Please can anyone tell me what people wore these with back then and how to style it? I picked up a cream coloured original at a vintage market recently. I was thinking skinny jeans or leggings with heeled courts/pumps. Any inspiration? Thankyou!

I really want some knickerbockers now! Why have they never come back?

Do what we did in the early 80s and make some from trousers! Cut off the leg below the knee and make a cuff from the remaining fabric.

Anyone remember getting white plimsolls and t shirts and painting them? Also slashes in T shirts

Oh no I accidentally said the p word… I meant to say anyone remember getting “white canvas shoes” and t shirts and painting them

Either knickerbockers and pixie boots as above or with a very gathered midi skirt (dirndl style, often corduroy) and pointed kitten heels in a tonal colour

PassingStranger · 02/10/2024 13:42

I had one in the 80s.

I didn’t think you could use the p word on Mumsnet? 😁. Didn’t there used to be an automatic block?

I wore mine with a velvet waistcoat and a long tartan type skirt - it was blue and grey I think. Plus Pixie boots.

Skinny jeans but skinny jeans like you get now didn't exist soo I used to sew them narrower from the knee to the ankle & then they were really hard to get on 🤣.
Burgundy pixie boots.

Oh I did this too by hand! They went stretchy either so it was a lie down on the bed job to get them on. Wore with pixie boots.

Black satin pedal pushers.

JustToBeMe · 02/10/2024 19:08

I was approximately 11/12 when Lycra came jeans, so 1977/78.
I was on a school residential when a 'popular' girl wore them for the first time...
After that my mum used to 'take my jeans in' on her sewing machine!
I still wear skinny jeans now 40+ years later 🤷‍♀️

Wear what you like and feel comfortable in, sod those that say differently!!!

Aussiegold · 02/10/2024 19:10

Teamed mine with Burgundy balloon trousers that buttoned at the ankle, flat bronze ballet pumps, a lot of turquoise and gold makeup and enough bangles to make one shoulder droop.....

Vague recollection of boyfriend matching his with leather trousers and a very heavy bullet belt.

Lindy2 · 02/10/2024 19:14

Velvet peddle pushers. Mine were burgundy and I had a matching burgundy velvet waistcoat.

Tight blue jeans would also be OK or satins. I never had any satins because my mum wouldn't buy me any. Still to this day I regret never being able to wear super shiny skin tight satin trousers to the school disco. 😂

Divebar2021 · 02/10/2024 19:24

I had slightly balloon cut trousers that were coated and looked ( to my 13 year old mind) like leather. I also wore red suede pixie boots which I wore to death. When you look at the Human League girls they don’t actually look that far out in their style. Probably their hair is the biggest give away of era.

Lycra jeans with pixie boots or pedal pushers with ballet pumps

You need peddle pushers, a scarf around your waist and pixie boots! That's how we wore our high neck mutton arm blouses (that buttoned up at the back) in the 80s.

Definitely not skinny jeans or high heels.

Exactly this.

Following as intrigued as to which of these ideas OP will go for!

Normallynumb · 02/10/2024 23:53

Those were the days( I was 17 in 1981)
Google pics of Human league to get the idea
I wore mine with pedal pushers so tight I had to lie on the bed to zip them up
Love that my teen choices are now called vintage or retro!.. I'm 59 but 18 in my head
