YES and come back and tell us

the80sweregreat · 29/08/2024 09:25

It's a marmite programme, you'll either like or hate it.
(I haven't rewatched it, but I might now as forgotten a lot of it.)

Porridgeislife · 29/08/2024 09:26

Yes! I’m jealous of anyone who gets to watch it for the first time ❤

BorisJohnsonsPhysique · 29/08/2024 11:42

Fleabag’s behaviour in the first series is self-destructive.

In what way is it like Miranda? Do you mean the asides to the camera?

Miranda hit our screens with similar levels of 'oh my God it is so brilliant' sycophantic reviews only for many people to think 'meh'.

Oh I see, you mean the hype was similar to that of Miranda. I was confused because they're very different beasts, no less because Miranda is very slapstick.

Beth216 · 28/08/2024 11:26

I couldn't get past the first episode as I found her so dislikeable in a tedious way.

This. Just shows how subjective humour is.

Hoplolly · 29/08/2024 12:50

I don't think it's anything like Miranda. Uh Miranda was insufferable.

Peakpeakpeak · 29/08/2024 13:00

I don’t think it was supposed to shock, I think it was meant to be relatable.

“She’s like a male idea of what a liberated woman is”- yes, I think this is the point the show is making though (did you watch past ep 1?). She’s not ‘liberated’, she’s traumatised.

I really enjoyed it, anyway.

Yes, exactly.

And there really isn't a great deal of sex in there. Yeah, there's that one joke about anal, but other than that it's just enough to demonstrate that she's self-destructive and grieving, and the sexual behaviour feeds into that.

IceStationZebra · 29/08/2024 13:00

I’m a fan. Need to rewatch it.

I do find it odd that people are put off by not liking her or relating. She is not supposed to be a likeable or necessarily relatable character; many of her actions are objectively bad. That’s the point of it. Episodes like the art exhibition play her behaviour off against other poorly behaved characters and it’s delicious.

Gemstonebeach · 29/08/2024 13:02

I really liked it. Season 2 is better then season 1.

TheMarzipanDildo · 29/08/2024 13:02

It’s nothing like Miranda, bar the fourth-wall breaking.

(I liked Miranda too but am a bit ashamed to admit it Blush had no idea that it was hyped up at the time, people are always very sniffy about it on MN)

Definitely. And the first series does take a little while to get going.

I thought it was a serious drama 😀 will give it a go

It kind of is. Serious comedy drama.

Miranda was irritating but not a bad person. Fleabag did some really horrible things to people.

Alanfarthing · 29/08/2024 13:23

Absolute boring drudge. Middle class woman thinks sweariness and sexual openness is groundbreakingly funny. It's not.

jokish · 29/08/2024 13:28

cardibach · 28/08/2024 12:41

I didn't even get to the end of the first episode. Self conscious and unfunny - one of those that thinks a bit of swearing and sex is edgy. Hate the 'breaking the 4th wall' thing at the best of times.
I seem to be a minority of one though.

You can't have an opinion on something you haven't actually watched!

Crunchymum · 29/08/2024 13:35

I enjoyed it, but some of it was just unnecessarily gratuitous. Felt the same about Catastrophe. Really enjoyed Fleabag (and Catastrophe) and watched every episode but there were a few moments I found very cringey!

If anything I felt they (both F & C) were trying too hard to be shocking?

beguilingeyes · 29/08/2024 13:55

Oh, I loved Catastrophe.
I really don't like PWB (or Andrew Scott) and that made me not watch more than a little of Fleabag. Loved Killing Eve though...or most of it anyway.

the80sweregreat · 29/08/2024 16:28

I liked Miranda as it was fluffy and funny and she said things I think sometimes !
It probably hasn't aged well , but the characters were well drawn and acted by all.
It was quirky

TonTonMacoute · 29/08/2024 17:58

I watched it a few years ago as DS wanted to watch it. I did warn him that it might not be suitable inter generational viewing but we both really enjoyed it.

However, I caught a bit of it while channel hopping the other evening and I'm not sure I would be able to watch it again

cardibach · 29/08/2024 22:35

jokish · 29/08/2024 13:28

I watched enough of it to form an opinion. I’m not obligated to watch hours of something in case it decides to be less cringeworthy.

AnotherEmma · 29/08/2024 22:52

If everyone is talking about something I'll usually watch the first episode - or the trailer at the very least - to make my mind up about whether or not to watch more. It can take me an episode or two to get into things, as well.

Please just watch an episode and see what you think! You can tell from this thread that some people love it (myself included) and others hate it. So avoid getting preconceived ideas from this thread and just give it a go!

AinmEile · 30/08/2024 00:04

queenofthewild · 28/08/2024 11:53

I didn't like the first episode at all. But glad I overcame that.

Yes this, struggled at first with the character, then started to like it then loved it

AinmEile · 30/08/2024 00:05

mansplainingsincethe90s · 28/08/2024 13:26

Yes. You'll know whether it's your sort of thing within the first few minutes.

Disagree. You have to get to know the character.
