Is it really bad luck to do washing on New Years Day?

I want to clean my house tomorrow afternoon, but does anyone buy into the whole bad luck thing? I’m not going to have much other time to do it all week so that will feel like bad luck if I don’t get it done!

Do people really, genuinely believe this stuff? Confused

Best not to risk it 😬

The forecast is sunny and breezy here tomorrow so I’ll have a load out first thing. Never heard of this before!

How does it work around the world though? It's New Year's Day already in several countries and some countries will be doing washing when it's NYD here but last year there.

To be fair, there are a few people I'd be quite happy to wash out of my life this year.

I don't have many family members left but years ago if told 'do that and you'll wash a family member out of your life' I'd have been asking 'do I get to chose which ones?'

treacledan71 · 31/12/2023 19:27

A relative used to tell me if you wash on new years day it washes someone out of your life. I used to ignore it for years but she did suddenly die so I don't do it now. Do think it's an old wife's tale though.

Well I am 59 years old and I have never heard of this. You certainly live and learn on mn. I do hate doing laundry on a Sunday but that's because I see Monday as my main laundry day. Planning to do bedding wash tomorrow but not too early because I live in a flat and appreciate that some of my neighbours won't be getting up before noon tomorrow!

IvorTheEngineDriver · 31/12/2023 19:47

Never heard this before!

LouScot · 31/12/2023 19:52

@Judystilldreamsofhorses ah! Thanks! I was looking for a fellow Scot 😂 I've literally just finished hanging some up in the back bedroom, emptied the bins and put the recycling out!

AllAroundMyCat · 31/12/2023 20:25

It's gobshite. Crack on.

mumda · 31/12/2023 20:26

You'll wash someone out of your life.

That's how it goes.
But as you don't get to make a decision who is eliminated, is it a risk you want to take?

PS: I don't need an excuse to avoid laundry.

Gowlett · 31/12/2023 20:29

Never heard of it… My house is trashed so I’ll be doing a big tidy / clean next week, including laundry tomorrow. I’ll take it easy on Nollaig na mBan, though. It’s an Irish tradition that I like.

I thought I might haul the duvets to the launderette tomorrow because everyone else will be nursing hangoovers and it'll be empty.

When I was a teen my friend’s mum was obsessively clean( these days would be labelled OCD) and she would never wash on NYD. The only day of the year unless she was on holiday. My DM just laughed!

Darceybeau · 31/12/2023 21:06

I’m superstitious so no washing for me tomorrow. It is supposed to be washing your luck away for the new year.

And how will you know if it was the washing that did that or just random circumstance?

Darceybeau · 31/12/2023 21:45

I have no idea but as a superstitious person I just don’t wash clothes. It’s been a thing in my family for years. I do not want to take that chance.

Edited

Seriously? you'll worry over a made up superstition?

What people will do to themselves.

Darceybeau · 31/12/2023 22:14

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain
I’m entitled to do what I want to do and if I’m a superstitious person that means no washing then I don’t see why or how that bothers you.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 31/12/2023 22:18

I knew about this. Have done for years. I usually try to stick to it but if I can't I don't actually fret about it.

We always do 'the big wash' on a Sunday anyway so this year it just worked out. Our laundry basket is empty. Yay! 😁

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 31/12/2023 22:19

Bothers me? amuses me, rather. All these people going along with something made up because they think Someone's up there checking on their laundry habits and preparing to smite the family if the rules aren't followed. I find it ludicrous and pathetic.

mrsmacmc · 31/12/2023 22:19

No washing here tomorrow and all the bins are emptied/put out before the bells. Fresh bedding on and showered too as no showers on NYD. Calendar also taken down and front door will be opened at the bells to let the old year out and new year in. Lang may yer lum reek!

I don't, but I would not start a washing machine at 10am tomorrow morning.

megletthesecond · 31/12/2023 22:27

I don't do laundry on NYD. My late Gran would come back and haunt me.

Alwaystired23 · 31/12/2023 22:43

I've done all my washing today. I thought if you washed clothes New years Day, you'd wash someone away. I obviously know this isn't true, but part of me doesn't want to tempt fate either 🤣
