What's your go to comfort food?

...when you're feeling under the weather? Mine are all childhood favourites and not particularly nice sounding, but I love them. 😂

Eggs in a cup with bread and butter.
Carrot and turnip mash with peas and onion gravy.
Mashed potatoes with fried eggs broken through.
Tea and toast (with the toast dipped in the tea).
Homemade vegetable soup, left brothy and chunky.
Tomato soup with cheese on toast.

I said to DH earlier that I think I'm coming down with something, and he asked if it was a carrot job or a soup job. 🤣 I also remember being given salad cream and plain salad sandwiches as a kid for lunch when I was ill. Sadly I tried that as an adult and didn't really enjoy it!

I love eggs in a cup when I'm poorly! Mashed up with salt and pepper and with buttered toast. Yum.
Also will do miso soup with ramen in, scrambled eggs on toast, and cheesy leek and potato soup.

Yes! Lovely lovely, all washed down with a nice big cup of sugary tea! Ooohhh miso soup and ramen is delicious, that sounds like a perfect poorly food! I remember as a student, there was a Vietnamese restaurant near the university. We'd all go in there and order big bowls of Pho to cure our Sunday morning hangovers! 😁

Tea, hot with a splash of milk, and toast with butter and honey

Soup with saltines

If my throat is really sore, I partially defrost frozen berries, and have them with yogurt and honey and powdered cloves.
It sort of freezes together so you have to eat it slowly but it helps

Carrot and turnip mash with peas and onion gravy.

That sounds delicious! But too much work when you're feeling ill.

Mine are:

-Tinned tomato soup with buttered white bread
-Mashed potatoes & gravy, maybe peas. There's a brand of dehydrated packet mash here in Oz called "Deb", just add hot water & butter and mmmm.
-Scrambled eggs on toast
-Risotto in the oven. No stirring, just throw in the ingredients & wait.

My Father sadly died in Sept, and when he was briefly home from hospital he wanted "Childhood Food"- which was lamb chops, mashed potato and baked beans. Was happy to oblige and it was great. He was born in 1948 so I guess not much has changed 😂

What exactly is eggs in a cup? How do you cook that?

ProvincialLady24 · 27/10/2024 02:42

Knorr chicken noodle soup

Cheese and tomato sandwich

Tea and toast

GoodVibesHere · 27/10/2024 04:28

Rice and egg is my comfort food. With frozen peas and corn, soy sauce, and butter. Yummmm.

JamNittyGritty · 27/10/2024 04:53

Tea with toast & marmalade or bean / veggie chilli with rice & loads of cheese or pasta (again with lots of cheese)

Morning all, some lovely sounding meals here! Just woken up from a particularly rough sleep and I might have to branch out and try some, as I feel like the living dead. 🤣

@DaftyLass Your yoghurt mix sounds delicious! What a brilliant idea, that's going on the list! First toast and honey though, that's made me actually hungry!

@Dustyblue So sorry to hear about your dad. I'm glad he got to have his childhood favourites, that's a lovely memory. Similarly, when my own dad was poorly before he passed, he went back to basics too. Colcannon was a big one, he couldn't get enough which I thought was really sweet.

Eggs in a cup is just two or three soft boiled eggs, lots of butter, salt, and pepper, and you mash them in a cup with a fork. Buttery bread on the side (or mixed through), or toast. Really warming! Also, oven risotto?! This sounds excellent!

@ProvincialLady24 Cheese and tomato sandwiches are food of the Gods. Lovely fresh tomatoes and thick cheddar cheese. 😍

@GoodVibesHere I'd love to like mac and cheese. I've only tried it in restaurants though, so maybe I need to try and make it myself so I can faff with the cheese/pasta levels!

@floorchid This sounds so nice. I used to tutor a group of Japanese students when I was in university, and this reminds me of their sick food. I think they also added shredded cabbage - it was delicious! Very soft and sticky rice.

@JamNittyGritty Cheese is the ultimate comfort. I like your style!

@TheDandyLion Mash and cabbage - oh now I can get on board with this. When I was little and my dad made cabbage, he'd give us the cabbage water to drink with loads of black pepper. Always made me feel better even if it was a bit smelly! 😁

Heinz tomato soup and white bread. Always have a tin in the cupboard. Its incredibly

Dustyblue · 27/10/2024 11:01

@GiddyRobin Colcannon!! I forgot about that. A meal in itself 😍

Deathraystare · 27/10/2024 13:51

mash potato
marmite on toast
Tomato soup
egg fried rice

BobbyBiscuits · 27/10/2024 13:55

Really nice posh baguette with Brussels pate.
Or a beef bourgignon/ beef and veg stew. Cooked for hours so the meat is really soft.
I'm also back into pizza right now. So a white pizza with mushrooms and truffle and spinach. And plenty of parmesan.

ffsgloria · 27/10/2024 13:56

Carby, fatty goodness mostly!

Cheese or peanut butter on buttered toast
Heinz tomato soup
Mac n cheese

GiddyRobin · 27/10/2024 14:14

You're all making me starving, and now I need a tin of tomato soup! I'm all about home cooked soup but nothing in this world beats Heinz! Lovely with cheese grated into it too.

@Dustyblue Yes! In Ireland it's old tradition to make it for Halloween; the kids want a buffet but I might do a little side of colcannon too! Keep them connected to their roots. 😁

@BobbyBiscuits That pizza sounds delicious! I love truffle - the local cheese shop sells this glorious truffle cheese every year, I think it's from Bulgaria? Oh my goodness. I've never tasted anything like it.

@ffsgloria @Deathraystare Do you each like marmite and peanut butter together? A lovely sandwich is peanut butter, marmite, and cheese. It sounds wrong but oh lordy me. Also, crumpets with marmite and a soft boiled egg.

Right, I need to get a late lunch. 😂 Sadly no tomato soup in, but I might have a cheese and tomato toasties with marmite on!

ffsgloria · 27/10/2024 14:34

@GiddyRobin love your username btw! I have never tried marmite, peanut butter & cheese together - or crumpets with marmite & soft boiled egg, will give those both a try!

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 27/10/2024 14:38

My go to is a heap of mash with alot of butter and salt and gravy. DHs is cold roast potatoes with slices of cheddar cheese

Parry5timesbeforedeath · 27/10/2024 14:39

Oh and my other favourite thing is sof white bread, real butter and alot of ham.

Despite being from a culture that does not eat meat.

GroovyChick87 · 27/10/2024 14:41

Something made in the slow cooker. Mince and mash, chicken casserole or some form of stew with buttered crusty bread. I also love mashed eggs with butter and salt as mentioned on this thread. I had it the other day on crispbreads and it really hit the spot.

Westfacing · 27/10/2024 14:46

I'm about to make myself an omelette which will have a huge amount of grated strong cheddar cheese & spring onions, and cooked in a big chunk of butter Smile

MrsClatterbuck · 27/10/2024 14:47

Baxters tinned tomato soup. As a child it was buttery mashed potato with garden peas or baked beans. I would still have this but the soup is much handier.

BearSoFair · 27/10/2024 14:48

Fish finger sandwich on the cheapest, claggiest white sliced bread you can find!

Namaqua · 27/10/2024 16:37

Just thought of another one but it might sound a bit weird (but is amazing when you're feeling poorly) - plain cooked rice with a knob of butter and some grated cheese mixed in, with salt and pepper. Blob of ketchup on the side. It's very good.

Namaqua · 27/10/2024 16:38

And cheesy crumpets, how could I forget them
