Best non-dairy Milk

FloraClover · 05/02/2024 19:42

Hello, I’m going vegan but like a latte. What is the best non-Dairy milk that tastes the most like cow’s milk and isn’t massively processed and still has added vitamins and calcium?

thank you!

I prefer Alpro oat or Oatly semi/barista/whole. Moma barista is good too. Don't know about how "processed" they are by your standards; all types of milk and milk alternatives are processed to an extent.

Minor Figures is really good, I prefer it to Oatly and it is usually cheaper. I also like Moma, but to be honest we go on what is on offer/cheapest out of those three usually.

HAF1119 · 05/02/2024 20:08

I think you have to slowly try quite a few of them to find what fits with you. For me I find sweetened almond milk the best fit in a tea, oat milk in porridge (strange perhaps!), but I know other people who can't stand different vegan offerings. There are a lot of options out there. I would start with the oat which tends to be one of the favourites in my experience when I have someone DF having a hot drink, but if it doesn't suit then keep trying! :)

Read this and thought “non dairy milk - maybe Galaxy?”

Snowdropsarecoming · 05/02/2024 20:11

All non dairy milks which are forfeited with calcium and iodine are UPFs.

Notcontent · 05/02/2024 20:24

Oat milk is the probably the most popular one and quite good in coffee but a little bit odd tasting in tea. However, it is quite processed and can give some people bloating. Soy milk got a lot of bad press in recent years but actually soy products made from soy beans as opposed to soy isolates are really healthy - so foods like tofu and good quality soy milk are a great natural choice. Just keep away from processed soy products.

WeirdPookah · 05/02/2024 20:27

I really like the Minor Figures Oat Barista, but Lidl's Oat Barista comes a close second!
Lidl's unsweetened Soya is good too, I recently tried it again after years of not putting soya in coffee because it would curdle, but it won some BBD food award, so for 50p I thought worth a try! And it was really good!

Mairzydotes · 05/02/2024 20:32

Oat .

I love a coconut latte but that has a distinct taste.

Snoozymoozy · 05/02/2024 20:32

I've tried most brands of oat milk and oatly comes out top for me. The sainsburys own brand oat milk is also pretty good (and cheaper)

minipie · 05/02/2024 20:34

They are all very highly processed

Are you concerned about blood sugar spikes (eg, do you have PCOS, or any signs of pre diabetes) - if so I would head towards nut milks rather than oat milk

Bessica · 05/02/2024 20:34

Plenish milks have no nasties in them. The best one for tea is Alpro cuppa. Oat milk does have a lot of oils in it and does tend to be more processed than the others. Coconut milk is a good one for coffee and makes lovely porridge. Almond milk and soya milk can be good all rounders.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 05/02/2024 20:35

I find soya milk the best. All the others are too sweet for me - I can just about cope with them in coffee, but in tea? Bleurgh!

bakewellbride · 05/02/2024 20:39

Aldi oat milk is kindest to your purse! Alpro and oatly are nice but Cost more.

Ignore the negativity you're likely to get (even some on this thread) for your choice. At least oat milk is designed for humans, cows milk is meant for calves and when you think about it like that it really is so very weird / wrong / cruel that humans drink it!

soupfiend · 05/02/2024 20:39

What about watered down coconut milk?

FloraClover · 05/02/2024 21:19

I assume that the deleted messages were the PP being nasty? Why? Perhaps just chill and don’t comment?

anyway, the reason for the change is due to high cholesterol and told to cut dairy by the hospital. Does that change people’s thoughts?

sorry if that’s a drip feed.

appreciate the advice so far. I will have a look in the shops tomorrow

I’ve recently started using an app called Yuka, which tells you about additives in food and helps make healthier choices. We’ve stopped using oatly barista since I got its verdict! Something like high in phosphorous. I’ve not found a substitute that I love the taste of as much. But my fave nut milk is definitely rude health hazelnut milk. Rice milk based, has a natural sweetness and I like it in muesli.

Helloandgoodmorning2 · 05/02/2024 21:37

Minor Figures Organic Oat Barrista is the one we use. I buy it on subscription from the manufacturer.

Ihatespellingmisteaks · 05/02/2024 21:40

I like soya milk as it is the only plant milk with roughly the same amount of protein as cow's milk.

But I did have to drink my coffee black for a while as it tasted a bit weird to start with. Now it just tastes normal.

ThursdayTomorrow · 05/02/2024 21:42

Almond is the most palatable in my opinion, especially for children.

Is it not high fat dairy you need to reduce?

The Lidl oat, almond and coconut and rice milks aren't too badly priced anfvtadte ok too.

superplumb · 07/02/2024 16:58

I'm not vegan but I had a hot chocolate the other day with coconut milk in by mistake ( pret a manger) and it was lush. Like liquid bounty.
I also like almond milk in porridge coffee and overnight oats

Bax765 · 07/02/2024 17:04

I've been through most brands of oat milk and the best I've found is Califia Farms Barista Blend.

A lot of the oat milks are quite watery but this one is nice and creamy and works really well in hot drinks!
