Dark Chocolate options disappearing?

Anyone noticed this trend? First it was the dark chocolate bounty, now the mint munchies are gone. I’m noticing the dark chocolate terrys orange is elusive this year in favour of the new terrys mint and and milk chocolate orange. Maya Gold seems to have disappeared as well. In the supermarkets here I used to be able to get dark chocolate Lindt with hazelnut or the Montezuma Black Forest But now I have to go to Waitrose in another town to get those.

I thought dark chocolate was popular but it seems to be disappearing off the shelves and as someone who dislikes milk chocolate this is very upsetting, what is going on???

There's probably not as much demand for it in the usual chocolate bars as it's not as popular as milk chocolate.

beeeeeeez · 21/10/2024 16:06

Co-op does a good 70% with salt in it.
Aldi Moser Roth also fantastic. They do/did a chilli jam bar that was to die for/from.

I'm more a 100% fan, and the choice there has decreased.

Ritter sport has gone up massively. Used to be £1.50. Then £1.65. Currently well over £2.00, maybe £2.30 😣

I got a bit of a shock when I realised how much they'd gone up by too!
Aldi does good chocolate, haven't got a Lidl near by yet to test out.

@Modusop I don't know if they have discontinued the After Eight Bitesize (previously Mint Munchies) permanently or whether they've just stopped making them temporally while they offer these special shapes for Christmas

Lidl is great for dark chocolate but it hasn't had my favourite - J D Gross Madagascan Dark Chocolate (70%) for a couple of months and they've now removed the label on the shelf. I'm very worried! Is this a nationwide shortage or just our part of South East London?!

Probably as dark chocolate is supposed to have a higher cocoa content (which is more expensive).
Replace the cocoa with sugar or fats etc - expect it’s cheaper to make.

I used to like chocolates, but in recent years, I'm frequently disappointed. I feel like I can mostly taste just the fat and the sugar.

Pinkbendyman · 21/10/2024 17:25

Ooh, that’s so odd - my DS wanted a dark chocolate Toblerone for his birthday earlier this month - none of the major supermarkets had them in stock, none on the Toblerone website either : (

I really do miss Red Bounty bars.

BestIsWest · 21/10/2024 17:31

Red bounty bars!

I was shocked at the cost of a bar of Lindt 85%. It’s not long since it was £1.90.

It's so annoying! DM is going through a phase of loving it and I can rarely find anything that's not Bournville. I can get a Lindt dark/hazelnut bar in our petrol station but it's £4.95 a time 😢

Yikes, but yes it is very expensive! Just tried a bit of the Dark Chocolate Ritter Bar with Peppermint cream as an alternative to mint munchies not identical but very nice.

I'm glad to see others are also missing the Red Bounty Bars, they were my favourite, the milk chocolate version is just too sweet.

@helleborus I'll certainly stock up on these while they are available.

I've just discovered there's a dark chocolate Ferrero Rocher bar but it was discounted in the supermarket despite having a long use-by, so IDK how long it will be on the shelves.

Modusop · 21/10/2024 18:15

@Pinkbendyman It's definitely a thing, dark chocolate is being phased out probably as other have said due to the cost of producing it, very sad indeed.

@MiraculousLadybug Yeah I tried that and it was quite nice, prefer the Lindt Dark Hazelnut though, wouldn't be surprised if it does vanish.

Dark chocolate is horrible but like anything if it doesn't sell it won't be made

P1PSqueak · 21/10/2024 18:19

I’ve been thinking the reverse. Hoards in Sainsbury’s. Too many dark higher end options and not enough milk.

TheKneesOfTheBees · 21/10/2024 13:12

I've been stockpiling the Waitrose No 1 90% bars each time I go in as they're on offer for £1.80, which seems the cheapest you can get higher % dark chocolate at the moment. I've not looked in Lidl, but I think the Aldi one contains emulsifier.

Yeah I got one of them with the orange filling, not tried it just yet. I don't really live near a Waitrose unfortunately but they have a better selection of the dark stuff. Got some dark chocolate covered gingers as well last time.

Is dark chocolate the in name for what we used to call 'plain' chocolate?

I tend to lump it all together although I know that's not technically correct. 😅 I just like something with a bit of actual flavour as opposed to milk chocolate which to me is an overwhelmingly sickly sugary milky flavour.

Dark chocolate is only for us sophisticates and not for the hoi polloi 😉

Ooh I must try this!

Also, on the topic of Waitrose, we're nowhere near a Waitrose but we can oddly still get them to deliver to us, would that be an option for you? I suppose you'd have to make up a minimum order though.

PolaroidPrincess · 21/10/2024 18:26

Asda used to do a lovely bar of Dark Mint but that's gone now too it seems.

HelloYouGuys · 21/10/2024 18:29

My usual (large) Tesco used to sell dark Malteasers... they've since stopped stocking it.
My partner bought me a years supply from eBay... luckily I'm pretty self disciplined, Elsie all those packets of dark Malteasers would def be a tease, and they'd be gone in a month.

I tried dark kit-kat, and that was enjoyable.

Mostly tho, I prefer choc that's at least 85%.... my fave is the Montezuma orange and geranium flavour.... oh gosh I so love that sensation.

I used to love the Aldi Moser Roth chilli jam mousse choc, but not been able to purchase that for roughly three years... such a shame coz I do enjoyed it.

NiggleNoggle · 21/10/2024 18:30

The Lidl Madagascan one is very good. I buy the Montezuma.. but that is 100% and very bitter (which means I can only eat a tiny amount!)

TheSnugHare · 21/10/2024 18:30

Well I’ve noticed that it’s gone up loads in price cos I used to be able to get a bar for about a £1 or £1.75 and now it’s more like £2.75 or even £3+ and the bars are shrinking
