A Get Things Done thread

Needanewjobsoon · 29/04/2024 09:44

I am a chronic procrastinator and feeling lonely today so all I want to do is hide in bed and play on my phone.

I have a Ton of sorting to do (mainly resources for work) and my house is awful.

I was just thinking instead of hiding in bed feeling lonely and overwhelmed I'd start a thread in case anyone else fancied company today while Getting Things Done.

I'm going to Go Downstairs at 10.10 and make a cup of tea and Get Started.

(I know some people probably don't find life so overwhelming but I currently am!)

Challenge accepted!

I will gather stuff that should live in the bathroom and put it the right place.

I also must send child benefit letter off. I’ve been putting that off as too hard. But it’s essential.

Castlerigg · 19/05/2024 23:55

Good call.

I will file the car tax document, now that I've paid it! I'm terrible for letting piles of papers accumulate.

Rummikub · 19/05/2024 23:58

Thank you fir the push.

I’m the same with paperwork. I keep searching for the perfect paperwork system!

No room for a filing cabinet and that’s my preferred method. I wish IKEA would design a file drawer for kallax!

YerGlaikit · 20/05/2024 00:09

Hello productive people.

I'm an awful procrastinator like so many of you!

I feel like I was quite productive today so want to try and keep that up.

I'll firm up my to do list and post again. IF I don't end up procrastinating......

Castlerigg · 20/05/2024 00:14

I have a permanent To Do list on the go. I'm excellent at making lists. Slightly less good at completing the tasks in order to cross them off, but no one's perfect. I'm feeling quite smug about my productive day. I do wonder how productive it would have been if it was rainy today.

Needanewjobsoon · 20/05/2024 09:37

Morning procrastinators!

How are we today? I've got an unexpected day home today. All I want to do is sit in the garden, play on my phone and maybe weed a bit.

However realistically my house is a tip and I should spend time sorting it. I could do with doing some washing.

I've realised I'm so resistant to the "shoulds" and instead want to do All The Fun Things. I am 45....

Morning! Still procrastinating.

but I did make a list of all the things I must file ..

Needanewjobsoon · 21/05/2024 11:58

So how did that filing go?

I've had quite a productive morning doing that thing where you get productive doing Other Things than what you need to get done. So yay for that.

But I've been feeling quite low today and got The Dread about sorting a ton of files for work and I need to get going.... hides,

OP posts:
JamSandle · 21/05/2024 11:59

Can I join please?

Needanewjobsoon · 21/05/2024 12:23

Absolutely! I think it's just me today. How are you doing and what do you want to Get Done today?

I'm feeling quite overwhelmed and emotional and not sure why. I'm going to read and have lunch and then at 1.15 I'm going to start with my Big Organising task.

Ive accepted I can't do everything on my list and trying to reduce the overwhelm a bit...

It will be so good when it's done. But my brain is looking round my house at all the undone/not done things too.

Evening all. I've been at the hospital today (minor procedure, all fine) so I haven't done anything at all. I have a sick note, which hopefully I won't waste on being actually sick (or sore), so I'll do some of my online jobs over the next week.

Totally get that about being productive with other tasks except THE task!

Do you have a deadline for the dreaded work file task?

i only got as far as making the list. I’ve only just sat down after being at work, commute and shopping.

I have though dug out the council tax form. Now need to complete it!
Did ring the doc about wait list for adhd assessment. That has been something I’ve avoided for 6 months!

Tomorrow I will implement the do jobs in ad breaks system if I can’t find my flow.

Castlerigg · 22/05/2024 08:16

Thanks @Rummikub, I'm a bit tender, and not moving very fast, but otherwise I'm well thank you.

Hi @JamSandle, what are you hoping to get done today?

I'm going to reply to my solicitor about divorce stuff, and pay my credit card.

Nonewclothes2024 · 22/05/2024 08:28

I've got a six point list of things to do.
The exact same list as yesterday 😬
Let's see if I can get any of it done today.
One of them has a deadline so I'm hoping to get that done.
I've got ADHD and am a professional procrastinator unfortunately.

WoodBurningStov · 22/05/2024 08:33

Ok I've come downstairs and immediately put the sofa blankets (we have dogs) in the wash.
I've also made myself a list of things I need to do work wise.

Anothe · 22/05/2024 08:38

Can I join? I’m about to hide under the duvet with coffee rather than face the day. I’m so impressed you guys are already on it.

Needanewjobsoon · 22/05/2024 09:36

Morning all. Sorry but the phone call about the adhd list made me laugh. I got the forms from my Dr a year ago and have had it on my long term to do list to compile evidence.....

I guess a few of us on this thread may tick the adhd box!

Anothe - hope you're okay. I took my kids to school and have had a frustrating work email so contemplating hiding in bed for a bit before starting. I usually end up googling other work but that's an unproductive cycle I get into.

Wood - well done! cheerleads in support from over hwre

Nonew. Good luck! Mayve choose one of the 6 and just try that?

I didn't end up doing my Big Task yesterday as I had to pick a child up from school unwell. I could have still done it but it broke the flow and I couldn't start! I've turned it into Overwhelming Task I think. Most of my work is out of the house but I need to sort myself out at home too.

Castle hope you are recovering okay. Good luck with those tasks. I cna imagine difficult when emotions are attached too.

I'm feeling low again today so don't ant to start. I really want an Exiting! Or interesting! Distraction. Or company. Ill make a cup of tea and actively procrastinate for a bit and then see if I can get going.

I've got another meeting to prep for but the documents are really interesting for that but shouldnt start that without doing Task 1.

In my job Musings I want a wfh job but my inability to do these home tasks make me worry I'd not actually Get It Done!

I write lists and lists !

I am on A/L this week , so my lists have been whittled through a bit ( still got "Wash the Car" on there .
As it is raining ( since yesterday morning fairly solidly) no washing going out or gardening .
I have decluttered a load on Monday and taken some things to the Charity Shop

Defrosted the fridge/freezer and now need to go food shopping .

Bought clothes/shoes for DD ( but resisted anything myself as I don't need anything right now ) - well I did buy socks (boring) and some Molton Brown for me

I have to post some birthday cards

<Motivated myself to Do Things>

Castlerigg · 22/05/2024 11:04

I'm ticking the ADHD box too, diagnosed about three years ago, age 43.

@Nonewclothes2024 I agree, just choose one job. If you need to break that job down into smaller tasks, do that, and choose one of those. Go for a quick win - which job can you complete quickest or with the least effort?

@Needanewjobsoon Would that approach work for your Big Task? Can you draw it out like a mind map, and then decide which parts to prioritise?

@70isaLimitNotaTarget Well done, you're on fire! I'm currently running down the freezer contents so that I can defrost. Fridge is definitely overdue a clean!

@Anothe Coffee and duvet are so inviting aren't they? But if you spend that time feeling bad about what you haven't done, will it be enjoyable? This is meant as gentle encouragement so I hope it comes across that way.

My avoidance tactic is usually finding excuses to be out of the house, so that I don't have to look at all the things I need to do.

Rummikub · 22/05/2024 11:14

My avoidance tactics involve but not limited to:
staying in bed
mumsnet
becoming very interested in a tv show that at other times I wouldn’t care about.
I mean last night (avoiding going to bed at sensible hour) I watched “when the boat comes in”!! This is from decades ago and I never watched it then but I remember the theme tune as a child.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 22/05/2024 11:16

I never manage to get enough done, and I always struggle to run a house. My mum did so well running a big house and big garden when we were growing up. I can’t manage to run a small house and small garden!

Horriblecushion · 22/05/2024 11:18

I have just seen this thread. Chronic procrastinator. I have been awake since 4.20am and I have not done anything yet. I made a list yesterday of things to do today and I haven't looked at it today.

I need to go for a shower which will take 10 minutes but getting dried and dressed seems to take me a long time. I dont know why because I don't use creams or cosmetics or style my hair.

Horriblecushion · 22/05/2024 11:21

It is now too late to do the most important thing on my list because the place closes at 12 and it is an hour away. I will try to start with another item on the list.

JamSandle · 22/05/2024 20:46

I have some big things and small things but...

I want to clear out some binbags of stuff that have been sat about my room for months now.
