How many people remember singing this song as kids? And Lily the Pink? Bananas in Pyjamas?

DH doesn't remember any of these, and it's making me sad.

Anyone joining me a little sing-along (cross-legged on the carpet, hoping the person next to you doesn't wet themselves today)?

I've made a Spotify list to play to my grandkids in the car from songs when I was little

Their favourites are

The Laughing Policeman
Paddy McGinty's Goat
O' Rafferty's Motor Car

and the song they call the Jam in the Shoe song which is
My Brother by Terry Scott

I love hearing all these again

CandyflossKid · 27/11/2023 21:17

Lots of memories here (at primary school in the 1970's)

Butteredtoast55 · 27/11/2023 21:25

There's a great YouTube video with a man who goes through all the hymns in Come and Praise to decide which ones are assembly bangers. It's great.
I make sure that, at my school, we sing every single day.

newtlover · 27/11/2023 21:35

does anyone remember Maggalina Haggalina? My DDs sang broght it home from primary school and I'd neve heard it before, I just googled and it seems quite widely known!

SausageinaBun · 27/11/2023 21:38

I feel like the odd one out, we had these at home and my mum played the piano while my brother and I sang. I don't think I ever sang these at school.

What a great day at school when Mrs Ritchie opens the book at Gobbolino the witch's cat.

My ship sailed from China, another floorfiller.

Where's your mama gone (where's your mama gone)
Little baby, Don? (Little baby, Don?)
Where's your mama gone? (Where's your mama gone?)
Far, far away
Where's your papa gone (where's your papa gone)
Little baby, Don? (Little baby, Don?)
Where's your papa gone? (Where's your papa gone?)
Far, far away
Far, far away-ay-ay-ay-ay
Last night I heard my mama singing a song
Ooh we, chirpy, chirpy, cheep, cheep
Woke up this morning and my mama was gone
Ooh we, chirpy, chirpy, cheep, cheep
Chirpy, chirpy, cheep, cheep chirp
Where's your mama gone (where's your mama gone)
Little baby, Don? (Little baby, Don?)
Where's your mama gone? (Where's your mama gone?)
Far, far away

Nellie the elephant pack her trunk
And said goodbye to the circus
Off she went with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
Now Nellie the elephant packed her trunk
And trundled off to the jungle
Off she went with a trumpety trump
Trump trump trump
The head of the herd was calling far far away
They met one night in the silver light
On the road to Mandalay

PiggieWig · 27/11/2023 21:51

I loved Gobbolino 💕

There was one in Singing Together about peanuts, set in Cuba.
Peanuts! They hear me cry
Peanuts! They all reply

And everyone cracked up at the line: Big jumbos, big double ones…

The Sloop John B was another banger from junior school.

At our School (and probably across Scotland) we used to have a different "theme" in music each term with song books and related materials. I remember one was Sea Shanties e.g. Johnny Todd, Farewell & Adieu to you Fair Spanish Ladies. I think another one was Calypso so Banana Boat Song, Kingston Town etc.

Anyone remember any more?

Not in Scotland, but I think my primary school ran similar themes.
Another theme being American songs - I've been working on the Railroad, Big Rock Candy Mountain, Camptown Races,

Also, A Windmill in Old Amsterdam; Streets of London; In Dublin's Fair City; I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane; and Doe-Ray-Me from The Sound of Music

Ooh yes, that one probably went with the American theme.

What shall we do with a drunken sailor?

Theres a hole in my bucket

munchbunch12 · 27/11/2023 16:29

Wow, I remember thinking that it seemed really old fashioned when I was singing it in the 80s/90s. What do today's children think of it?

They enjoy it and find it quite funny! I use quite a few of the older songs and they go down well!

wonkylegs · 28/11/2023 09:25

I have the brown Apusskidu book on my piano. When we cleared mums house I brought it from her piano where she played it for us as kids, to ours and now sing them with my youngest.

ThomasinaJones · 28/11/2023 09:57

OMG you're all amazing - this thread is reminding me of so many more primary school era/80s kids' songs!

@Saz12 coz she's yer mammy's mammy!
And... the odds against it reaching earth are 99 tae 1
