We are about to move to a village near Booths supermarket. Never been anywhere near one and have how some mns hold them in high regard!
What are your favourites? What to avoid. Are they good at Christmas?
Please let me know!

My DH would walk ten miles a day to get a butter pie for his lunch, he says the booths one is amazing.

I suppose that would help with the calories. 🤣🤣

Haha, I've no idea of they are very calorific... I've never had one (must try), but they sound it. 😁😏

Fiddler’s crisps - the black pudding and mustard ones in particular.

So my understanding is that Garstang or Lytham are bigger shops, if I wanted to make a special trip? Anywhere else?

I travel all over northern England for work and leisure so could always engineer a trip out to a Booths that is near other places. I fancy a couple of the shopping bags and the Christmas book that must be out fairly soon.

We sometimes pop into one or another of them to pick up a sandwich or something else if we're on the way home but can't remember relative sizes. Iirc the Longton one is quite large for a small place, similarly Milnthorpe.

Re the early comment comparing to Waitrose...it's only relatively recently they've made any incursions into Booths territory and still are absent from many northern locations so yes, they're to some extent aimed at the same market segment.

The best almond croissants.

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 28/08/2024 17:09

I came on to moan about Booths as its my only nearby supermarket but I have to agree about the bags
Slogan, decent colours, sturdy, washable and with long and short straps! What's not to love

NellieJean · 28/08/2024 17:13

Really excellent meat and the butchers know their stuff. A lot of named farms for both meat and veg. The staff are always helpful and charming.
The Xmas catalogue is amazing and full of beautiful stuff. They make Waitrose look like Lidl. Unusually because of family we regularly shop in both Booths and Waitrose.

PieonaBarm · 28/08/2024 17:32

Their fabric shopping bags. Love them.

I've just nipped to Booths - 10 mins away. Raided the reduced section for dinner. Chicken fillets, salad, tabbouleh and coleslaw, all bargains.
I've grown up with Booths so I guess I take it for granted, but I still love the serenity, no tannoys, no music, no door alarms, and never see children running around! 😄
I'm quite selective with what I buy; cat food expensive, for example. but there's always good offers on in every section. Love their Builders teabags, olive bar, fish counter, and hot food counter, and the fruit and veg is always very fresh.
We have a lovely guy that oversees the wine and spirit section; he's so knowledgeable and often has his wine-tasting cart out!
Agree with the shopping bags being fun but not as practical as sturdy bags for life. Mine is 'This Charming Flan' 😄

The Keswick ones not serene 😣… I hate that one particularly in the summer.

Milnthorpe is my fave for quiet

MamofCats · 28/08/2024 20:26

I live near the Keswick one and because it's nearly always busy , they have kept the self service tills .

PramsEar · 28/08/2024 20:40

We live near a small Booths.

We joke that it’s posher than Waitrose. Definitely a middle class type of shop!

What I like about it, is that it’s not overloaded with a wide range of products (too much choice can be hard work), no tinny music or tannoys, no self service and lovely friendly helpful staff. Most of the ones in our branch have been there donkey years, so they must be doing something right to retain their loyalty for so long.

I can recommend Bowland Cheese - it is my guilty pleasure.

I like being able to sample the cheese on the counter.

The meat is good quality. Often get the meat deals of 3 for £12 which is perfect for us, in terms of making meals at a reasonable price.

i will admit that I tend to buy most of my groceries elsewhere like fruit/veg/cleaning stuff as cheaper. However will get from Booths if need to quickly get something and don’t want to trek to other side of town to get them.

You can find some good bargains in the reduction aisle.

Enjoy getting to know your local branch.

DrPeculiar · 28/08/2024 20:43

That’s interesting @MamofCats . I was told that all self service tills had been removed due to shoplifting. My local M&S food has loads of self service tills.

Booths opened here ten years after Waitrose opened in the next (northern) town so they’re not always filling in the Waitrose gaps.

GermanBite · 28/08/2024 20:56

What is the Booths in Ilkley like?

Leeds3 · 28/08/2024 21:03

As a PP mentioned the potato butter pies are delicious (although buttery mashed potato in a pastry crust is not going to win any healthy eating awards they are a nice treat from time to time.) Also like the dips, especially beetroot and mint. Great range of drinks in the alcohol section, it's the only place locally that stocks Ricard. Can't remember the brand but they do a lovely lime/mango cider which is great with curry. At Easter my kids go mad for the chocolate "Scotch eggs" which have either a creme or caramel egg inside a chocolate case.

oObyeOo · 31/08/2024 08:58

I’m pretty sure Windermere still has its self service tills. Another busy one depending on the time of year!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/09/2024 19:56

We went to the garstang booths on our way home from somewhere this afternoon, haven't been in years.

I can very happily vouch for the quality of their sirloin steak, portobello mushrooms and tenderstem brocolli which DH has just cooked for us. My contribution was growing the tomatoes. Oh, and he looked at the buttery meaty frying pan and apologised for leaving me to clear up... mmm, that's ok dear. Me and some freshly made bread. Yum.Grin

@GermanBite I like the Booths in Ilkley (probably as I live there!). I think it has a good selection of food and drink. Nice staff good cafe. Is there anything in particular you wanted?

MrTwatchester · 02/09/2024 12:27

Coffee Renoirs
Sausage swirl bap from the hot lunch counter
