I have no idea what's going on but I'm really enjoying it! Can any Irish mumsnetters explain what is happening other than it seems like a mix of hockey, quidditch and lacrosse.

What an incredible game and for anyone who hasn't watched an All Ireland before - it was epic! The football final is next Sunday - it's not as fast paced but will still be a great game to watch

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/07/2024 18:28

and of course, players in each team have to reside in the county they represent, so it means a lot to them and their families and friends.

Canwegodancing · 21/07/2024 18:30

Really enjoyed it

There are lots of GAA clubs dotted about in England/Scotland - I think many just do football rather than hurling though. I had a relative play football in Manchester who won the all-Britain and it was brilliant to go along and watch it being played over here. Really hope the match being broadcast nationwide rather than just in NI today will kindle an interest in the game here.

What a phenomenal game today, gutted for Cork but Clare deserved their win in the end.

FrothyCothy · 21/07/2024 18:34

The highlight for me was seeing all the comments on twitter, much like here, from people seeing the game for the first time ever 😁

FrothyCothy · 21/07/2024 18:37

Here’s the list of clubs

Saw it for the first time today. Absolutely amazing game, so fast and the skills are incredible.

Loved the speeches at the end. Ive never heard match officials being thanked at a big match in any sport before.

Where can we see more?

FrothyCothy · 21/07/2024 18:38

A link would probably be better! www.gaa.ie/api/images/image/private/t_q-best/prd/kil5vjejid2zjjivuprv.pdf

I played county hockey for years.

Once watched Cork v Kerry in the hurling championships in Ireland back in the 1990s and it was utterly mental. I loved it.

I’ve just turned it on, on the basis of this thread!
Coming from a footy mad household, it’s much faster and also terrifying!

Do kids play it in school?

Of course they do, why wouldn’t they?

And the stadium is rammed! How much would a ticket cost?

€100

Fast and furious. You are running with the hurl , balancing a ball , trying to hit it towards goal whilst dodging the opposition. Very young guys playing it , often at college . Local heroes and hopefully indulgent employers .
Yay , Clare has won for the first time ever. ! UP THE BANNER MEN

This is the fifth all Ireland won by Clare.

well not quite, I work with Roscommon players, they work here in Dublin with me albeit they're football players but same same

3luckystars · 21/07/2024 18:50

Where were ye all watching it? Was it in BBC?

foothandmouth · 21/07/2024 18:51

Fastest field game in the world! No skin in the game (Baile Átha Cliath) but it's savage, have a scar on my eyebrow from a rogue sliotar when I was supervising during my teacher training years ago 😆

Snap. Don't meet many from there

My little boy has just started, he was able to join the local club when he turned four!

minsmum · 21/07/2024 19:04

Back in the day they didn't have the protective head gear. When I used to take my kids home in the school holidays all of the children would be playing out in the street or on the beach, all day every day. We had to get hurls for them and they would spend loads of time practicing in the parks in London ready for their next holiday

minsmum · 21/07/2024 19:05

Luckily their cousins were as mad for hurling as they were

yeah we fail massively at hurling BUT we are Dublin so the football makes up for it 💙

dubmimi · 21/07/2024 19:10

Up the BANNER!!

What a game! Nothing as fast paced as a hurling match!

Love gaelic football too & looking forward to next weekends final!

Atethehalloweenchocs · 21/07/2024 19:12

I freaking love the hurling, watch every year with my Irish step dad, and todays game was a cracker - what a great intro if you havent watched it before!

TooManyNiblings · 21/07/2024 20:55

I've just been watching it with DD based on this thread!
Can anyone tell me what the block is on their back please? It ruins the sponsor's line so I'm guessing it's game critical?

GPS trackers worn under kit - the back is the safest place for the tech to be stored. They are used extensively in pro sports
