then DH got a mokka pot so will have that of a morning. Or double espresso at a coffee shop.

However it's espresso or nothing. Can't see the point of a latte.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 30/10/2024 19:49

I was a huge tea drinker but really didn't like coffee. Having my first child introduced me to the gateway coffees, flavoured lattes and mocha. My second child has me on the Americanos on the reg. we're not planning a third child but imagine I'd end up on triple espressos if we did. Or something stronger!!

cosietea · 30/10/2024 19:53

Not the question you asked but it made me think about if there ever was a time I didn't like coffee? And no, there wasn't. My mum gave it to me as a baby ( she'd be ripped to shreds now!) and then I'd have it before a school and take a flask with me to lessons. I don't actually remember a time when I didn't have coffee Confused

Iamnotalemming · 30/10/2024 19:55

Going to Italy and having a real expresso

No33 · 30/10/2024 20:02

A beautiful Italian man 😄

LordFartQuads · 30/10/2024 20:04

My family's coffee breath put me off it for life - even if I liked the taste I wouldn't eat it because of the monging breath after. Same reason I dont eat cheese and onion crisps anymore - boak!

XenoBitch · 30/10/2024 20:04

My mum got me onto oat milk latte, but with Lavazza coffee. So smooth and creamy.
The second best is an oat milk latte from Coffee #1, and in a takeaway cup.

Hedonism · 30/10/2024 20:05

Vanilla lattes were my gateway drug. They opened a coffee shop in our office building and if I went with colleagues I resented buying tea that I could have made with the tea bags in my desk drawer, 2 floors up!

I've progressed to black Americanos now.
