We are about to move to a village near Booths supermarket. Never been anywhere near one and have how some mns hold them in high regard!
What are your favourites? What to avoid. Are they good at Christmas?
Please let me know!

Cheese and beer! They also do lovely fish and vegetarian patés. Patès? Can't check on my phone...

I have two of the Christmas books I keep on my recipe shelf. Lovely to flick through. I moved south last year. I miss Booths.

Everything is good in booths. Good quality products. We have one next to our house and keep an eye on the whoops isle- they stock it twice a day. We nip just before lunch and often the butchers sausages/ steaks/ pies/ cheese all gets reduced- makes it taste even better.

Their bakery sourdough and Devon split tin loaves.
The cheese counter.
I prefer their milk to any other supermarket’s.
They sell Longley Farm cottage cheese (as do Sainsburys but not Waitrose).
Fruit and veg stays fresher for longer and actually tastes of something.
Wallings ice cream.
Own brand chunky frozen chips.
Mince isn’t in that horrible vacuum packing.
Have done a few Christmas Click And Collect orders after going through the Christmas Book - fantastic! Not many substitutions but when there was they were of an excellent quality. One year I had forgotten to add stuffing and they put some in anyway for free!

No self serve tills, service always polite and friendly. My nearest one is quite small and it’s always the same staff.

They also sell lonely farm ‘philadelphia’

We do this too… salmon, tuna steaks. Then just freeze them.

The Windermere one has a curry specialist. They’re really nice!

Saucery · 28/08/2024 08:45

They also sell lonely farm ‘philadelphia’ Oooh, thanks, I’ll look out for that!

CleopatrasBeautifulNose · 28/08/2024 09:28

Lonely farm. Sounds bleak. 😁

Thanks everyone.
Please explain what is so special about the bags!

They're large, roomy tote bags with funny slogans on them like 'The Cake District', 'Morecambe and Pies', 'Much Ado About Stuffing', 'I Predict a Fry-Up'.

TheYoungestSibling · 28/08/2024 10:10

My Booths tote bag is a lovely teal green and says Beer Today, Scone Tomorrow. The short and long handles are really useful.

Butterflyfern · 28/08/2024 10:16

Their fresh bread is the best of the supermarkets imo. They do a lovely rye loaf in particular

And the deli counter and ready meal bundles is great. Good pies :)

My booths bag is an oldie, but a classic: "Preston not Heston" it's been in weekly use for many years and is still going strong

What is special about the bags?🤔
Do they sell anything besides food?

I can’t believe the Booths bag love. Yes the slogans are catchy annd they’re made of cotton. The two length handle thing is a recent development. I prefer the bog standard reusable bags from other supermarkets that are slightly stiff so easier to pack and twice the size. My six (as I just buy another if I haven’t got a bag with me) Booths bags live in the boot and are always the last bags I reach for.

BabaYetu · 28/08/2024 11:30

Great cheese counter, local veg.

RedToothBrush · 28/08/2024 12:13

Their own brand Port. They do a few but I think it's the mid range one which is the best. All of them are exceptional though.

And their Christmas Coffee.

Ifailed · 28/08/2024 12:22

What's a "whoops isle" ?

Just the going out of date that day section

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2024 12:24

I am definitely NOT disappointed DD got her first choice of Uni so she didn't have to take her Insurance offer of Lancaster where there is a large Booths.
Nope, definitely not, because that would make me a bad parent

ErrolTheDragon · 28/08/2024 13:03

DH does most of our shopping, and has observed that all branches of Booths are not the same - he reckoned the Lancaster one wasn't as good as eg Lytham, and there used to be one in a poorer part of Preston which carried a more basic range than the Fullwood one.

RandomMess · 28/08/2024 13:48

The Booths in Lancaster is tiny, worth popping into the Garstang one instead.

Sadly (for me) DD is going to Nottingham so no joy

McLeodIsPronouncedMcloud · 28/08/2024 14:18

I live near one. Most of the stuff is fairly standard, but it’s a nice experience, no glaring lights.
Staff in my local seem very relaxed, so queuing to pay can take a long long time.

They do hot roast beef sandwiches (always sold out by 1pm) which are incredible.
It’s the nearest place to buy really good cheese (kaltbach is a favourite).

Bjorkdidit · 28/08/2024 14:24

So my understanding is that Garstang or Lytham are bigger shops, if I wanted to make a special trip? Anywhere else?

I travel all over northern England for work and leisure so could always engineer a trip out to a Booths that is near other places. I fancy a couple of the shopping bags and the Christmas book that must be out fairly soon.

DrPeculiar · 28/08/2024 14:28

@McLeodIsPronouncedMcloud I agree re staff. Seems very relaxed, definite lack of customer service focus. The demise of the self checkouts in Booths was a sad day imo. The previous manager of my local store was a nice guy, it seems to have gone downhill since he left.

I was in my local store the other week and had gone to the kiosk to pay. No staff present but four of them huddled round the newly reduced trolley snagging the packs of reduced salmon fillets for themselves, leaving me standing there for at least five mins until they’d completed their own transactions.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 28/08/2024 14:29

I download the Christmas book each year even though I don’t live within 100 miles of a branch of Booths. I’m totally envious of anyone who lives within striking distance of a Booths. I just have to make do with salivating over the book.

WitchyBits · 28/08/2024 15:11

My DH would walk ten miles a day to get a butter pie for his lunch, he says the booths one is amazing.
