Will this cough ever go away?

I'm shattered! Coughing, especially at night, for about a month now. Send me your magic remedies! I've SO had enough! I need sleep!

Hmmm - spoke too soon. Another night of tickle, choking and gagging, despite the benilyn. Back to the doc I fear.

@Onedayatatime22 :( Hope GP is sympathetic and that you get some rest this weekend.

I did a second night of Benilyn and slept 11.30pm to 5.30am. I am spending my day sitting as still as I can, and resting.

@Newestname002 I am thinking about no coffee today and going back to honey and lemon just to keep warm fluids going.

The only thing that worked for me is steroid inhalers with lemsip-cough-syrup at night.

A couple of friends have had this cough for ages, and one did look to see whether it was whooping cough.

Mine has got worse since I finished the antibiotics. After a week asking I got a prescription for some different antibiotics and a sputum test. I suppose I will hear the results of that next week.

I'm on day 7 of this and am so, so tired of the dry tickly cough keeping me up all night.

Have just been to pharmacy and they suggested the following:

1.,Beconase nasal spray (post nasal drip could be causing the urge to cough)

1. Soluble codeine and paracetamol (codeine can suppress the urge to cough)
2. Night nurse (has a cough suppressant in it but not to be mixed with the above)
3. Good old fashioned steaming to try and get the gunk up!

I've gone for Beconase spray and some soluble codeine/paracetamol. And oh some maxi panty liners for when I have a coughing fit and wee myself. 😱

It is 1am. I am not coughing. But can't sleep. My patterns are so messed up. I know I shouldn't be on my phone. But hate not sleeping and listening to my DH sleeping soundly next to me...

I sympathise with the cough and the "husband sleeping" it is such a wind up isn't it. I've often thought the only time I've felt like killing someone is when I'm exhausted/unwell/unable to sleep and husband is snoring away happily in the land of nod. Now the kids are grown up and gone if I can't sleep I go in one of the other bedrooms, safer than risking me being in the same bed as him.

The cough started for me Tuesday and I'm already sick to death of it. I've been given AB's for a chest infection but the cough is just relentless and my stomach is so sore from coughing. I feel for everyone with the same

@Iwasafool That made me smile! I didn't sleep at all last night. I don't want to nap in the day. I wonder if I've taken codeine and then the Benilyn and need to essentially wean off it. Sounds a bit dramatic like that, but it will have accumulated...,

@Beanosaurus I know we're not supposed to try and suppress the coughing. But at night, Benilyn night has been great. I've had 4/5 hours of sleep. And it's changed my outlook and ability to cope with the daytime. Being without sleep is torture. Hope you can get some rest in the meantime.

@littlesilverhandles How did you sleep? How was the codeine/paracetamol and spray combo?

It is tempting in the dead of night isn't it, lying there taunting me with his sleeping, I think it is rude.

How are we doing? A second night of struggling to get to sleep for me. And broken sleep. I am going to preserve without codeine but may try Benilyn. Five hours of sleep was lovely...

Try 3,000mg of vitamin C daily. If you get diarrhoea, which can happen, lower the dose.

I had the whooppping cough they think and then I got a viral thing. Its awful

I've had a couple of nights with benilyn bolt upright on the sofa. Think I've turned a corner. I went back to bed at 2am last night and was ok... Still get caught out with a tickle every now and again, and have to clear my throat a lot... the question now is when do I try without benilyn!!! I can't take codeine so 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼

@Onedayatatime22 I hear you. I figure Benilyn bringing sleep would be better than codeine or no sleep.

I need to read up on post infection coughing and whooping cough. I don't know much about the 100 day cough either. Maybe honey and lemon, and reducing dairy for me as a next step.

I have just sat in a hot steamy bath and refilled it tonight. I'm quite wheezy.

I’m suffering with this horrific cough too - I’ve had It almost two weeks and it’s just not getting any better or going anywhere, on Thursday I went out for the first time to walk the dog and thought I was on the mend but Friday I woke up feeling worse than ever.

Im not sleeping well, so will send Dh out to try and find the Benilyn tomorrow, also really struggling to get out of bed in the mornings due to such a terrible night, I actually cried a few hours ago because I don’t know what to do.

I'm very wheezy and coughing Isn’t very productive, so I’m coughing over and over and although I can feel the mucus (sorry!) on my chest it’s not moving so I’m finding it hard to breath.

I hope everyone else suffering gets a half decent sleep tonight.

I'm nearly at the end of my second batch of antibiotics, they finish tomorrow. I had amoxicillin and now doxycycline. I'm still coughing and now have a lot of pain in my left side at the back, side and to a lesser extent at the front. I think I will need another appointment but I struggled so hard to be seen last week and I'm not sure if I can face it. I feel so despondent.

How are you doing now, @ChristmasLightsLover?

Hope people are on the mend- I still have a tickle that catches me out and my voice cracks, but nights are much better.
