Your surprise pregnancy

I've 3 kids and we aren't having any more for practical reasons but I have a secret little daydream that I find out I'm pregnant with number 4. We always use condoms and they haven't failed us yet. My husband really does what he can to make sure there won't be any more babies!

Because my husband has a very strict contraceptive policy, our 3 kids were very carefully planned. I got pregnant very quickly and started testing early (got early positives with them all!). I was aware from the day I ovulated right up until a few days before my period was due that I could be pregnant. While it was thrilling to find out I was pregnant with my much wanted babies, I do often wonder what it's like to have a surprise pregnancy!

Obviously I know what a surprise pregnancy is, that contraception fails and that people get dates wrong but I'm always fascinated by how it happens and what gives women the clue that they are pregnant. I love reading about cryptic pregnancies too! Does anyone want to share their experience so I can live through you vicariously? I'm feeling really broody!

Fell pregnant once on the implant!

I kept throwing up and I couldnt work out why 😂 also my boobs were absolutely killing me and i was walking past people and could tell what they ate and drank - my sense of smell was so heightened. I didnt work it out for 5 weeks 😂

That's brilliant! How did you feel when you saw the test?

I was shit scared 😂😭 but it was a blessing in disguise as in 12 years I never managed to fall pregnant again after that, was definitely meant to be ❤️ my one golden boy. Did feel really stupid though 😂 all the signs were there and i thought i had cancer or something 🤦🏻‍♀️

My friend was also the same. Tried for a baby for 7 years, eventually split up with her partner because of the stress of not conceiving, slept with a new guy once with protection and fell pregnant! Its gods plan!

My periods hadn't regulated after having my first DC. They were 13/14months at the time. My app told me it was 7days to ovulation... it wasn't 😂🫣.

I knew I was pregnant pretty much straight away, no idea how! Tested early!

They are now a gorgeous 13month old 🥰.

Muffinmakes · 09/02/2024 22:00

I fell pregnant with ds whilst on was on the mini pill. I don't think I missed the pill but rather took it late. Dh was cooking lunch one day and I kept having to put dd1 down to pee. On the 3rd instance he remarked on it. In that moment I just knew. I took a test and it was positive. This was 5 days before my period was due.The needing to pee lots is always an early sign of pregnancy for me.

Ohcomeondontbelikethat · 09/02/2024 22:20

These are so interesting! @4Bangles I'm so glad it all worked out for you!

Everyone who commented seems to have had some early symptoms. I had no symptoms with any of mine until around 8/9 weeks when the nausea kicked it. Otherwise I would never had known except for missing my period and deliberately having sex around ovulation day!

Well I had my period for the first 3 months with DS, so I thought I was only a couple of weeks along when I missed one, they measured him and said I was further along than I thought. So was definitely a surprise, and I only had 6 months left to go, no morning sickness etc.

Bemyclementine · 09/02/2024 22:36

On the mini pill, breast feeding, and dtd once. Was exhausted. Nauseous. Thought it was the non sleeping baby. Got an upset tummy, lasted 2 weeks. Went to GP.......sent for an "early" scan the following week. 19 weeks. Fml.

Schoolrunmumbun · 09/02/2024 22:38

There was an amazing thread a year or two ago where someone thought she had wind and it was a baby that was born a few days later. I think the follow up thread was called It Wasn't Wind it was a baby! and she even shared a pic of the newborn.

i had a very surprise Dc4. DH had, had a vasectomy when I was pregnant with Dc3 and clear samples following in the months after. I had been feeling nauseous & pregnant but didn’t consider being pregnant. I had a very light period but tested a few weeks after and was positive. We were both very shocked and I didn’t go to the midwife for an appointment or get a scan until nearly 15 weeks. I had seriously considered termination but didn’t, finally came around to feeling happy at about 20weeks. He’s 5 now and so very happy he’s here and we went ahead. DH had to have the procedure again as tests then showed it hadn’t worked.

MixedCouple · 09/02/2024 22:45

Snip snip for DH then. Condoms are not 100%. The procedure is very quick and heal up quickly.

Ohcomeondontbelikethat · 09/02/2024 22:51

@MixedCouple he didn't want to up u til recently and I was happy enough with that 'just in case'. He has recently said he wants a vasectomy now and I think it's for the best, so I can get some closure and stop convincing myself I've somehow managed to get pregnant each month. Every month I get my period I feel like a cake that has sunk in the middle. All deflated, and I always thinking 'grrr what are you even for now!?' The snip would put an end to àll of these unnecessary and very pathetic fantasies each month.

My first DD was a bit of a surprise. It was in lockdown 2020, my periods had completely stopped and I stupidly assumed I wasn't ovulating, so we were careless just one time. Of course it happened to be when my body decided to kick ovulation back into gear again 😅

I felt really unwell for a week, had awful stomach issues and really severe period cramps but no period. Panicked and made a GP telephone appointment, realised they would ask about pregnancy so rummaged around and the only test in the house was a digital one, took it so I could tell them I'd done one and it was negative - will never forget the feeling when it said 'pregnant' 🤦 it was absolutely terrifying. Of course it shouldn't have been a huge surprise really as we had been careless, but it felt like such a shock as I didn't even think my body was capable at that point. I ended up being put on a 'preventing unplanned pregnancy' pilot scheme by my midwife, my pregnancy notes had a big blue sticker on the front declaring this which I found oddly mortifying!

I became pregnant with DD2 within 2 weeks of trying, and similarly I hadn't ovulated for a few months before and just happened to start trying when I recommenced ovulating, so bizarre!

I'm so glad it happened though - they're the best thing to have ever happened to me ❤️

HardcoreLadyType · 09/02/2024 22:52

I fell pregnant on the Mirena coil. Basically, if 100,000 women used the Mirena for a year, one of them would fall pregnant, and that was me. The head of obstetrics at my local hospital had never known this happen to another woman, although it was 20 years ago, and the Mirena was relatively new. She said she oversaw around 3000 births a year.

So, yeah, that was a surprise.

New boyfriend, first time we had sex - condom broke, so I took a MAP, and shouldn’t have even been anywhere near fertile time anyway. I missed my period and took a test which was negative. Took another test about 10 days later when still no period and tingly boobs. Showed pregnant (ended In miscarriage).
4 years later and we’re very happily still together, with an amazing almost 2 year old who also wasn’t planned. I was on the pill (never missed one), had the same tingly breasts that I had only had when pregnant that once before and took a test which showed pregnant.

Never had a pregnancy scare before that, but we must be extra fertile together! Though sooner than planned, we wouldn’t have it any other way now, our son is incredible!

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/02/2024 22:55

😱😱😱 at the failed vasectomy story. Glad it all worked out for you but DH had it done and it would be my worst nightmare for it to fail. I’m old and under strict orders to never conceive again after DS’s delivery.

Hiddenvoice · 09/02/2024 22:56

My Dh and I tried for years to get pregnant and just accepted that it wasn’t meant to be. Had a lovely summer exploring new places, he bought a little 2 seater car and I bought the car I was dreaming of. We had a brilliant summer full of fun and then I realised I was 2 days late and very much pregnant. Was blown away and we were both so excited.

We decided after our little one’s first birthday to start trying again as we knew it could potentially take us years to conceive. Surprise positive test after only one month. I didn’t use ovulation tests, we just went with we will stop using contraception and see what happens. Big surprise after taking years with our first baby .

AnneLovesGilbert · 09/02/2024 22:56

I would go for finding a baby on the doorstep though, love me a newborn and getting to enjoy one without the complicated recoveries I’ve had each time would be amazing.

surprise4 · 09/02/2024 23:08

DC4 was a surprise. My periods have always been all over the place and I'd just had a MMC at 12 weeks so when I didn't have a proper period for a few months I thought nothing of it. Started to feel some movements so got myself a test which was positive. Had a scan and I was 21 weeks. Obviously I was delighted to get my rainbow baby.

overthinkersanonnymus · 09/02/2024 23:59

I find this fascinating too op! I also know two women who didn't know they were pregnant until labour started

One was 17 so didn't really take any notice of being sick etc and was partying and the other was fairly overweight and didn't realise she had a bump. I don't know if her periods were irregular before had but they must have been.

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 10/02/2024 04:57

A lady I knew a few years back had 3 little girls one after the other. Found herself pregnant when her little one was about 2 months old. She decided to terminate and have a coil fitted at the same time. She felt rough for months after. The doctor sent her for a scan after a positive test and she was about 6 months gone!!! During the scan they were like “there’s your healthy little girl, and there’s your coil!”. So the termination failed and she managed a term pregnancy with the coil!!!! She was happy in the end as she said this baby was absolutely meant to be!!!!

ViaRia01 · 10/02/2024 05:41

One day I felt a baby kicking so I took a pregnancy test and to our surprise it was positive!

I knew right away I must be quite far along and when I got to the scan I think I was 20 weeks already. Baby is 8 months now - the last year has been a whirlwind !

Meadowfinch · 10/02/2024 06:14

I had a misdiagnosed dermoid, twisted & necrotic ovary & tube, and resulting abdo infection in my 30s when childless. By the time they'd operated, and sorted me out, the doctors thought my chances of conceiving were pretty small.

Then more than a decade later, my periods stopped at 44. They'd been intermittent for a while, so I assumed the menopause. Finally went to the GP because I was incredibly tired and she took a blood test.

It was quite a shock 😂😂Eventually a nice shock.
