2 year old DS just said his first word

He will be 3 at the end of February. We were in the shop and I said thank you and bye to the shopkeeper and DS started waving and said bye. I was so shocked, I had a smile on my face all the way home🤣 Before this there had been so indication that he would start saying words. I hope this is the start of him talking. I’ve been worried for so long with him being almost 3 and having no words. I don’t know the point in this thread I’m just so happy I want to share it and I hope it gives hope to any other parents going through the same!

How cute 😍

You must be so pleased.

FromMilanToMinsk1 · 15/11/2023 09:20

I meant to add my DS didn't really say much till he was getting on for three either, so I wouldn't worry about that (though I'm sure I did at the time).

Once he started, he picked it up very quickly.

Twiglets1 · 15/11/2023 09:20

Aw that bought a smile to my face. The shopkeeper had no idea of the significance of that one little word.

This has made my day, OP! ❤️

Paintmybathroom · 15/11/2023 09:30

How brilliant, you must be so happy 😊

Watch him start coming out in full sentences now, bet he's been listening even if he hasn't said anything before!

OfDragonsDeep · 15/11/2023 09:30

That’s so lovely. My second DS has a speech delay, but over the last few months (he’s just over 4 now) his speech has come on so much. He’s chattering away now playing with his cars.

popplego · 15/11/2023 09:34

This is so lovely Smile my DS is 2 and is behind with his speech which worries me endlessly. This gives me hope 😍

cocoapple · 15/11/2023 09:37

@OfDragonsDeep awww bless him❤️

I’m so happy and proud of him I never thought I would wake up this morning and have this🥲 Just shows how they do take things in and although he’s still behind with his speech I now know that he can do it, looking forward to (hopefully) hearing more from him🥹

@popplego Awww I know the worry is awful isn’t it😩I truly didn’t think I’d ever hear his little voice, I think because DS1 spoke from quite a young age, I just had it in my head that he’d never talk. But now I know that it will happen in his own time and that’s fine. I’m glad it’s given you hope, I’m sure your DS will get there ☺️

@cocoapple, my MiL told me that her eldest didn’t say a word until he was 3. She was getting seriously worried, but once he started, it came out in whole sentences. He’d just been taking it all in and biding his time.

I don’t know whether it’s relevant that he eventually went on to win a scholarship to Cambridge.

jennyt82 · 15/11/2023 09:56

My youngest has a speech delay, he started nursery when he turned 3 and only had a handful of words. He's just turned 4 and over the last couple of months his language has just exploded, full sentences, asking questions he doesn't stop!
I was worried sick for a while but he was clearly listening all along!

LaurieStrode · 15/11/2023 09:59

Makes my day, OP! Do keep us updated. 💐

HappierTimesAhead · 15/11/2023 10:18

Wonderful news! Thank you for making me smile! My son was speech delayed as well so I know how worrying it can be. It took time but he's 5 now and he's caught up with his peers.

Mamato29192 · 15/11/2023 10:25

Aww this made me smile. So happy for you 🥰

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 15/11/2023 10:30

That’s lovely OP.

A friend of my mum’s had two little boys, about 3 years apart. The youngest said nothing until he was well over 2, and they were quite worried because the elder one was a proper chatterbox. One day she overheard the two boys talking to each other - turns out the younger had loads of words, but only used them with his brother!

MBappse · 15/11/2023 10:33

That's great! Gorgeous news. Thank you for sharing.

Do you have a Speech and Language referral? Just checking.

cocoapple · 15/11/2023 10:35

Awww it’s lovely to hear other people’s stories too, they love to worry us🫣🤣

@MBappse Yeah, we’re currently on the waiting list for the more than words course which SALT referred us to

That's really lovely! And a weight off your shoulders I would think. My dgs2 is two this month and doesn't speak much at all. He says a few words but isn't fussed about talking to us. He'll come and take my hand and take me to what he wants(usually food) and I have to offer suggestions until he says "ta." The words are coming slowly but nothing like his big brother who spoke for Scotland at the same age. I'm really pleased for you

By the time the appointment comes through your little boy will probably say, "that sounds boring, lets go to the park instead"

Amazing, I saw a similar thread recently, so nice to see late talkers getting some words.
Mine is 2, no words yet so it does bring hope!
