To ask for your family game recommendations

What have you played this Christmas that’s proved a winner for your family of different ages? Perhaps something a little unusual.

We've been invited to join another family for NYE - they have children 11 and 13. We’re looking to take them a few gifts including a family game. They’re sporty, well educated and like a fun time. There will be people between the ages of 4 - 70 there on the night, though would like to get them something they might enjoy as a family.

We’ve played rapidough tonight with a similar age group.

That is not a hat is great. Also happy salmon - both got here for Christmas. Herd mentality good too.

Articulate might work well with a large group
Ticket to Ride is great but think max of 6 players

Articulate and Confident are both fun in a group. I love Catan and Ticket to Ride but both involve thought and strategy and aren't really 'party' games to me

Corks is great.

Slapzi also really fun. And herd mentality

My family - all adults - just discovered UNO this Christmas

We love Herd Mentality and Sussed. We got 'Taco cat goat cheese pizza' for Xmas and enjoyed playing that yesterday. It requires quick reactions so my youngest daughter did better than the adults!

Labyrinth. Really fun, 7/9/11 year olds all loved it yesterday, 5 yo found it a bit too hard (but really liked it once she had a grown up telling her what to do).

Codenames is great, though I've only played it with adults (I think tweens would be fine, but see what the reviews say about age as it's been exactly a year since I played it!)

Jackbox TV

My son set it up.

I really enjoyed the picture drawing games on it. There was also a Murder Trivia Party which was funny and whilst not that scary for children, I'd probably avoid playing it with them, as it's not particularly Christmassy

I love Jackbox, 10/10 recommend. There's something for everyone only downside is that kids might not have their own phones.
There are 10 party packs so far each with about 5 games and between 10 -20 quid on sale.

One thing I will say though is that most games are simple and what I call 'freeform/interaction' types bit like trivia, thinking up phrases, etc. There was also bowling etc but that's a bit hard with a phone

We've enjoyed Herd Mentality, Obama Llama and Ticket to Ride this Christmas.

frazzled22 · 26/12/2023 23:21

Not Scrawl! It's 17+ for a good reason, we played it with our young adult children but it's not a game I'd play with parents!

Throw throw burrito
Articulate
Ticket to ride
Five second rule (we come back to this all the time, simple, not too long, suitable for wide range of ages)

frozendaisy · 27/12/2023 15:59

Herd Mentality

MaryWhitehouseisCOOL · 27/12/2023 21:47
