It's cold and miserable outside, we've lit the fire for the first time, dinner is cooked, we're up to date with all the TV we follow... It's the perfect evening for a film!

There are very few films we both agree on - we have Amazon, Netflix and Disney, What films, from the last 2-3 years, fit the following criteria:

Not sci-fi or fantasy
Not a rom-com
Not a horror/gory

A drama or comedy would be good. If drama, not doom & gloom/depressing.

Wise MNers - what should we watch this evening?!

Wicked Little Letters on Netflix

Good call. Plus The Lost Daughter. Olivia Coleman is brilliant in both and two entirely different focuses.

What We Did On Our Holiday

What did you do?

Also saw a couple of months ago - 45 Years. It is a 2015 film, but up to date with a slow but deep story. Charlotte Rampling and that Northern bloke.

Oh and The Father. Anthony Hopkins - no one delivers lines like he. I think that Coleman lady might be in that too. But pissed so not sure.

Plus that Belfast one in black and white, directed by that bloke who was Henry V, also filmed in black and white early 90's. Can't recall his name. Married to Emma Thompson I think and someone else.

Spetses. It was filmed in Spetses. Been there.

Oh yes. That Father was brilliant. Very well made. And yes that Coleman lady IS in it. She's always fab.

I remember the car advert. "We had one of those". Can't remember the car now. But it was Olivia's first film, or she might be Sarah or Sophie by birth. SDomething like that.

I wouldn’t recommend The Father for a fun evening, although it is very well acted. DH and I were in tears as both of us had a parent living with dementia.

A touching film about a Nova Scotia naïf painter (Sally Hawkins) and her surly husband (Ethan Hawke) is “Maudie”.

Either of the Knives Out films, but definitely the first if you haven't seen it.

@mumonthehill just wanted to say thank you! I came on to find a film and determined not to do hours of scrolling. There you were with "young woman and the sea" second comment in. I absolutely loved it. It was just what I needed. Incredible story that I knew nothing of - that changed the course of women's sport forever.

Still on Disney.
