Hello, I’m going vegan but like a latte. What is the best non-Dairy milk that tastes the most like cow’s milk and isn’t massively processed and still has added vitamins and calcium?

thank you!

I liked Oatly best in tea they're all fine in coffee

Deathraystare · 07/02/2024 17:07

When there was a shortage of milk I bought some of the Oatly Barista style - for ordinary coffee and it tasted very nice!!!

Re the high cholesterol - have you been given your HDL and LDL numbers and the ratio between the two?

I changed to soya many years ago & wanted to find a milk that tastes similar to cows milk. I don't like Alpro so went for Tesco's own brand soya - sweetened. Now over the years I've discovered any own brand is absolutely fine.

Peasinthefreezer · 07/02/2024 20:22

For coffee any oat milk barista version, except Alpro, not keen on that at all. Favourite is Minor Figures but I tend to get which ever is on offer.

For tea and on Cereal use any supermarkets own long life unsweetened Soya for about 50p a carton.

Even whole milk is only 4% fat. I’m pretty sure when they told you to cut dairy they were thinking of cheese and butter.

Missingmyusername · 07/02/2024 20:54

Alpro my cuppa is the closest to dairy milk imo.

Vegan cheese - probably violife.
Vegan butter I like Sainsbury’s plant butter (salted). DH and DD can’t tell the difference.

DH isn’t vegan but he has almond milk on cereal. He also bought some Lidl vegan ice cream by accident- delicious, nobody knew.

Chocolate - Lindt 😋
Sainsbury vegan coleslaw - can’t tell the difference.
Aldi vegan pot salad- no difference.

Aren’t these things a bit fattening though OP? Is it just dairy you have to cut or fat (literally no idea if the vegan stuff is less fatty).

Oatly Barista or whole. I like the Alpro coconut milk too but not everyone does.

MCOut · 07/02/2024 23:01

This was years ago but Asda did an own brand Soy Milk sweetened by apple juice which was surprisingly nice for cereal.

PickAChew · 07/02/2024 23:06

As per pp, just cut down on hard cheese and butter. Dairy alternative "milks" are all highly processed and many of them are utterly bogging and/ or ridiculously sweet.

I'm not sure it makes sense to cut milk because of high cholesterol and replace with eg oatly barista which is highly processed, contains seed oils and will spike your blood sugar much more than cows milk. Did the hospital provide any more detail on their guidance?

As a pp said, I'd cut cheese and butter and focus on eating lots more plants but I'm not sure swapping cows milk for eg oat milk in coffee is particularly helpful here.

Whatdoesthatbuttondo · 08/02/2024 07:23

I’m veggie and I’ve been told to cut my cholesterol, and to do it by switching to skimmed milk, stop using butter and eat 0% fat yogurt.

You don’t need to cut out dairy completely. Just the high fat stuff!

Augustus40 · 08/02/2024 07:27

Oat milk is high in calories. I prefer Alpro soya milk (light).

Oat milk is very delicious though.

Augustus40 · 08/02/2024 07:28

Soya is good for cholesterol too.

themusingsofaninsomniac · 08/02/2024 07:30

Oatly barista blend

Dogfisher · 08/02/2024 07:49

Oat milk is lovely but has loads of rapeseed oil in it which is apparently really bad for you so I don't drink it any more. It is nutritionally very poor and I now have soya milk.

AvoSourdough · 08/02/2024 11:37

I try every milk alternative I come across and for me the best for coffee is Califia Farms oat barista (but not the organic version!)

The one that tastes most like cows milk is alpro not milk
https://groceries.asda.com/product/oat-nut-drinks/alpro-not-m-lk-semi-long-life-drink/1000383157736

The one with least 'added stuff' is Plenish (but not great for coffee)

JÖRĐ did an oat & barley which was nice but I don't think they do it anymore.

CCLCECSC · 08/02/2024 11:42

Oatly whole. Liked my coffee drinking family and friends
