Random beeping noise in house

Okay, so this is driving me ever so slightly round the bend.

There’s a random beeping noise coming from somewhere in my house although I have no idea where it’s not at regular intervals, maybe once every day or every other day and at different times- it beeps 6 or 7 times in a row then stops for a while.

I wouldn’t say it’s a loud enough beep to be a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm plus it’s a new build a year old so shouldn’t be low battery yet. I’ve checked all appliances but all look okay, boiler looks fine, burglar alarm has no faults on it.

Any ideas before I put my house up for sale only half kidding 😅

Smoke alarm in loft?

FactoryResetNeeded · 10/07/2024 20:18

Are you detached, or could it be through an adjoining wall?
Any kids toys with batteries that might be running low?

gamerchick · 10/07/2024 20:19

I'd still check the carbon monoxide detector. That's what drove me batshit for a chunk of time.

NoToMinglingHappilySingleIThink · 10/07/2024 20:20

My smoke detectors drive me nuts wheb the back up battery needs changing. Might be that

Needanewnamebeingwatched · 10/07/2024 20:23

I could hear a beep when I was working and it dro e me mad, I search the house.

Everytime I left my computer I could t hear it anymore.

Turns out it was the mouse communicating with the dongle.

I have very sensitive hearing

Reminds me of the friends episode 🤣.

Have you got a battery in the airing cupboard for your burglar alarm? Ours was beeping.
Dishwasher finishing?fridge door not closed properly?

Oldieandgoldie · 10/07/2024 20:25

Digital watch stuffed in the back of a drawer?
Childs toy?
Fridge/freezer alarm?

sentfrmmyiphone · 10/07/2024 20:29

oven timer? microwave timer?

i'm sure its not, but its not a pair of hair straightners that have been left on, my ghd's do this, they turn off but they beep...

EnglishBluebell · 10/07/2024 20:30

Potential causes/things I've had beep when they're unhappy (also in new build):

Boiler's water pressure needs adjusting
Fridge
Dishwasher & washing machine
clock or timer on oven/cooker
Lock on induction hob
Digital camera
Wired in doorbell's back up battery
Microwave clock
The built-in internet control box (they refer to it as a router but you still need a network-specific router) that is now put in, in new builds - ours is mystifyingly in the airing cupboard (causing our broadband provider's router to melt enough to bend slightly!) Well ours beeped when the internet went down
Alarm clock battery running low

masomenos · 10/07/2024 20:30

Kid’s long forgotten watch?

TwinCheeks · 10/07/2024 20:33

You must be able to isolate it to a floor. Go from there to isolate the room. The random nature of it is confusing.

RappersNeedChapstick · 10/07/2024 20:35

Ours was a smoke alarm in the floorboards under the bath. Have no bloody idea why it was put there.

NippyCrab · 10/07/2024 20:38

Have you a tag on keys? We have a Samsung tag and it would randomly beep of it lost connection with my phone ffs, jumped out my skin one night!

MumOfStarWars · 10/07/2024 20:38

We had this. We did an extension and there was an old burglar alarm that the electrician didn’t disconnect properly and as we weren’t going to use it, the builders just stuck it under the floorboards. We thought nothing of it until the odd beeping sound started at random times as the battery eventually died. Took us ages to work out what it was, went through all possibilities like kids toys/electrical items/cd monitors etc etc. Then my husband had a brainwave. Had to extract it at cost unfortunately!

IcouldbutIdontwantto · 10/07/2024 20:39

Have you kept a note of when it's happening to see if there's a less obvious pattern?

I think it's either a forgotten alarm, a dying battery, coming from next door, or a ghost trying to communicate with you via morse code.

Nevernotfun · 10/07/2024 20:49

Is there a magnetic card like-device stuck to your boiler? If so, might be beeping to remind that a boiler service is due, especially if you say your new build is a year old?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/07/2024 20:58

Have you seen one of these running about the house?

Have you had any tradesmen round lately and pissed them off?!

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 10/07/2024 21:34

It's probably the end of the world switch

longdistanceclaraclara · 10/07/2024 21:37

I had this and took me ages to figure out. Electric cars parking...

NeverDropYourMooncup · 10/07/2024 21:38

It's the backup battery in your hardwired CO2/smoke alarms.

Trust me, I know this one from experience.

Ineedanewsofa · 10/07/2024 21:40

We had this, it was a bloody toy walkie talkie in it’s death throws that had fallen down the back of a chest of drawers! Took me weeks to find the damn thing

sarahc336 · 10/07/2024 21:41

Smoke alarm battery

TwinCheeks · 10/07/2024 21:42

Smoke alarms wouldnt be 6 consecutive beeps once a day at random times.
