So the underlying message here is for people to take responsibility for making sure their financial concerns are taken care of?
It's not exactly a secret that wills are necessary legal paperwork, is it? Especially if you know you've not got family.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:20

He says that, after deducting costs, the money goes to charity when in reality it's going towards the upkeep of his properties which are rented out for profit.
It's a little bit disingenuous to make people believe that it's going to good causes.

Was just going to post this story. Medieval is right!

User17239509 · 23/11/2023 19:23

The person should have done a will stating which charities to leave the money to

Celia24 · 23/11/2023 19:24

I remember reading about this a while back. Draconian nonsense from the royal family as usual.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/11/2023 19:27

1, Should have made a will, then.

2, At least the Crown isn't the direct cause of them being dead these days.

Sarahconnor1 · 23/11/2023 19:27

This isn't news, and there is straightforward and well known way to avoid it.

Just make a will.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:28

I imagine they thought their money was going to charity.

Ah yes. Stupid peasant. Their failure to write a will means that the King should of course take their estates rather than it being for the benefit of all.

Well that’s the first time I ever heard that.
I thought people dying with no relatives, the money would go back to the State, not the King!!

BabaBarrio · 23/11/2023 19:35

I suppose if they don’t like it, people can move to a different county where Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt will decide what to spend their life savings on instead of Charles III, or they can write a will.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:35

60 million in ten years is no small amount.

LeRougeEtLeNoir · 23/11/2023 19:36

@squareyedannie youre not the only one that finds it upsetting.
Too many things like this where you are made to believe that money is used one way and actually it isn’t but is used for the benefit if someone else.

I dislike this idea that the RF has all those privileges that come right from the Medieval Ages and it STILL hasn’t been updated.

It usually does. It’s only people dying in the Duchy of Lancaster or Cornwall where their assets do not go to the State.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:37

It's not the fact that they didn't make a will it's that they thought the money would be put towards good causes not lining an already rich-person's purse.

How do you know what they thought?

BabaBarrio · 23/11/2023 19:38

How do you know what they thought?

Well it seems many people who are discovering that are quite upset!!

User17239509 · 23/11/2023 19:39

The dead person was perhaps happy with their decision not to make a will, maybe the friends are moaning because they thought they should get a cut

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:39

@BabaBarrio They obviously knew where their money was going, and it's long been claimed that this money was going to support charities.

You have no idea what those people thought would happen.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:41

@wutheringkites They must have known that the property they owned was in The Duchy of Lancaster.

You would be surprised what people don't know. I find it's safest not to make assumptions, especially if they're dead.

I agree it's wrong for the King to profit from this though.

mauveiscurious · 23/11/2023 19:43

Make a will it's common knowledge it goes to the Crown
