When a doctor asks how much you drink, what do you say?

You know the usual questions when you’re at a medical appointment- do you smoke/if yes, how heavily, do you drink/if so to what extent etc.

If you drink alcohol, how do you answer, and what does your drinking pattern actually look like?

Very little. Most weeks 0 units. Some weeks 2-4 units.

YorkshireIndie · 29/10/2024 10:27

Nothing with maybe the occasional glass of wine. I have two small things and a hangover is not fun. Lost interest in drinking when I gave it up for lent before I got married/pregnant

Zimunya · 29/10/2024 10:28

I tell the truth, but then I drink very little, which probably helps!

I answer honestly, most weeks nothing at all, only really drink when there is an occasion.

But I know my granda always says 5 pints a week, he’s always said that, despite the fact he easily drinks more than 5 pints 3 days a week!

FoxRedPuppy · 29/10/2024 10:29

I lie 😂. I actually drink about 2 bottles of wine a week. I usually say I drink half to one bottle a week.

ScaryGrotbag · 29/10/2024 10:30

Tell the truth. It's not in line with MN but I'll have between 1/2 a glass and two glasses four times a week and when I get together with my friends it's a bottle of wine.

I tell the truth - about one drink a month!

BeeCucumber · 29/10/2024 10:33

It’s doesn’t matter what you say, they won’t believe you!

ChaosHol1 · 29/10/2024 10:34

Well I was on holiday last week so drank every day. We only tend to drink at events these days. So prior to hols it was 6 weeks previously and then three weeks before that. I have a party this weekend but not drinking as been on antibiotics and then the next time will be 23rd November. I just say maybe once a month or couple of times at events only or on holiday, which is what I said in hospital on Sunday when asked. Wasn't really sure what relation it had to why I was there though to be fair.

VioletCrawleyForever · 29/10/2024 10:34

Not very much.

A couple of g&ts once a month.

buffyspikefaith · 29/10/2024 10:34

I say virtually none which is true
It's too complicated otherwise! I might have one drink then nothing for 3 years

Same

IOSTT · 29/10/2024 10:35

I tell the truth, as it’s MY medical history!

ChaToilLeam · 29/10/2024 10:37

I tell the truth, hardly ever during the week but a bottle of wine or some beers at weekends. Not so often spirits. My doc can’t help me with my health if I’m not honest with her.

mindutopia · 29/10/2024 10:40

I don’t drink anymore, but when I did, I lied and said about 20 units a week. Just a teeny bit more than I should but not enough to raise alarm bells.

Of the people I know who drink, many of them drink that in one evening a few times a week. It’s basically 4 glasses of wine. I know people who have 1-2 glasses a night. It adds up and is way too much. But people aren’t honest about it. Mostly because they aren’t honest with themselves.

Painauraison · 29/10/2024 10:40

I don't tell the truth for fear of being judged as a mother. I don't drink loads but some weeks it's 1 bottle of wine, and a pint at the pub or a couple of gins...

RB68 · 29/10/2024 10:44

Pretty much T Total. If its 1 -2 units a year that it. I had one last night, someones home made sloe gin. My anxiety been off the scale today only thing I can put it down to so wont be doing that again any time soon

mumda · 29/10/2024 10:44

As honestly as possible. Using normally the last week as an example.
The dentist asks too, and asks if you drink fizzy sweets and sweets. :(

GroovyChick87 · 29/10/2024 10:44

I've only been asked during pregnancy appointments so answered truthfully with zero units or none to very low amount while trying to conceive. I drink about 2 bottles a week now, if they asked I'd tell the truth. Over the week that's only really a glass a night. Or I might save it for the weekend and not drink during the week..

FadedRed · 29/10/2024 10:45

Like pp’s I tell the truth as I drink very little alcohol.

Areolaborealis · 29/10/2024 10:46

What I say is: "Sometimes after work or at the weekend - maybe a larger glass than I should, lol"

What I mean is: "I regularly exceed my recommended alcohol limit. I sometimes self medicate/drink to deal with stress which I realise is technically problematic but I'm not physically addicted and it gets me through life so I don't want a lecture"

Nothatgingerpirate · 29/10/2024 10:47

Nothing. No alcohol whatsoever.
And it's the best.

Edingril · 29/10/2024 10:47

I answer honestly because that is the point of them asking

Havalona · 29/10/2024 10:48

A doctor GP friend told me he doubles what people say about alcohol intake (in his head lol 😉).

In my case he would still get zero!
