How many people remember singing this song as kids? And Lily the Pink? Bananas in Pyjamas?

DH doesn't remember any of these, and it's making me sad.

Anyone joining me a little sing-along (cross-legged on the carpet, hoping the person next to you doesn't wet themselves today)?

There was an MNer whose name was apusskidoo-ish, but I havent seen her around in a while.
I liked being reminded of the song.

sockarefootwear · 27/11/2023 17:19

I loved music time in Infant school- we had a lovely slightly hippyish teacher who would play guitar. I remember several Bony M songs and something that I assume was about racial harmony along the lines of 'The ink is black, the page is white, together we learn to read and write.' At junior school it was not as good- we sang folk songs from a book along to a recorded (I think perhaps from the radio) lesson. Can't remember what it was called. Infants was late 70s, juniors early 80s

DeepSownSeeds · 27/11/2023 17:21

@Talipesmum Yes, someone else who knows it Grin I still sing it today. I thought it was you bang a drum and you sing and strum because we used to do actions to it.

My sister and I keep leaving each other voice notes of playground songs or school assembly songs. Or adverts that you know all the words to because we only had 1 TV channel with adverts (kids these days don't know they're born) so everyone knew either the songs or all the words.

I came over all nostalgic and bought a copy a few years ago

We had this. It was called "Singing Together" and there was a radio programme each week that taught you the songs.

Oh my gosh - clearing out my dear mums house at the moment and found this last week - my old recorder book!
Loved singing in assemblies and sad that my dc don't seem to do much of this.

Though puff the magic dragon makes me cry every time. Dm has dementia now but still sings along to she'll be coming round the mountain, an old favourite of ours.

Was there a song about a woman with a glass eye, wooden leg etc in that one?

Oh you’re right - it was sing and strum - I always got it wrong as I misheard it age 5 and it stuck!

A wise old sardine let's out a warning,
Appuski Duski, Appuski Doo

When I was in Mrs Brumby's class our version of The Wombling Song was little short of legendary.

I went to a bog standard suburban primary school in the golden days of school music. We sang and sang and sang. We danced about the maypole, we had free 'cello lessons and recorder groups. We sang in class, in assembly, during wet play. We went to schools singing festivals, and sang carols in the church. Normally accompanied by a teacher on guitar, reliving his Glastonbury days.

It was absolutely wonderful and has given me a life long love of singing (which I've made a point of passing onto my kids)

DH went to a very posh prep school in central London and knows none of my primary school songs. It was all Panis Angelicus for them. His loss....

Exactly this. I sing everywhere now, my two eldest kids are proficient musicians and all love music. People often comment on the fact that we always have music playing. But I grew up in a school like this, singing in choir, and in church, and in assembly. My mum sang all these random old songs to us when we were kids, like I'm a Pink Toothbrush, and We're all going to the zoo tomorrow, probably from her own childhood.

And a hereditary love of music was born, and passed through the generations.

Did anyone do those mini musicals that had whole shows of songs to be performed?

We did one about Samson and Delilah, one about Columbus, and a further one about Perseus based on Greek Mythology.

Medusa the Gorgon... Off with her head!

NooNakedJacuzziness · 27/11/2023 19:55

This is all very Singing Corner - swing your pants (with the ele-phants)

backtowinter · 27/11/2023 20:03

Singing Together through a wall mounted radio

White Caballo was another one

Stumbleine · 27/11/2023 20:24

@Pixiedust49 yes, that's the one!

Oh wow, I half thought I'd imagined Apusski Dusky because no one seems to remember it!
Does anyone remember a song about a tractor that fired out fertiliser. "The vicarage minister's teetotal wife, got plastered for the very first time in her life!!!" This would have been late 80s.

My daughter now comes home singing "Alcohol will make you sick, make you sick, make you sick".

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/11/2023 17:01

I've been retired 9 years but I thought you still did have to have assembly every day. We didn't sing every day though that was once a week and we had a CD to sing along to.

Edited

There has to be daily collective worship in state schools still. This is interpreted in very loose ways. Most schools have assembly at least weekly.

Yes - I remember one that was Gobolino the Witch's Cat: "One dark night in a witch's cabin, two little kittens rolled onto the floor, one called Sootika was black all over, the other Gobolino had one white paw".
And one that was about Captain Cooke: "Now Captain Cooke the sailor called out one summer's day, let's all aboard the ship that's moored in yonder Plymouth Bay"!

OlgaDaPolgaThatsMeWheee · 27/11/2023 21:00

hoping that the person next to you doesn't wet themselves

Oh there was always one unfortunate child who made a puddle, wasn't there?

I remember Apuskididu (80s/early 90s childhood) and Junior Praise (Think of A World Without Any Flowers, When I Needed a Neighbour, I May Never March In The Infantry at al). We didn't sing Lily the Pink though I do know the song you mean. I wonder whether The Hollies were inspired by that song to write I Love Jennifer Eccles? No mention in that number of the freckles but did include the wolf whistles!

TicTac80 · 27/11/2023 21:05

Oh my! I love this thread! I remember singing a lot of these songs in the school I went to (in the Middle East!). We sang them in class and then in the playground. I've just read through these posts with a huge smile on my face, thank you for posting OP. I might try and get a couple of the books so I can sing them to my niece and nephew (and my kids, but they're a bit older). Failing that, I can just sign them to my siblings and we can reminisce on old times (or they can think that I've completely lost the plot) :D

Sidebeforeself · 27/11/2023 21:08

Child of the 70s here.. A Handful of Songs anyone? I loved singing at school but unfortunately I’m a shit singer
