I was given this £10 M&S perfume (eau de toilette) as a gift

I like it. I can't really see what's nicer about the (much) more expensive perfumes I have. What is the actual difference and can people tell I'm wearing cheap perfume?

I wore an M&S perfume as my everyday perfume for years. I'm sad it's been discontinued. I don't think the scent lasts as long (eau de toilette never does as much as eau de parfum anyway) but I think it's fine for day to day.

Chrispackhamspoodle · 31/01/2024 19:26

My teen daughter wears this.It came from my M&S advent calendar and she nabbed it off me.She smells lovely.

I got this perfume in one of their brilliant
summer makeup bags. I took it with me on holiday cos it was a small bottle and the smell always reminds me of Greece.

I think designer perfume is one of the biggest scams on earth. If it smells nice & you like it, it doesn't matter how much it cost imo

CakeIsNotAvailable · 31/01/2024 20:06

I love the M&S "Discover" perfumes - I have two of them. Apparently they are dupes of famous perfumes, but I like them in their own right.

Noted Aromas do good dupes as well - I have their version of Jo Malone's English Pear & Freesia and it's indistinguishable from the real thing.

I've had a few of their perfumes in various sets/calendars and the shay and blue ones too , all have been nice. I do find EDT wears off quicker but for that price I'll just carry a small bottle in my handbag

gingersnappz · 31/01/2024 20:12

I wear their Pink Pepper one and get so many compliments about it. They're such good value.

BouleDeSuif · 31/01/2024 20:17

That's a lovely one, I buy it for my friend's birthday as it's her favourite.
Marks used to do one called True Red and it was so nice. I used to get so many people asking what it was.

LoopyGremlin · 31/01/2024 20:19

I bought my husband a lovely one from M&S called citrus and moss. He gets loads of compliments and it was £12. He wears it more than the £110 Sauvage.

ABiscuitSinner · 31/01/2024 20:22

Nothing wrong with it at all. I went through a stage of collecting perfume and wearing it daily. ATM I much prefer clean skin, no perfume. NOW THAT'S cheap!

ChocoChocoLatte · 31/01/2024 20:24

House of me and three girls and we have several of the M&S ones because they're inexpensive and lovely.

greengreengrass25 · 31/01/2024 20:24

I love that one

I also like the Autograph Neroli

NeedToKnow101 · 31/01/2024 20:52

I bought myself one of their £10 ones recently and I love it. Lots of lovely scents there.

JanuarySlog · 31/01/2024 20:56

I used to wear Isis. I think they changed the name, haven't bought it for a long time. It was lovely though and lasted well.

I like perfume but never spend a lot, and don't really understand the scathing 'cheap perfume' type remarks. Something smells nice or it doesn't.

Cheap perfume doesn't usually last as long once sprayed... and trust me I've bought pound shop perfumes before that definitely smelled 'cheap'

SilkyMoonfaceSaucepanMan · 31/01/2024 22:01

I’m going to sound like a huge fragrance snob, because I am, but usually, high end fragrance (not to be confused with designer) is so complex and layered and lasts and lasts and that’s why it’s worth the price tag. With designer you usually are paying for the name and celebrity marketing.

I will add, that doesn’t mean cheap fragrance can’t smell nice, because it can (and one of my all time favourites is very cheap) and you should wear what you like, but the notes will be far fewer and the blend will be basic. Usually (not always) it also won’t last as long.

For me, it’s like the difference between decent fine dining and comfort food. I love both and both have their place but it’s clear why the former is very expensive and the latter is not. And this has very little to do with preferences.

TheDuck2018 · 31/01/2024 22:08

Home Bargains sell a knock-off of Jo Malone's 'Pomegranate' and it's identical! You won't believe me, but it's true, they smell exactly the same.

LadyBird1973 · 31/01/2024 22:17

I love their pink pepper one. It's very similar to la vie est belle and lasts ages.
Agree that perfume doesn't have to be £££ to be lovely. One of my favourites is Britney Spears Midnight Fantasy.

EffortlessDistraction · 31/01/2024 22:45

Yes, I wear quite a few M&S fragrances. Although I've never liked any of the Shay and Blue ones when I've had them in the beauty boxes.

I can't get on with expensive perfumes, they are nearly always too strong and give me a headache. But I am quite sensitive, there are certain well known ones that I can't bear being around someone wearing (but I don't know what they are because you can't ask in those circumstances).

puddypud · 31/01/2024 22:56

I love M&S and Zara perfumes. I do also love expensive ones too. I always go for the warm, cosy laconic fragrances. I just like a lovely scent, I don't care if it's cheap or not.

Yes I love Fantasy! My MIL gets me a bottle every Christmas. We keep it in the bathroom instead of air-freshener.

I'm a fan of M&S's Florentyne.
I'm experimenting with their newer ones, trying to find something with a bit of longevity.

rookiemere · 01/02/2024 07:28

I love the fact you can buy the mixed sampler of M&S perfumes for around £5. I take them on holiday and enjoy having a variety of fragrances to choose from.

cuckyplunt · 01/02/2024 07:29

I love the coconut one, the orange one is lovely too.

FranktheElf · 01/02/2024 07:38

I have that exact one and it's lovely. Got a smaller bottle for £6 and it's so handy to have in my bag. Id definitely get the bigger bottle for a tenner.

I've converted my friend to M&S perfumes too and we are now obsessed and sniff all the testers when we go in!
