Anyone delayed their period using norethisterone?

Was it worth doing or not?

I'm due on the day before going on a beach holiday next month 🙄 my periods normally last about 3/4 days and aren't too heavy, but I always feel uncomfortable wearing tampons whilst wearing swimwear.

Ended up being on my period on my last holiday which was frustrating, but have seen doing a google that the side effects people have had aren't great, so if you've done this what was your experience?

TIA 😊

I took a 2 week course once to stop months of non-stop bleeding (I don't know if that would have been the same dose). It worked perfectly well in terms of stopping the bleeding, but I bloated out to roughly the same size I was when I was 6 months pregnant....

I always do it before a holiday (as I’m older and have heavy periods).
I feel a bit bloated the first 2 days, but then fine.
you shouldn’t use it if you have a heart or liver condition, a clotting disorder or a family history of thrombosis.

My DD 13 used it for a school trip recently and was fine. You need to be pretty regular for it to work.

Yes, but I had the worst period I've ever had in my life when I stopped - it was so horrific I said I'd never do it again

grungey · 10/07/2024 23:59

My DDs take it every time we go on holiday - without fail It seems to coincide! No issues whatsoever. Swim, beach, relax without having to factor in periods and all the crap that goes along with it. Bit like being a man!

Yes - I was due on, day 2 of a ten day holiday and my periods last at least 7 days.

Took it with no side effects for a few days before and then the time I was there, came on a few days after I stopped. It was normal. I normally bleed very heavily and painfully every other time or so - this was a 'normal' one.

I’ve used it several times for holidays. I only take it for the minimum amount of time possible, and I also don’t take as many tablets as they say (1 pr 2 rather than 3), but it still delays my periods until 48 hours after i stop taking it. No side effects at all and my cycle usually adjusts back the next month.

Yep used several times for holidays or big events. Never had any bad side effects.

WiseBiscuit · 11/07/2024 11:25

I have used it many times and no side effects.

I generally use it though to delay the period before the one due on holiday so I’m not actually taking the tablets on holiday if that makes sense.

ImAMinion · 11/07/2024 11:29

I’ve used it multiple times and never had issues apart from a couple of times where I still felt very minor cramping - did the job it needed to do.

The period you have once you come off it though isn’t the nicest - but not unbearable, I guess this is just because it is literally being held inside that bit longer. Last time I used it I found it came out heavier and faster and a bit more clumpy than usual but not unmanageable - it didn’t effect my cycle and my next one came as usual about ten days later (and a bit lighter!) and then fully back to normal.
