When did ear buds give way to headphones?

I failed to notice it 😂

I was in the gym, struggling as always with my ear buds (tiny ears, need really loud music too) when I noticed the girl next to me had traditional style headphones on.

Looking round the gym, headphones outnumbered earbuds by two to one, and it's the same in the street, on the bus etc.

I bought some headphones and they are HEAVENLY. In fact my workout was twenty minutes longer because the tunes kept me going.

I'm behind the curve obviously - when did headphones take over?

I like my buds for running / the gym they are blue tooth and they've never fallen out. They're nothing fancy but comfy enough. Also have speedo swimming ones which come with the speedo MP3 player (they are wired, but I can clip my length counter to them so I don't lose count of my lengths).
I hate the hard plastic earbuds like the apple ones, as they are just really uncomfortable.
I have over the ear Bluetooth headphones for boring chores or dog walking, but I can't wear them for anything more physical than a walk as they fall off.

I’ve got both! Wireless Beats noise-cancelling headphones I bought to be able to sit in my own garden when I lived next door to the loudest family in the world, and very cheap but utterly fantastic in-ear pods with a bit that hooks over my ear that I bought for an overseas trip last year just because I didn’t want to take anything expensive and now wear for the gym. They were less than £30, I only have to plug the charging unit in once every few months, and they’re soft so really comfortable.

Surely you just wear what's comfortable anyway? In my gym it's all ear buds still but I'm here in my big bin lid style headphones because my tiny ears can't handle buds.
