School roast meals on Wednesdays

Was wondering if (most) schools traditionally serve a roast meal for lunch on Wednesdays, and if so, why on that day?

DD's primary school always has roast on Wednesdays, my school also did, and so did DP's. I was wondering whether it's just coincidence, or comes from some deep-seated tradition like having fish on Fridays.

Thursday is roast day here (south coast)

Lokshen · 19/06/2024 19:18

Wednesday here, but not something I was familiar with before this

MeinKraft · 19/06/2024 19:18

Roasts on Thursdays at my kids school too, Wednesday is curry day.

Our school doesn’t have a roast dinner on the menu.

ladymalfoy45 · 19/06/2024 19:22

Pizza on Monday, wraps on Tuesday, Roast on Wednesday, pasta Thursday and fish on Friday.
Baked potatoes with the usual fillings available everyday.
We have to choose the day before.
Our DD takes a packed lunch.

mogtheexcellent · 19/06/2024 19:23

Yep roast chicken on a weds, DD has the sandwich alternative. Pizza on mondays, pasta is thursdays and fish fingers on friday.

Is this Dolce Live Kitchen?

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 19/06/2024 19:34

No roast on our menu - except for Christmas lunch which is either roast Turkey or steak pie.

Today was chicken or vegetable korma

modgepodge · 19/06/2024 19:35

Yep. In both the school I work in and the school my daughter goes to!

Kitchenwitchwithuglynails · 19/06/2024 19:38

If it’s being cooked fresh with big joints, the meat is delivered on Monday. Cooked and chilled on Tuesday, sliced and reheated on Wednesday. It’s just practical. Can be moved one day for roast on Thursday, but as it’s fish on Friday those are the two best options.

Synergies · 19/06/2024 19:40

Yes ours get a roast on Wednesdays.

mentalblank · 19/06/2024 19:40

Ah - thanks @Kitchenwitchwithuglynails , that sounds very plausible as a reason! Interesting that it seems common but not universal.

It takes more prep than the other meals so it will follow an "easy" day. It will also depend when the butcher delivers.

Notjustabrunette · 19/06/2024 19:44

Tuesday is roast day at my children’s school.

dunroamingfornow · 19/06/2024 19:47

Tuesday here. Sometimes it moves to another day. All day breakfast today !

KezzaMucklowe · 19/06/2024 19:48

In my area its mince Monday, roast Wednesday and fish and chips / pizza and chips on a Friday. Lots of different things in between.

vacay · 19/06/2024 19:49

Wednesday here

vacay · 19/06/2024 19:49

Fish Friday, obviously

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/06/2024 19:52

Roast every other Wednesday and fish every Friday here. We're in Scotland.

LemonRedwood · 19/06/2024 19:53

It wasn't a thing when I was at school (I'm in my 40s), but I remember Wednesday roasts and Friday Fun lunches being introduced in the primary school I taught in round about 2009, maybe 2010.

Swanchaser · 19/06/2024 19:54

In both counties I've worked in it's always roast on a Wednesday, and of course Fishy Friday always happens

BobandRobertaSmith · 19/06/2024 19:55

Yes! It’s the same at my DC’s schools.

I went to boarding school so we had roasts on Sunday.

Apart from the suggestion above about the kitchen’s convenience, I suppose Wednesday makes sense as schools seem to have food themes on a recurring day eg pasta day, curry day, fish day etc presumably to make life easy for parents so they know without checking the menu daily what is being served when deciding on what to make for dinner or if they need to send a packed lunch if their DC won’t eat the school lunch. Midweek for a roast seems sensible as some people have a Sunday roast weekly, so halfway through the week seems like the best day to pick for roasts for the sake of variety.

Groovee · 19/06/2024 19:56

Tuesdays here

Barrenfieldoffucks · 19/06/2024 19:56

Yup, Wednesday here too

CeeJay81 · 19/06/2024 19:58

Thursday roast dinner day here. Usually something similar to roast on a Tuesday, like sausage & mash. Its also always fish on a Friday. The other 2 days vary a bit.

Iliketulips · 19/06/2024 19:59

Ours used to be roast on Thursday and fish&chips on Friday, but both days were popular and put too much pressure on kitchen staff, so roast was changed to Wednesday.

I work in the hall with our lovely children, but would say it's such a shame parents put their children down for hot dinners (appreciate some are free) and DC don't like them.
