When did ear buds give way to headphones?

I failed to notice it 😂

I was in the gym, struggling as always with my ear buds (tiny ears, need really loud music too) when I noticed the girl next to me had traditional style headphones on.

Looking round the gym, headphones outnumbered earbuds by two to one, and it's the same in the street, on the bus etc.

I bought some headphones and they are HEAVENLY. In fact my workout was twenty minutes longer because the tunes kept me going.

I'm behind the curve obviously - when did headphones take over?

I use Shokz headphones for running and walking. They are often the only ones that are race approved. You can still hear what's going on around you but the sound quality is really good.

I had a set of those and thought they were fantastic. Unfortunately I couldn't get comfortable in them because of my glasses. Tried every which way. I gave them to my teenager and he absolutely loves them.

I’ve never got on with ear buds! I have some Marshall Bluetooth headphones and they’re amazing - about 80 hours battery life.

Thats a shame! I wear glasses and when I run I use a sports strap at the back of my glasses to stop them keep falling down and they are quite comfy with my Shokz.

Ooh, do you have a link to the sports strap or something similar?

My Marshall headphones are adjustable and fit quite well around my glasses.

They were only off amazon like these. Only thing is not to have them too tight otherwise my glasses steam up 😀

Thank you, I had no idea this was a thing!

I use these to keep the pods in. Small ears too. I only use them in bed listening to podcasts. My super duper hearing aids are bluetooth and the sound is pitched perfectly for me, so no need for earphones or pods unless in bed.

I never stopped wearing headphones, but I'm not one to follow the crowd and give way to what's in fashion.

gamerchick · 10/02/2024 12:05

I do see their uses for bed like.

inappropriateportioncontrol · 10/02/2024 12:41

Has anyone any experience of these that don't go in your ear at all?

UnctuousUnicorns · 10/02/2024 12:43

I always use over ear Bluetooth headphones. I can't tolerate anything stuck in my ears.

Sitting up, I use my headphones, lying down, a sleep mask with incorporated earphones.

I have some cheapo buds because they are small and can just live in my coat pocket, but much prefer headphones. I first bought some to go in my hospital bag when I was expecting DC - thank god I did because we spent 5 days there and downloaded stuff on ipad kept me sane and drowned out the rest of the ward.

I have something similar for travel, as my regular headphones are a bit bulky, but they still have over ear phones. I have these, they work very well and pack very compactly into their own wee bag:

Yes I've just renewed my apple phone

I found the wired ear buds fell out so wireless ones would be even more worse?

Do the old fashioned headphones work over glasses

Yip my headphones cost thirty quid in TK Maxx! Apple can hop it.

My DH bought some headphones in TK Maxx today for the gym, as ear buds aren't noise cancelling enough for him. He's dead chuffed as they were £15 on the clearance shelf, he's tested them and he's impressed.

RhubarbGingerJam · 10/02/2024 12:55

Few years ago - my teens went from wanting ear buds to headphones.

Out and about I still see many ear buds - so it's not a complete change over yet.

I wear glasses and find over ear headphones okay, I just make sure I don't have them too tight.

greengreengrass25 · 10/02/2024 13:02

Thanks

Do you think the ear buds would be rubbish if you had problems with old style wired buds?

Sorry, I couldn't say how they are for running etc, I have mobility problems and walk with a stick, so running is impossible for me.

Waitingfordoggo · 10/02/2024 13:11

I much prefer headphones to ear buds. I think I must have weirdly shaped lugholes as ear buds were never comfortable for me and the sound wasn’t great. Also (sorry) I think I have particularly waxy ears and that’s not good with buds. DH bought me headphones for Christmas and they’re great. I think they were about £30 and a common brand (can’t remember and can’t be arsed to go and look but it’s a three letter initialism that begins with J I think).

MrsCarson · 10/02/2024 13:20

Dd wears her big Bluetooth headphones over glasses no problem, She also likes them as they keep her ears warm in the cold walking to uni.

kitsuneghost · 10/02/2024 13:31

My ears don't take ear buds well.
I love my big headphones they are really comfy and you feel more 'enclosed' in the sound. You need to take the time to pick a pair that suits though. I got cheap ones for work and they are really uncomfortable. But my Marshall ones are great.

Trulyme · 10/02/2024 13:33

Earbuds are so much easier to carry around but I started using headphones when I started getting ear infections.

Earbuds also slip off when you’re at the gym I find.

I mean stepping out unaware of your surroundings isn't good.

But I wasn't aware I was supposed to be engaging constantly with my baby while she's in the pram? Why is this necessary? In fact, I actively avoid making eye contact and engaging with mine sometimes so that she watches her surroundings and nods off Grin

It’s alright while she’s very little. But I often see parents with toddlers in their buggies with headphones in. I saw one little girl get excited and point at something trying to tell her mum and the mum was oblivious. I found that really sad. I wonder how many times she’ll try before she gives up?

Our kids have to compete with so much these days for our attention. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to put headphones away when your kids learning to or can talk. Me and DS never stop chatting walking along.
