New Romantic blouse from the 1980s, how

Please can anyone tell me what people wore these with back then and how to style it? I picked up a cream coloured original at a vintage market recently. I was thinking skinny jeans or leggings with heeled courts/pumps. Any inspiration? Thankyou!

Could you post a pic of the top? I don't think of New Romantic as a cream coloured blouse, so trying to imagine what it looks like?

You need peddle pushers, a scarf around your waist and pixie boots! That's how we wore our high neck mutton arm blouses (that buttoned up at the back) in the 80s.

Definitely not skinny jeans or high heels.

Are you watching 'Joan'? The main character's sister is a brilliant depiction of this style.
We wore tight satin trousers at the under 18's Disco.
Also look at old footage of the Human League girls.

You need dark blue velvet knickerbockers!

tothesea · 02/10/2024 00:10

I wore them with super tight dark blue ‘stretch’ jeans leg warmers and tukka boots. Lashings of blusher, roller ball lip gloss and a bit of gold spray in my rock hard hair..good to go!

I wore mine with electric blue pedal pushers with gold piping down the sides. Or if I was dressing to impress, I paired it with a black leather pencil skirt with matching jacket and which had the biggest shoulder pads you'd ever seen, and black patent 6" heels. Those were the days!

Think David Bowie in Labyrinth. Grey leggings and a tight leather waistcoat.

augustusglupe · 02/10/2024 00:46

Ahh 1981…
wore mine with bright red balloon trousers and red low heeled court shoes.
My favourite look was tucked into my burgundy leather shorts.
By late summer/Autumn I’d progressed to a more hardcore futurist look of black leather skirt with a zip up the back, black leather biker jacket, seamed stockings and high red or black courts. Shortish black hair sleeked back with stacks of gel and a few long strands pulled forward. Dark eyes and very red lips.
They were indeed the days!!

In 1981 age 17 on a night out in a nightclub I wore mine with burgundy knickerbockers, cream tights, pointed flat shoes, Princess Diana hair with lots of flicks, big gold earrings in the shape of birds, lots of purple and sparkly green eyeshadow and plum lipstick and lip gloss.

EarthyMamma · 02/10/2024 02:04

Oh those were the days indeed!

I wore my pirate blouse with red and gold striped knickerbockers and 5in black patent heels (by Bally, I used to save up to get them from the'best' shop in town).
I wore this look to work in a library.! 📚 ☺️

Clothes were such fun then.

Black knickerbockers here, with a watered silk jacket and numerous scarves around my waist.

DanielaDressen · 02/10/2024 05:51

Adam and The Ants was my first thought. Not sure all the talk of knickerbockers is helping the OP. 😁

Happyinarcon · 02/10/2024 06:01

I wore stripy leggings and a longish black velvet waistcoat with gold buttons

Pillowfights · 02/10/2024 06:15

I wore my voluminous blouse with burgundy knickerbockers & burgundy pixie boots, thought I was the bees knees!

Also wore with a dirndle type skirt, (black & white) a la Bananarama style.

Probably looked ridiculous most of the time back then but I have fond memories

Eyerollexpert · 02/10/2024 06:22

Reading this brought back some great memories. Pixie boots for me!

You know, I've just realised how much Steampunk owes to the New Romantics and Goths!

Also, fellow 1980s fashion nostalgics - take a look at Yves St Laurent's S/S 25 collection.

I loved these! I turned a pair of cord trousers into knickerbockers to wear with.

unsync · 02/10/2024 06:51

Puffy - skirts and trousers were puffy, the more fabric the better. And big hair, if you're not using at least a can of hairspray and backcombing, you're doing it wrong.

Funderthighs · 02/10/2024 06:58

I wore mine with black, velvet knickerbockers and big earrings. I was the bees knees! 😂

rockstarshoes · 02/10/2024 07:09

Skinny jeans but skinny jeans like you get now didn't exist soo I used to sew them narrower from the knee to the ankle & then they were really hard to get on 🤣.
Burgundy pixie boots.

catin8oots · 02/10/2024 07:18

I really want some knickerbockers now! Why have they never come back?

It’s amazing any of us have got any hair left given what we did to it in the 80s 😂

unsync · 02/10/2024 10:02

@BananaNirvana So much peroxide, SunIn, spray, gel, heat and crimping. Crispy and crunchy helmet hair. 🤣
