Quick! Weekend away, southern England. Where to?

Impromptu weekend away this weekend with DH. Where should we go within 3 hours of SW London?

Not bothered about fancy facilities or anything luxurious, just looking to escape. Ideally I'd like a room with a view and somewhere within walking distance of a pretty high street for a mooch through shops and to get dinner.

In my head it's perhaps a pub with rooms in a separate block so it's not noisy.

Don't mind either a sea views or a countryside view. I appreciate the desire for a view is slightly at odds with my desire to be able to walk to shops or dinner.

Any genius ideas?

Forgot to say - the rooms are gorgeous too and you get a free G&T

Various hotels in Brockenhurst - it’s a tiny high street, but you should be able to get a view, dinner, a mooch, and you could even get the train there.

Arundel is a nice little town, lovely pituresque buildings and surrounded by nice countryside so likely some good views to be had

The Pig Hotel in Madehurst is very near Arundel and has lovely views over vines (if your room is on that side). Arundel is lovely with the castle and cathedral and nice independent shops and cafes. Good walks and coast nearby.

Rochester. Stay at the Travelodge, it's brand new though the rooms are small. Nice river views all over town. Amazing castle and cathedral, intriguing history, pretty high street, decent places to eat.

@HJ40 didn't you like the one I posted in Bradford on Avon? That's in the countryside -

It looks really lovely but they only have small rooms left, DH is large!

Any of The Pig Hotels would be nice but not sure on cost.

All booked! (I've stayed at one before, still can't decide if it was worth the money, lovely though it was).
