School roast meals on Wednesdays

Was wondering if (most) schools traditionally serve a roast meal for lunch on Wednesdays, and if so, why on that day?

DD's primary school always has roast on Wednesdays, my school also did, and so did DP's. I was wondering whether it's just coincidence, or comes from some deep-seated tradition like having fish on Fridays.

Roast on Wednesday here. Do many kids actually like it? It's the one school dinner that mine won't touch.

Mine love a roast, but I doubt they’d eat a school one. When they’ve had the Christmas dinners they’ve said the meat was hard, vegetables mushy etc. The quality of the food (and the cooking) means they have a packed lunch.

The last school I worked at the food was great. I paid my £2.60 everyday for a lovely home cooked meal and never cooked at home. The roast was really popular, especially among the teens who didn't get one at home. This wasn't a mainstream school though, we ate lunch as a "family" and no canteen/take away type food was on offer. Lunch around the table was considered an important part of the curriculum. Actually the memory brings a tear, it was lovely.

Wednesday here too!

NerrSnerr · 19/06/2024 20:34

Roast on a Wednesday for my kids. It's their favourite meal.

It's "roast sausage" here on Thursday, Weds is curry, fish on Friday. We're in Wales where FSM are available for all primary ages. Due to the decline in quality since this has happened my youngest still takes packed lunch.

Justploddingonandon · 19/06/2024 20:50

Wednesday here, though my DD won't touch it and always has the jacket potato option instead.
Also Wednesday at DS's school, which he reports does much better food than his primary, but usually takes a packed lunch as he has a club on Wednesdays and can't fit queuing, eating and the club in.

Roast on a Wednesday and Fishy Friday. It's the two days my DD had school dinners.

We’re in wales too and there has been a huge decline in school meals quality since FSM for all was rolled out.

mine has roast dinner on weds. But it’s all made off site at a central place and brought to schools to be heated up on the day.

fridays aren’t fish here neither- beef burger or nuggets with chips. Jamie Oliver would be horrified

DanceMumTaxi · 19/06/2024 21:50

Yep Wednesday here too.

SomewhereOverTheHill · 19/06/2024 21:57

Yeo Wednesday here too

Beezknees · 19/06/2024 22:12

DS's primary always did, and fish Friday. Think it's pretty common across schools.

Thursday is roast day here (south coast)

I always remember it on Thursdays as well. I went to school in London...

I am sure fish Friday is universal in UK schools and even work canteens and uni canteens

If it’s being cooked fresh with big joints, the meat is delivered on Monday. Cooked and chilled on Tuesday, sliced and reheated on Wednesday. It’s just practical. Can be moved one day for roast on Thursday, but as it’s fish on Friday those are the two best options.

Exactly this! And also because a Sunday roast is a thing and you don't want two roasts too close together 😁 (appreciate not everyone or even most people have a Sunday roast nowadays)
