Fragrances of the decades!

For me the 90s are Sunflowers - Elizabeth Arden, but I grew up in the US so not sure if it was the same in the UK? Every girl I knew doused herself in Sunflowers.

What about the other decades?

This was popular in the 60’s/early 70’s…a flat pallet of creamy/oily gunk that you rubbed on with your finger!
before this no self respecting young teen would be without Avon pretty peach
After that paint box thing girls gravitated to either aqua manda or patchouli…not sure which was worse!
Then along came Gingham (girls version of Brut) and Meadowsong…made you stink as if you’d fallen into a lawnmower box!
Happy days!

Fragrances of the decades!

Chanel no 19 and no 5 I associate with the 1880s, although they were from the 1970s and 1920s respectively.
Clinique’s Aromatics reminds me of the 1990s.
I remember one of my university lecturers in 1988 saying he nearly passed out from the fug in the lecture room - Body Shop Dewberry and White Musk shower gel, body lotion and perfume all the way.

Mapoftheproblamatique · 08/10/2024 18:11

Tribe - as a teenager in the nineties I adored this. I can still remember the smell now despite it being discontinued decades ago.

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichorJessica McClintock is a white floral described as Lilly of the valley top note but honestly it’s subtle and perfumers describe Lilly of the valley as “mute”. I have tried to switch to other Lilly of the valley scents including the OG of them all DIOR but always go back. You can find on Amazon or I buy it right out of the case at my USA Walmart. It has a long shelf life I’ve never had one go bad. I do think some scents transcended time and if it were repackaged and rebranded it would be popular again.

Sold!! I will order some 😂

fluoxe · 08/10/2024 18:17

Does anyone remember Victoria’s Secret Peach Hyacinth, I think it was called? I loved that. Wish I could find it again!

80s for me was Paris by YSL
90s was Coco Chanel
2000 is Chanel 19.

PrideoftheThames · 08/10/2024 18:24

late 80s/early 90s for me was Ysatis (still wear it in winter, sorry!), Giorgio Beverly Hills & Giorgio Wings. Oh, and the original Eau De Givenchy (still wear it in summer).
90s was Issy Miyake & CK Eternity.
Late 90s, Ralph Lauren Safari and Ralph Lauren Romance.

Don’t think so it was the same era as Aqua Manda possibly the same manufacturer it was advertised in Jackie

Have remembered it was by Goya in a white bottle think it was meadowsweet.

HopeSpringsInfernal · 09/10/2024 13:09

70s - Gingham
80s Rive Gauche, Mitsouko
90s Very Valentino - lovely, but discontinued
00s Sun Moon & Stars - I can't remember what this smelled like
2010s - Penhaligon's Bluebell, Donna Karan Cashmere Mist - beautiful and light, designed so you had to be close to someone before you could smell it on them. Now discontinued, I wish they'd bring it back
Now - Hermes L'ombre des Merveilles

potplantsinparadise · 09/10/2024 13:15

The 90s had a fruity and jungly era: Tribe, Exclamation!, Dewberry, Tresor, Calyx, Les Belles Di Ricci.

Cluckinchicken · 09/10/2024 13:54

80's Jai Ose, Guy Laroche
Fidji, Guy Laroche
Cinnabar, Estee Lauder
JHL, Estee Lauder (aftershave but loved it)
90's Aromatics Elixir, Clinique
DK, Donna Karen (again aftershave, but absulouty gorgeous fabulous

Bottle, still have an empty one)
Aramis Devin (another aftershave! the blue box)

I have toyed with many since and not found any I really like, but did buy some Fidji but did not smell the same, again same with a bottle of Aqua Manda, just not 'orange' enough.

I am shocked at the price of perfumes these days, I spray some and think oh thats quite nice, but nope not paying £££

Misfitkickedoutonthestreet · 09/10/2024 14:48

My teen dd wears ck one - it’s come back round again. I love it - it smells like summer in New York in the 90s when I was there for a bit, dressed in Gap, wishing I was Rachel from Friends.
Calvin Klein seemed way ahead of the times with the whole ‘unisex’ perfume thing - though I have never met a man wearing it! It’s a great smell, and clearly did something right as still on sale. A lot of the ones on this thread I don’t think are around anymore ( I used to love CK truth, which smells like early 00s to me but it’s been discontinued)

Afriendwithbreastsandalltherest · 09/10/2024 17:59

Ghost was a perfume big in the 90s, they smelled quite nice if I remember.

Maddy70 · 09/10/2024 18:10

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 09/10/2024 18:27

Anais anais when I 'borrowed' my mums
Dewberry / white musk
Davidoff cool water
Ck one
Gucci rush

All so evocative of the time for me. I'm now on Gucci flora.

heartsinvisiblefury · 09/10/2024 19:21

Calvin Klein has spanned all decades for me - Eternity and Obsession and CK One! Fabulous enduring scents

Pedallleur · 09/10/2024 19:25

Poison and Opium were the gifts that kept giving. You could be overpowered in an office or lift. Poison was everywhere. Forgot about Miyake. That was lovely.

Thinking back that range changed the market. Seemed so modern and young and has become a classic. Rive Gauche or Left Bank. The model had a blue scarf in the ads and looked so chic. Why has that image stuck with me

purser25 · 10/10/2024 11:09

Had forgotten about Charlie. A lot of people seemed to wear cheaper perfumes when I was a teenager

DilemmaDelilah · 10/10/2024 15:55

1970s was definitely Charlie. Everyone wore it!

the80sweregreat · 10/10/2024 16:09

You could buy the blue Charlie for around 2 pounds or something at the end of the 70s! ( maybe less ) My mum used to tut that I was wasting my money.
It was a strong perfume though , but very distinctive

potplantsinparadise · 10/10/2024 16:15

I mean I think we wore cheaper 'perfume' in the 90s, in that we marinaded ourselves in Impulse 'Free Spirit'.

PennywisePoundFoolish · 10/10/2024 16:17

AutumnLeaves1990 · 08/10/2024 14:16

Exclamation circa 1990

This was my vote, the advertising jingle is scorched into my memory. "Ex-Cla-Mation make a statement without saying a word!"
Also BodyShop scents but the names escape me

Mary46 · 10/10/2024 17:22

Loved Charlie too. I love CK One too. Lou Lou scent would knock you out ha.
