Is your heating still off?

DH put shoes on today and I put slippers on so I'm thinking the time is nigh.
Todays 'chilly toes' were the first time we looked at each other and wondered.
He's out at work all day but I work from home Mon-Fri so I'm expecting to notice the cold first.
So, not today, but socks deployed.

Our heating has been on for weeks. The thermostat is set at 20, unless the weather turns really cold.

username1478 · 26/10/2024 23:45

Yes and I'm wearing a T shirt (inside).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/10/2024 23:48

Yes - we’re in NE Scotland and the heating has been on.

RomainingToBeSeen · 26/10/2024 23:51

Ours is technically still off but have been putting it on for an hour or two as and when we need it. Trying to leave it another couple of weeks before it goes back onto a timer.

ByMerryKoala · 26/10/2024 23:54

As above, it's been on for weeks.

I put the Heston on when it's cold or we have too much condensation. Old house, no thermostat. It was on this morning but doors open this evening .

Is your heating still off?
OnNaturesCourse · 26/10/2024 23:55

It's been boosted a few times to take the edge off when the thermostat is below 16 and we're all wrapped up still feeling chilly but it's not on full time...yet.

I'm hoping to get to mid November before putting it back on its timer. Even then it's only getting to come on for a few hours in the morning while we get up, and a few hours around tea time. It will be set pretty low as standard as well, usually 17.5/18.

It was set at 20/21 in previous years but tbh it cost me a fortune and I just can't afford it thus year. I have even taken to turning the rads off in the bedrooms and unused rooms during the day, closing the doors and only heating the living areas.

Have invested in lots of snoodies and housecoats, plus hot water bottles for all. Due a baby in December and have purchased plenty warm grobags and grosuits etc.

Gowlett · 26/10/2024 23:56

No. Our place is quite warm.

PickAChew · 26/10/2024 23:58

MumChp · 26/10/2024 23:06

So it is dangerous to stay outdoor?
It's more or less <16 C all year round here outdoor.

Edited

How much time to you spend sitting and relaxing or sleeping outdoors?

GulfCoast · 27/10/2024 00:46

Usually have it on for one or two weeks a year (typically January or February).

Live in central Florida.

Quite a lot. Last week we spent two days and two nights outdoor.
Wasn't cold. We had 12 C at night.

I’ve seen threads like this on MN for years and I just can’t relate to people having their thermostats set so low. Ours it at 20 during the day, but regularly boosted I couldn’t cope with it being below 18.

Beezknees · 27/10/2024 06:42

Mine hasn't come on yet. It's currently set to come on if the temperature inside gets below 16 degrees and it hadn't yet. The weather outside is still around 14 degrees most days but it's due to drop below 10 next week so I expect the heating will come on then.

In the coldest months I'll set it to heat to 20 degrees for a couple of hours morning and evening.

littlelandlord7 · 27/10/2024 06:44

Yes, usually mid November for us.
Log burner has been on most evenings for the last month though

Potentiallyplausible · 27/10/2024 06:47

No, it’s still pretty warm for us- London. Nowhere near even thinking about putting heating on.

I thought the low temperatures around Tampa stayed in double digits all year round (so the locals love to boast, anyway!), even at night. So why would you need the heating on at all if it never goes below 12° outside? Sounds like you'd want aircon more than heating.

Topseyt123 · 27/10/2024 13:10

Ours is set to come on for a few hours morning and evening on the timer if the house temperature should drop below 18.5⁰c. So far it has only kicked in occasionally and for fairly short bursts.

S yes, it is set to "on", but isn't kicking in too much.

Scotland!
I've trained myself over the last few years to tolerate the cold. I don't enjoy it but I tolerate it .

I couldn’t deprive myself by “tolerating” being cold. Life is short

CeeJay81 · 27/10/2024 13:21

We put ours on, as and when. Our thermostat is right by the draughty front door(need to get it moved), so when you put it on 16 it's like 19 in the lounge. Have had it on a few times. Was 1 degree here this morning, so it was on for on for 1.5 hours.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 27/10/2024 13:21

My back is hurting today so although I’m sat with a hot water bottle against my back and a nice thick fleece on the doors to the garden are wide open. There’s no wind and the sun is shining on the south coast.

Sane.

Bedroom showed 24 today.

Maybe everyone in the flats above next to and below has put theirs on so we get that benefit too.

Iwontlethtesungodownonme · 27/10/2024 13:25

No heating here yet. The room I am in is currently 18° and quite comfortable.

Mines set at 17 and comes on as needed.

Same.

My heating is still off. But the house is starting to feel chilly.
The thermostat is set for it to come on at 13° during the day, 6° during the night. So far it hasn't got that cold yet . Thank goodness.

Oh dear me... I'm cold just reading this... 🥶🥶🥶🥶🥶

It's a toss up between tolerating the cold and putting the heating on and sitting worrying about what it's costing me . And sitting worrying rather takes the pleasure out of being warm.
