Anyone delayed their period using norethisterone?

Was it worth doing or not?

I'm due on the day before going on a beach holiday next month 🙄 my periods normally last about 3/4 days and aren't too heavy, but I always feel uncomfortable wearing tampons whilst wearing swimwear.

Ended up being on my period on my last holiday which was frustrating, but have seen doing a google that the side effects people have had aren't great, so if you've done this what was your experience?

TIA 😊

I used it quite recently for a weekend away, I didn’t notice any side effects at all but I didn’t use the full course because I only wanted 3 days delay.

HiDaisy · 10/07/2024 18:32

I did once and it sent me loopy!

CelesteCunningham · 10/07/2024 18:35

I used it this year and last. Worked as intended and no side effects on holiday but I did have bad PMS when I stopped taking it. Well worth it for me.

Following as considering this next month for my holiday but read lots of horror stories..

cloudy477654 · 10/07/2024 18:58

I'm on it right now! It's the fourth time I'm using it because I seem to have very bad luck with my period being due when I've got holidays booked! No side effects here - maybe occasional bloating/nausea but hard to tell if it's a coincidence or the norethisterone, definitely nothing that would put me off taking it.
I usually take it the month before my holiday so that my next period is also delayed. Just so that I don't have to bother with taking tablets on holiday

MamaGarl85 · 10/07/2024 18:59

I have used it a few times and never had any side effects.

MissCalamity · 10/07/2024 20:15

I think if I was due on towards the end of my holiday, I'd just crack on with it but right at the start 😒
Thanks for your experiences!

I used it for my destination wedding / honeymoon a few years ago.

Took it for 3 weeks

Was fine while on it, but couldn't help but think Mother Nature is a bitch, she will have her way in the end.

Had the most agonizing heavy period and pms within 48 hours of stopping

Next period was completely back to normal though so no lasting effects

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 10/07/2024 20:39

Yes, numerous times. No side effects, just delayed that time of the month. Much better than being hot, sweaty and managing the flow.

SallySilly · 10/07/2024 21:27

Until last year I had taken on numerous holidays with no side effects, but last year I developed an awful case of adult acne after taking it for two weeks. It has taken months to get my skin back to the condition it was in pre holiday last year, and it really knocked my confidence.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 10/07/2024 21:33

I did once and it made me absolutely crazy. Never again.

Hollythedogwalker · 10/07/2024 21:44

I’ve taken it twice, the second time hoping the hideous period pain I had after taking it the first time was a coincidence. It wasn’t, I was in agony again. I’m thoroughly accustomed to bad periods anyway but those were something else

Proudbitch · 10/07/2024 21:45

Done it twice and no issues at all (I’m early 40s)

Emotionalsupporthamster · 10/07/2024 21:46

Yeah I’ve done it before and had no bother at all, was definitely worth it

BillCar · 10/07/2024 21:47

Yes, have used it with no issues at all

MimitteAndElsaGoToSwitzerland · 10/07/2024 21:47

Yes and I would never do it again. Like others, it sent me loopy. Plus I was exhausted beyond belief.

13Bastards · 10/07/2024 21:48

Totally fine for me. And I am someone who found the pill made them bonkers

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/07/2024 21:48

I used to do this all the time. My periods were so heavy, I used to use Norethisterone to avoid having a period on any important occasion or holiday. No side effects and it was brilliant.

I've now gone through the Menopause so luckily don't have that issue any more!

subtletyisntlostonme · 10/07/2024 21:50

Yes, it definitely wasn't the thing for me. Made me really down and miserable. HRT had the same effect unfortunately.

Ineedanewsofa · 10/07/2024 21:51

First time I took it for a week and it made me a crazy person 😬
10 years later(!) I took it again but only for 3 days as period was due on day before going home - no mental effects that time and the period was fine but the one after was BRUTAL.

RubySloth · 10/07/2024 21:52

As long as you take it 3 days before your period, you will be fine. I've not had any bad experiences and worked great for me.

shootingstar1 · 10/07/2024 21:54

I used it for a beach holiday too and it really didn't agree with me. You still get PMS symptoms but they kinda hung around the whole time I was taking the tablets (14 days). Then I didn't have my next period for about 6 weeks and it was extremely heavy and painful . It's messed my next few cycles too. I had wished I had just had my period and missed out on the pool etc for a few days.

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 10/07/2024 22:27

I have taken it several times for holidays. It is mostly fine but it makes me feel quite bloated. I have very heavy and painful periods though so it would be a nightmare on holiday.

Previously when I have taken it my menstrual cycle has been fairly normal after finishing it (eg I take it, I stop taking it, my period comes about three days later and then my menstrual cycle just carries on from there) HOWEVER I took for two weeks while on holiday in May/beginning of June this year and I’ve had two periods since then which is unusual. Still worth it for me though!

Wonkybrolly · 10/07/2024 22:32

I used it last month as I’m worried I’ll “flood” on a flight back from the US next month. And I used it last month to try it out

I have terrible anxiety which wasn’t exacerbated so that’s good. But I only used it for 3 days as a trial. I’ll only need it for 3 days next time to avoid period on a plane

Although maybe my dates would be pushed back anyway due to shifting my cycle last month - I’m not sure 🤔

littlekipling · 10/07/2024 22:44

It made me insanely hungry and bloated whilst on it. Not ideal in 37 degrees and high humidity. I gained weight and I rarely gain weight on holiday as I eat healthier and get very active on holiday. My periods are only just returning to normal now 4 months later also. I am usually like clockwork with a 28 day cycle that starts at around 8am oh a Sunday morning. Very precise haha. But, after the initial bleed when I stopped it, it then gave me a super short cycle then a 42 day cycle (ugh) and lots and lots of mid cycle clots / breakthrough bleeding before finally back on track this month. I don't think I'd take it again personally.
