Dark Chocolate options disappearing?

Modusop · 21/10/2024 11:36

Anyone noticed this trend? First it was the dark chocolate bounty, now the mint munchies are gone. I’m noticing the dark chocolate terrys orange is elusive this year in favour of the new terrys mint and and milk chocolate orange. Maya Gold seems to have disappeared as well. In the supermarkets here I used to be able to get dark chocolate Lindt with hazelnut or the Montezuma Black Forest But now I have to go to Waitrose in another town to get those.

I thought dark chocolate was popular but it seems to be disappearing off the shelves and as someone who dislikes milk chocolate this is very upsetting, what is going on???

Ooh I must try this!

Also, on the topic of Waitrose, we're nowhere near a Waitrose but we can oddly still get them to deliver to us, would that be an option for you? I suppose you'd have to make up a minimum order though.

Can you imagine a £40 delivery entirely of dark chocolate products! The shame!

I get mine from a local shop which sells organic, refills, local produce etc.
The owner is a chocolate fiend and has all manner of milk and dark chocolate, very wide range of flavours.
Currently enjoying plum and brandy and a Christmas pudding flavours
Not cheap £3.50 to 4.50 a bar, but does last me several days.
I get my refills every 2 weeks or so and treat myself to a couple of bars

I have already bought this year's Christmas dark chocolate oranges because I now get them as soon as I see them because they can be hard to get.

Ah but the thrill!

CharlotteLucas3 · 21/10/2024 19:00

Waitrose 72% is good value compared to the others... £2.50 for 180 grams. I just ate twice as much though so I wouldn't recommend!

Tony's 70% is my current favourite (even though I don't rate the milk choc) but I've only found it on Ocado. Oh and Montenzuma cherry.

I eat Lidl dark chocolate quite often. I'd say it's adequate at best. But it's as good as M&S which has surprisingly awful chocolate.

Villagetoraiseachild · 21/10/2024 19:00

I used to love the dark side of chocolate, but I had to step away as it became something of a migraine roulette.
Lidl does dark chocolate ginger biscuits which are lovely, though I have to ration myself.

I'm now worried about Elizabeth Shaw mints for Christmas.
I love the round ones but my favourites are the rectangular ones with fondant center.

There is more and more proper dark chocolate in supermarkets now. Not sure about the bars you refer to as for me they aren’t “dark” and are still very sweet. Look at the plain bars and there is a lot of choice.

Gonksmum · 21/10/2024 19:18

My favourite is Lidl's dark choc ( 70%) with salted caramel as find some plain 70% bars a little bitter. There are some smooth dark bars of 70-80% cocoa solids out there, I'm sure, but, as you said, they're hard to find (Galaxy 70% dark was delicious but no longer available in my local Morrison's).

dark chocolate bounty 😢😢😢
at least now I know that I’m not the only one who’s missing it.

I miss it too, it was my favourite 😢

Is dark chocolate the in name for what we used to call 'plain' chocolate?

Yes

PolaroidPrincess · 21/10/2024 19:38

Has anyone tried M&S Dark chocolate with raspberry? It's only 60% but oh my!

mitogoshigg · 21/10/2024 11:54

Lidls is good

Seconded. The 85% one is my favourite over all other chocolate.

Ooh, that’s so odd - my DS wanted a dark chocolate Toblerone for his birthday earlier this month - none of the major supermarkets had them in stock, none on the Toblerone website either : (

My DH loves these and we cannot find them anywhere either ☹️
Milk, blonde, white, orange - all the other flavours. My DM is going to Denmark soon, hoping she can pick him one or 2 up from there ( or the airport!)

I get this too so I do have to be careful not to overdo it. I have certainly triggered migraines by scoffing too much dark chocolate, luckily I seem to be able to eat a small bar or a few rows without too much trouble

Good to know they are still out there! I will keep my eyes peeled for them!

@Mbear - hope he has better li l at the airport than we did. Not a single dark chocolate toblerone to be seen at Heathrow in August - we were looking for them.

Glittertwins · 22/10/2024 05:24

Better luck

Probably as dark chocolate is supposed to have a higher cocoa content (which is more expensive).
Replace the cocoa with sugar or fats etc - expect it’s cheaper to make.

This ^

there are recipes and ideas for replicating bounty etc on tick tick

so perhaps have a go making them with dark chocolate

Mbear · 22/10/2024 07:10

Noooooooooooo 😭😭😭 @Glittertwins

I did find a M&S Dark chocolate mountain bar last night when I was googling to see if I could buy a dark toblerone. I might have to see if they have them in the shops at the weekend.

Samphire44 · 22/10/2024 07:20

I would have assumed it is in response to changes in market demand. People that enjoy dark chocolate now being more aware of all the other rubbish that is put in the branded chocolate and opting more for the plain chocolate bars.

The Lidl Madagascan one is very good. I buy the Montezuma.. but that is 100% and very bitter (which means I can only eat a tiny amount!)

But can you still buy it (the Madagascan)? It's no longer available in our local Lidl and I'm getting desperate.
