Make a will it's common knowledge it goes to the Crown

But actually it seems that it’s only certain parts if tte country that are ‘affected’ by that rule.

So your common knowledge wrong just like those who didn’t know it would be handed to the Crown.

Well that’s the first time I ever heard that.
I thought people dying with no relatives, the money would go back to the State, not the King!!

Read the article. It's only if you live in the Duchies of Cornwall or Lancaster.

So weird that so many people do not get the point. The money was said to go to charity. Which part of this statement do people not understand?

That’s MN in it’s true form 😂😂
People will argue with you on one detail that wasn’t the point of your OP just because it fits their own agenda - like you have to have a will.
Never mind that many people don’t. Or never update their will despite changes. Or tte fact it wasn’t done properly so it’s actually worthless.

whatausername · 23/11/2023 20:09

Aw damn, now I feel bad about that tenner I gave him!

labamba007 · 23/11/2023 20:19

Finding the responses bizarre. Why on earth should this money go to the king. It should go to local charities in the area where they lived - north west could use it more than the bloody king!

AutumnFroglets · 23/11/2023 20:29

If you are bothered about where your money will go when you are dead then make a will. Other people shouldn't complain on your behalf if you didn't. I think I would rather the King get mine rather than people like Boris or Liz Truss tbh

Andthereyougo · 23/11/2023 20:31

The rich get richer……. Well, anyway they can really. Don’t care who they shit on. I’m joining Republic.

Well depending on where you die, it might.

Lancaster to the monarch
Cornwall to the PoW
Everywhere else, the government

Assuming no will and that no-one who would inherit under intestacy laws can be found.

So if you don't want that, make a will and nominate the person, charity or other organisation you would rather have it.

sparklefresh · 23/11/2023 20:47

It's been the way for many many years. It isn't a 'King Charles' thing, it's a monarchy thing.

BabaBarrio · 23/11/2023 20:50

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 19:39

@BabaBarrio They obviously knew where their money was going, and it's long been claimed that this money was going to support charities.

The people who have died intestate, how is it obvious they knew where their money was going after death? They weren’t alive when the article was written. Many people on this thread are suprised by this nugget of information. I didn’t think we can assume any of the people featured in the article knew their money would go to Charles III or thought it would be passed by him on to charity.

SamphiretheTervosaurReturneth · 23/11/2023 20:53

It's such a secret there are multiple programmes on many TV stations about it and the many companies who try to trace the heirs of people who die intestate

Like Heir Hunters

Bona Vacantia really isn't a secret and many other weird variants exist and have done for decades, centuries etc.

If you don't think about it, don't make a will etc then it obviously doesn't matter to you.

squareyedannie · 23/11/2023 20:54

@BabaBarrio The article has nothing to do with whether they knew where their money was going. If you live in this area, the chances are you know where your money is going when you die. It has long been known that this money would go to good causes via the Queen/King. Apparently, this is not the case and instead goes to the upkeep of the Crown's properties.

So it goes to the King and he profits from it. He supports his family so they can send their kids to Eton. Eton is a charity. Ergo the money has gone to charity.

I'm being tongue-in-cheek here but people need to stop having a wishy-washy notion that all charities benefit the needy.

Wolfpa · 23/11/2023 21:11

It’s hardly a secret what happens with the money. If you want the money to go to charity make a will that says so most charities will even write it for you.
