I have no idea what's going on but I'm really enjoying it! Can any Irish mumsnetters explain what is happening other than it seems like a mix of hockey, quidditch and lacrosse.

When I was growing up in Dublin most people around me didn't play GAA or hurling, but now loads of kids do because the clubs have excellent youth programmes which cost very little, are inclusive and social.

KelliandJudi · 21/07/2024 17:51

It's great to be able to watch it, I don't know the sport but I'm excited!

Hurlingnovice · 21/07/2024 17:54

I'm completely converted, what a brilliant match and what an incredible sport.

And the stadium is rammed! How much would a ticket cost?

It must be carnage! There are a lot of uncoordinated kids out there, and they are waving their sticks about - worse than hockey!

And you can't even tell them to keep their sticks down 😆

Wow! What a game! I’m almost in tears here and I don’t support either team here, my rels are from Dublin and the Midlands. Hope the BBC broadcast more matches in the future.
Well done, all players and teams support!

Gooseysgirl · 21/07/2024 17:57

I'm in tears.... I'm from Cork ❤️🤍❤️🤍

It's more that you wouldn't be able to get one.

user1471526265 · 21/07/2024 17:58

Tickets are around €100 at this level but harder than getting Taylor Swift tickets 😂

Soonenough · 21/07/2024 17:58

Fast and furious. You are running with the hurl , balancing a ball , trying to hit it towards goal whilst dodging the opposition. Very young guys playing it , often at college . Local heroes and hopefully indulgent employers .
Yay , Clare has won for the first time ever. ! UP THE BANNER MEN

user1478299641 · 21/07/2024 18:00

5th time Clare has won the all-ireland😁
Fantastic game💛💙

user1471526265 · 21/07/2024 18:01

I'm a Cork woman and gutted, but mostly for my son and nieces and nephews who all have their jerseys on and been glued to the match and are now close to tears in some cases. Cork haven't done too well in hurling for many years and after beating last years champions thought we might just manage it this time .

Wow! That’s so interesting. How fabulous to have such a well supported national sport - I’m guessing it’s not played anywhere else?

GreenGherkin · 21/07/2024 18:02

you might enjoy the Gaelic Football final too which is next Sunday. Not long to wait!

Who is this man with the microphone? He reminds me of my kids headteacher

There are grassroots matches up and down the country with hardly a soul at them most of the time, but at championship level it gets a lot of support. Your county taking on another is pretty much the same as your country's soccer team playing in the world cup finals!

Gooseysgirl · 21/07/2024 18:06

It's played all the world! Just not on a huge scale. Several clubs in London.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/07/2024 18:08

Actually London is a "county" in the All Ireland.

user1471526265 · 21/07/2024 18:09

Do London only play football not hurting?

DramaAlpaca · 21/07/2024 18:10

Very happy Clare resident here. My family are finally able to breathe and are going nuts! What a brilliant, brilliant game.

UP THE BANNER!!

AlecTrevelyan006 · 21/07/2024 18:10

btw - Croke Park is the fourth largest sport stadium in Europe with a capacity of 82,300

Only Bernabeu (83,186), Wembley (90,000), and Nou Camp (98,000 - currently being expanded to 105,000) are bigger.

Its tickled me that in every corner of these islands men picked up sticks and whacked a stone and created a new game out of it.

That depends, like if you're a particular club/county member, like with a season holder for the Premier League, but big matches yeah gold dust

Puppiesmakemehappy · 21/07/2024 18:13

The fitness of those guys is insane. Any high level GAA player, any gender, any of the sports are massively committed to their teams. It’s unreal the training and time they put in after work, after class, every weekend. Very proud to be Irish on days like All Ireland Day(s).
