To ask for your family game recommendations

What have you played this Christmas that’s proved a winner for your family of different ages? Perhaps something a little unusual.

We've been invited to join another family for NYE - they have children 11 and 13. We’re looking to take them a few gifts including a family game. They’re sporty, well educated and like a fun time. There will be people between the ages of 4 - 70 there on the night, though would like to get them something they might enjoy as a family.

Muffin Time is fun and raucous and suitable for any number of people of any ages.

There is a video on how to play it here but the game itself is cheaper on Amazon.

QuillBill · 26/12/2023 14:05

Ticket to Ride is a really good and more sensible game.

Okaaaay · 26/12/2023 14:11

@QuillBill thank you - will look at both

Rummikub is an oldie but goodie.

BrightBaubles · 26/12/2023 14:16

Scrawl

Brilliant game- you won't regret it

AuntMarch · 26/12/2023 14:16

I love rummikub, nobody ever wants to play with me!

RubySundayy · 26/12/2023 14:18

We enjoyed Sounds Fishy recently with nieces and nephews aged 4-18, various grandparents etc

babbaganoush · 26/12/2023 14:18

Six second scribble is fab

Okaaaay · 26/12/2023 16:54

Great list people - thank you. Looking them all up. So hard to know what they’ll enjoy!

We've got a few new games this Christmas. Only played Magic Rabbit so far which is a collaborative game. You have numbered rabbits and hats. The rabbits are hidden and hats visible on top. You have to get the right rabbit with the right hat and then in the right order but you can't talk to each other about the game and if you check a rabbit you can't show anybody else. And you've only got 2.5 mins to do it.

Came here to say this. I was recommended it on here, bought it and we played it last night. Brilliant! Simple premise, quick rounds, lots of fun.

I asked everyone to rate it. 9/10 was the lowest score it was awarded. And we play a lot of games!

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 26/12/2023 17:02

We also like ticket to ride, Carcassonne, sushi go, Azul, through the desert.....

For something more involved dinosaur island is sooooo much fun.

We've got forbidden desert this year too but not played it yet. Played forbidden Island a while back which was good. I think forbidden desert is a little step up in difficulty.

This was recommended but we didn't really enjoy it- half the time people forgot the trap cards etc.
If you have a steam account Jackbox

Lots of games you can play together using phone as a controller. Much much cheaper than card games and more importantly zero mess/cards to store!

Eeeek so tricky to decide - the reviews don’t help as there are always some not loving it. Will keep reviewing your choices

Oooh I love cards against humanity it does need the right crowd though. I know some, erm prim and proper shall we say people who just kill the mood.

Carcassoneship · 26/12/2023 22:20

Kids against maturity is also good (less rude than cards against humanity).

If they're sporty (and maybe competitive), Catan is always good fun

Mumaway · 26/12/2023 22:20

Whatever you do don't buy Beat The Parents. Truly terrible idea of the winners choosing the prizes and the kids thinking we're going to follow through with their 'Yes Day' prize

idontlikealdi · 26/12/2023 22:20

Exploding kittens

Beautifulsunflowers · 26/12/2023 22:22

We played the sock game today with young kids and grandparents up to 77!
basically 2 teams, 2 long socks filled with various small items. Spin the spinner and it lands on an item you have to find in the sock. First one to get it gets a point for their team. So basic but really good fun!

Okaaaay · 26/12/2023 22:24

Brilliant - keep them coming. I’ve seen the sock game and wondered about that before!

Jackbox TV

My son set it up.

I really enjoyed the picture drawing games on it. There was also a Murder Trivia Party which was funny and whilst not that scary for children, I'd probably avoid playing it with them, as it's not particularly Christmassy

Youngman1267 · 26/12/2023 22:26

Empire- nothing to buy just Google it. We played multiple games last night with a 5 year old up to 70 year old. Great fun!

Another vote here for Ticket to Ride and Catan.
