The new word I figured was something beginning with a different letter that I normally pronounce - if it's that - am I saying it wrong ?

Yes, the other word has a letter at the beginning that I'm pretty sure should be silent. But I've heard a lot of people pronounce it the way you do, so even if it's wrong it's definitely common!

There was a very popular comic song in the late 1950s or early 1960s about the answer. George Martin of Beatles fame produced it, and it was recorded in a comedy album in the US shortly after.
This resulted in a widespread mispronunciation, despite mispronunciation being the point of the song.

I'm at loss with blue, only got purple by lucky elimination

@CountingCrones ahhh is that where that comes from? I had this feeling it was from somewhere specific, something comic. I am pretty sure I was taught at school as part of English pronunciations how it's said. Though I also say 'noo' cos I'm common as muck ;)

@Caerulea - DH tells me Radio 2 used to play it quite a bit in the 70s and early 80s. I know it became my dad used to sing it while he did DIY.

@CountingCrones I'm wondering if my grandad sang it me :)
