Why have they changed the National Rail app?

It's crap now! Whose bright idea was that? 🙄

I'm especially annoyed as this was the first app I ever paid for - £4.99 I think, 10 years or so ago. What really really winds me up is that our train station now only gets two trains an hour (thanks Covid) but I can't see "live" trains. I can only see "live" trains to specific destinations and after th quarter hour. So if I want to see live trains and it's 9:05 right now, I can only see them from after 9:15. And I have to separately look for trains going in different directions (which is annoying as, again, due to the 2 an hour issue, sometimes it's actualyl more practical to go in the WRONG direction and then catch a "fast" train from a bigger station one stop up the way).

I am furious.

Is there a complaint nbutton do you think?

DappledThings · 15/10/2024 21:47

It's awful. Headache inducingly awful.

Bigroy · 15/10/2024 21:47

I thought it was just me! I'm appalled at how crap it is now - was so handy for checking next trains etc

Oh yes, this too. I used to be running for the train and coul djust click on my favourite station to see how it was going... now it's so bloody tedious and time consuming I have to stop and put my glasses on. And also, as mentioned, still can't get live trains for the next few minutes.

I am so angry about it. I'm actaully really pleased to see I'm not the only one.

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 15/10/2024 21:50

Agree, it's clunky and difficult to navigate.

januarysnowdrop · 15/10/2024 21:52

It's really rubbish now. Try the Railboard app instead: it seems to do everything that the old National Rail app used to before they decided to make it crap.

Thiswayorthatway · 15/10/2024 21:52

Agreed

parietal · 15/10/2024 21:54

The Trainline app is pretty good. There is sometimes a booking fees for buying tickets but everything works and you can track trains easily

NeverDropYourMooncup · 15/10/2024 21:59

No option for disabled travel now, I see (other than using the railcard for them to try to sell you the most expensive trip - it should be a bit of a clue, by all rights).

I'd really rather not be directed to have to change at Clapham with the giant leaps you have to make on and off the platforms - and I'm sure that somebody who doesn't know you need a stepladder and a parachute for there would appreciate the ability to exclude any stations with bugger all access in advance.

Heap of crap. Bet somebody's made a fortune for bringing that online.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/10/2024 22:16

Glad it's not just me, it was so handy for quickly looking at , near impossible now.

Will look at the other apps suggested.

You can't pin a train anymore. This was so handy with a tight connection.

Yes I can find it in arrivals but it's a pain.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 15/10/2024 22:22

I don't have that issue with live trains. I can see one right now due to leave my local station at 22:27.

Weird. Maybe I need an update?

Needmorelego · 15/10/2024 23:24

I find it easier to use the websites of the specific train companies (Southern, East Midland Trains, Thameslink etc) than National Rail.
They just own the track - not run the trains.

socks1107 · 15/10/2024 23:26

It's awful and slow! I hate the update

LegoTherapy · 15/10/2024 23:34

I hate it too and used it regularly.

AliMonkey · 15/10/2024 23:37

On Live Trains page I can see all trains leaving my local station now and at any time. So including one leaving in 2mins and including trains to all stations.

On Plan a Journey you have to give destination and it has to be after next 15min mark. So @MrSeptember are you sure you’re looking at the right page?!

AliMonkey · 15/10/2024 23:38

@Needmorelego using train company websites is no help if your local station is served by more than one train company!

feelingrobbed · 15/10/2024 23:47

It's so fucking annoying.
DH's hasn't changed yet and he had no idea what I was complaining about last week.

Needmorelego · 15/10/2024 23:56

@AliMonkey true - although different train companies have different routes so even if it's a "shared" station the different train companies usually aren't following exactly the same routes. If you know which train company you need I find it easier to go directly through them (personally that is - I know different people find it easier to use different websites).

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 16/10/2024 00:24

Weirdly I can't find the Trainline or Railboard apps

OP posts:
dayslikethese1 · 16/10/2024 02:53

Yes it's terrible now. I've uninstalled it, just gonna use Trainline from now on.

rainfallpurevividcat · 16/10/2024 02:57

I think it has been made more crap on purpose to limit delay repay. I used to check the app to see exactly how late my train had been, now you can't see infornation on trains that have arrived or even for the one you are on to see how late it is!

HappyHolidai · 16/10/2024 03:57

The GWR app is pretty good. Also Cross Country.

HilaryThorpe · 16/10/2024 04:56

We live in Normandy and the geolocation on the new app has put us in the Isle of Wight. This reminds me of one of the early road navigation systems which used to want to send you from Bournemouth to London via the Isle of Wight (involving two ferries). 😂
