Random beeping noise in house

Okay, so this is driving me ever so slightly round the bend.

There’s a random beeping noise coming from somewhere in my house although I have no idea where it’s not at regular intervals, maybe once every day or every other day and at different times- it beeps 6 or 7 times in a row then stops for a while.

I wouldn’t say it’s a loud enough beep to be a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm plus it’s a new build a year old so shouldn’t be low battery yet. I’ve checked all appliances but all look okay, boiler looks fine, burglar alarm has no faults on it.

Any ideas before I put my house up for sale only half kidding 😅

You can buy devices that do this as a prank, have you annoyed anyone or got any jokers in the family?

My mum heard beeping/loud screeching noise when watching interceptors and wondered why the police siren hadn't stopped. It was our spare cm alarm in the pantry with a low battery. She bought it to me I couldn't stop it as it had a warped screw. I ran next door holding it at arms length. Mr NDN heard me coming down the drive and flung the back door open. I threw it at him and told him to make it stop. I sensibly hid with MrsNDN in the sitting room. Mr NDN had to muffle it with a tea towel so he could get the back off.
Thank heaven for lovely neighbours. ♥

Ours was a smoke alarm in the floorboards under the bath. Have no bloody idea why it was put there.

Are you my mum? She bought a house and had builders in to redo the bathroom, they did the exact same thing. Threw the old smoke alarm under the floorboards in the bathroom under the bath!

My random beep, which took several weeks to pin down, turned out to be a spare carbon monoxide detector I'd put into a drawer years before and had forgotten about.

Willowkins · 10/07/2024 23:52

I had this. It was loudest in the kitchen but you could hear it all through the house. Checked everything. Couldn't understand why it was so random. Finally worked out it was one of the garden fence panels squeaking in the wind.

Checked the loft- definitely no smoke alarm in there (really hope there’s not one under the floorboards somewhere but it’s a persimmon new build so I wouldn’t put it past them!)

We’re mid terrace but it does sound like it’s coming from our house- although might be an idea to ask the neighbours in case I’m wrong, I’ll catch them when I next see them. The problem is it’s so sporadic and doesn’t last very long so by the time I hear it and get up to investigate it’s stopped and I can’t pin it down although if I had to hazard a guess I’d say potentially first floor which is just 2 spare bedrooms and a bathroom.

Will change the batteries in the carbon monoxide and smoke defectors to see if that’s the problem

No kids toys or watches or anything like that- had a massive clear out of old junk before moving in.

No card thing on the boiler either and pressure is fine. I’ve made sure the timers are off on cooker/microwave. Doors are definitely shut on the appliances and it’s a different beep to the dishwasher.

Potentially have pissed off some tradesmen as we’ve had persimmon round loads to fix stuff off the snagging list- maybe they’re just messing with me 😂

My other half has kindly declared tonight that I’ve lost the plot. Probably because I was running round like a mad woman examining appliances and smoke detectors when he was trying to watch the England match

Smoke alarms wouldnt be 6 consecutive beeps once a day at random times.

Yes, they are.

All hardwired alarms have a 9v battery backup and if that battery has discharged or the circuit isn't connected in the first place, so the backup can't function in a powercut/fire causing a cut to the alarm's hardwired supply, the emergency alert is 6-7 random beeps and a noticeable pause in between them. It's designed to piss you off so much that you get it fixed immediately.

TwinCheeks · 11/07/2024 16:20

Some maybe but I lived in a 3 storey persimmon terrace not dissimalar to the OP with hardwired alarms on each floor and when one battery was going weak it flashed a different colour I think, dont remember any 6 beeps.

I also previously had a carbon monoxide detector that went off at 3am and scared the bejesus out of us. No appliances were on at the time and it simply turned out the battery was leaking.

Oldieandgoldie · 11/07/2024 16:49

My electric clothes drier beeps when it’s on timer.

OperaDSM · 11/07/2024 16:58

Have you made a note of what time of day it is, and who else is in the house at the time? Is there a pattern?

Nottodaty · 11/07/2024 17:02

We had an odd alarm sounding that drove us mad - we thought the kids had set an alarm on an old phone or something, a toy going crazy…as it sounded like it was in the house. Eventually we found out it was our neighbours- it had fallen behind the bed against the wall and sounded through the wall - sadly they were in holiday so it was there for a week!

DatingDinosaur · 11/07/2024 18:54

Mine was a freezer fault. Faint random beeps. Sounded like it was outside. I only realised it was inside when it happened as I was stood next to it.

Don't rule out new appliances!

shellyleppard · 11/07/2024 18:58

@TwoLeftSocksWithHoles 🤣🤣🤣🤣op i would suggest carbon monoxide alarm battery needs changing?? Or is it your smart meter??

gracewitt · 11/07/2024 19:00

I had a mysterious beep when living in a previous house. Drove me mad trying to track it down. Turned out to be the central locking on next door neighbour's car. Four months and then I just happened to be outside when they were going out.

Justanother123 · 11/07/2024 19:01

My smart meter beeps randomly I think when it loses connection. Have you got one of those?

Ghost2 · 11/07/2024 19:03

I had a similar situation years ago, turns out it was coming from next door, can't remember what it was now but I was so convinced it was coming from inside our house, drove me absolutely mad
