What do you do on New Year’s Day?

Just wondering what everyone else does. We never do anything for New Year’s Eve as we’re generally too tired to stay up late. When I was little my dad always used to drive us to the beach for a walk on New Year’s Day but the weather this year looks atrocious. We’ve also ended up in Ikea a few times on New Year’s Day as it’s generally very quiet and the dc see it as a great day out(!) Just looking for some inspiration of what to do this year, DH and I get very little time off between us, we’ve both been back at work this week. Maybe the cinema?

Usually beach walk for DH and thw kids and a sea swim for me 🥶🥶
if not then a big walk somewhere countrysidey near us or a NT property of it isn’t too heaving.

NahHumBrag · 29/12/2023 16:49

Go for a long run - I love it, starting the new year with a fresh head (and I’m a boozer by nature normally!).

GoatsareGOAT · 29/12/2023 16:52

We go to the zoo- because the kids love it, we get membership for Christmas & it's open!

I'm at work this year.... nights....in a men's prison

Hopefully in a better mood than they were last week.

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 29/12/2023 16:56

Take the tree down

Cotswoldbee · 29/12/2023 17:15

We usually make a start on taking the decorations down and having two dogs, always go for at least one good walk.

HouseNoMore · 29/12/2023 17:28

Go for a walk, new year clean, take down decs and finish the Christmas food

ErrolTheRednosedDragon · 29/12/2023 17:30

Depends on the weather. Usually involves finding somewhere that's open for either lunch or dinner, or else sometimes dd and DH make me a special meal.
Yeah, one of those birthdays. Grin

Hibernatalie · 29/12/2023 17:32

Pub lunch?

Squirrelblanket · 29/12/2023 17:38

A walk if the weather allows, otherwise it's a total chill out day.

Polis · 29/12/2023 17:39

I will probably be stacking firewood.

Raera · 29/12/2023 17:56

We will be away in our campervan. Pub meal NY eve. NY day will be weather dependent, so a countryside walk, or stay snuggled up and read!

girlfriend44 · 29/12/2023 18:27

Depends on the weather.

CeriB82 · 29/12/2023 18:29

Always a mountain hike for me. Then a good clean

justjuggling · 30/12/2023 01:56

Usually see family, very relaxed day - roast beef, Fromm and board games. I’m on call for work this NYD so hoping it’s a quiet one.

idontlikealdi · 30/12/2023 01:57

Go for a walk and eat steak pie. Not at the same time.

LangMayYerLumReek2024 · 30/12/2023 02:09

Big family roast dinner.

Catsmere · 30/12/2023 02:50

Sit at home relieved that bloody NYE is over.

Topseyt123 · 30/12/2023 03:20

Stay at home. Perhaps a walk if the weather allows.

General relief that Christmas and New Year are just about over with. I'll take the tree down if I haven't done so beforehand and put the last of the Christmas cards into the recycling bin.

mondaytosunday · 30/12/2023 06:01

Well this year we'll be arriving from an overnight flight after visiting family for the first time since the pandemic! So back home and a chill day recovering before gearing up for work/college on the 3rd.
But most years not that different. I get pretty tired of the Xmas decs so think about packing them away. If nice maybe an extra long dog walk. Just really reflecting on the past year and planning on a few goals for the new year.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/12/2023 06:02

Throw out the sugar and alcohol. Urg.

Someone tell me this is the day to start plunging. My mates do it and I'm too soft.

MinnieMountain · 30/12/2023 06:21

This year we’re going for a walk with DH’s cousin and her family. 10yo will be at a friend’s in the evening. And we need to take the Christmas tree down.

MissingMoominMamma · 30/12/2023 06:23

Big walk, nice dinner (a bit like Christmas Day).

Hopingforno2in2024 · 30/12/2023 07:46

Zoo for us :)

fluffyduvetcover · 30/12/2023 08:01

Up early, get the tree out to the garden, clean the house, open all windows. Later sit down to a family roast late lunch
