I've done 2 this year

  1. I've unsubscribed / marked as spam from nearly all my mailing lists. Now my inbox is an oasis of calm and I don't spend what feels like hours every week wading through emails I don't want My spam file is brimming over!
  2. I found a sharpie and (once I was sure they were the right way round!) labelled my double fitted sheets with side and top - wish I'd done this years ago not having to shuffle them about trying to work out which way up they go

Waste disposal use for vegetable waste is not very green . You are wasting lots of fresh drinking quality water creating a slurry that adds to the overload of our sewerage processing plants.

Perhaps It would be better to parcel veg and Fruit waste and offer to nieghbours or local allotments who wil gratefully turn it into useful compost.

Where does the food waste go when it’s recycled? You have to use a biodegradable food waste bag in the bin here when you recycle it . Surely it’s better to go in the sewage system than being transported to China or whatever.

Our food waste goes to a local anaerobic digestion plant. It produces biogas (methane being the main part) and nutrient rich fertiliser. Something useful from the food waste we throw out. We can use any bag we like to line our bins, the plant has a separator. So it costs nothing, I just use an old bread or veg bag.
Much better than sending it down the drain to our overworked sewerage treatment facilities, or pumped as overflow into the sea.

firesail · 17/02/2024 09:27

Use the charity clothes bags that come through the door as bin bags. Haven't used a bin bag in years.

We get brown biodegradable bags put on our recycling bins every week. It’s transported locally and produces biogas. We buy our excellent and very rich fertiliser from the local recycle centre. Our buses all run on biogas.

Even our 2-year olds know what goes in what bin (Three bins, divided into 10 sections)

This is madness. Makes me sad that this is still done in some countries when we can do so much better.

https://twitter.com/OhCobblers2That/status/1758792516575322231/photo/1 I ordered a Kettle Tipper SKU MS27382 for £9.95 on the 13th February from Mobility Smart and it arrived on the 16th Feb! I'm crippled with Rheumatoid and Osteo arthritis all over me and it's already been such a big help!

@MoonWoman69 The reason breadbags are great for food disposal is that you already have the bag anyway as you bought the bread, and it’s getting a second use. Our council encourages this. What you are doing is just incredibly wasteful.

Cereal bags also work!

Edited

Agree - cereal bags are also great to line the very bottom of your bin before putting the bags in

Please can we have a new thread?

We are very lucky to have a food waste service and have a caddy then goes out in food waste bin

Yes, we have several huge airtight bins on our estate which are intended for food waste and are emptied every week. They don't smell at all.

We rarely used the food waste service where we lived before as there was nowhere suitable to store the smelly bin outside. Here we can nip along with the waste every day if necessary.
I use a metal bin with a plastic liner which can go in the dishwasher.

I have a mini lakeland dryer with cover. When using plug in small dehumidifier shut window and door. It takes half the time to dry.
If mould in corner of shower, place bleach on tissue paper, remove in morning black mould will be gone.
Save all 20p in large old vodka bottle. Once filled around £500.
We also save £2 coins each year.

Sell old GCSE and A level study books on vinted.
Also sell unwanted clothes etc on vinted.
Buy bulk loo rolls, toothpaste
5 litre washing up liquid, hand soap.

Loo rolls ticktock
Rest costco

What's the point of this please from your point of view?

Whether it is in the bottle or in your purse, it is still your £500 plus then you have the inconvenience of having to take it to the bank/coin counter. Don't get it.

Totally agree. My sister sold her car on ebay. Cash buyer ( nothing extortionate amount wise) and was grilled by the bank when she went to deposit the money.

KrazyboutKillian · 18/02/2024 19:09

Based on recommendations on this thread I ordered from whistlefish , they have arrived , and are lovely , great quality , even the envelopes , I got the £1 per card deal which made them a bargain .

nopuppiesallowed · 19/02/2024 21:18

It's because so many people are being scammed.

LilacpointMummy · 20/02/2024 09:16

Just thought of one - I got really fed up with my kitchen scissors going walkabout so I put them on a curly cable (like this DFsucces 6 PCS Stretchy Spiral Key Ring With Color Carabiner,Stretchy Key Ring for Men Women and Kids,Theftproof Anti-Lost Stretch Cord Safety Key Ring with Metal for Keys, Wallet, Cellphone amzn.eu/d/adQcF3h)
One end attached to fixed point in the kitchen.
I can still remove them if necessary, but stops other family members wandering off with them.

@LilacpointMummy

got really fed up with my kitchen scissors going walkabout

A simple thing to make life easier is just buy a pair of scissors for every room you need one. We have Fiskars 17cm scissors everywhere - they are brilliant - two in the kitchen as kept food safe clean for cutting herbs etc, one in home office, one in every bedroom. give them a pot or specific place to live in and everyone knows where they are, don't need to go hunting for them and they never go missing. I too got fed up with looking for scissors and wish I'd done this before. It's simple but it has saved so much time both looking for missing scissors and going to other rooms/upstairs/downstairs to find a pair.

Fiskars scissors are great and they have lots of other types.

I store the right size bin bags in the bottom of each bin.

Atomickittyxx · 20/02/2024 10:40

I brought a carpet sweeper, best thing ever!!! our carpet gets covered in bits constantly as I've got 4 DC I now only need to hoover once a week and my carpet is always fresh looking. My 1 year old is not so happy though as his favourite thing to do was scavenge biscuit crumbs 😂.

LilacpointMummy · 20/02/2024 11:30

@twopencepetula I tried scissors everywhere, but they were never where I needed them!

@Atomickittyxx does a carpet sweeper work on hard floors? I'd like a way to clean up crumbs without having to lug the hoover out each time 😁
