Quick! Weekend away, southern England. Where to?

Impromptu weekend away this weekend with DH. Where should we go within 3 hours of SW London?

Not bothered about fancy facilities or anything luxurious, just looking to escape. Ideally I'd like a room with a view and somewhere within walking distance of a pretty high street for a mooch through shops and to get dinner.

In my head it's perhaps a pub with rooms in a separate block so it's not noisy.

Don't mind either a sea views or a countryside view. I appreciate the desire for a view is slightly at odds with my desire to be able to walk to shops or dinner.

Any genius ideas?

The Avon Gorge Hotel in Bristol has far ranging views but is in Bristol, yet close to The Downs and Ashton Court for walks.

Illegallyblonder · 08/11/2023 15:25

Budget? I've stayed at the hotel du vin at the Avon Gorge, it's ok. Nice view if you get a room with one and near shops and restaurants.

Rye?
Folkestone? - has got quite arty recently, Margate-style revival
Cotswolds

We enjoyed a short stay at the King's Head in Cirencester.
You have to park in a public pay carpark though.
Lots of nice shops and places to eat, good Roman history museum, stuff to do in general area.

I’d probably go to Windsor, do some nice riverside walks, there are lots of nice hotels and shops in Windsor and Eton

Portsmouth! Historic dockyard is excellent. Lots of pubs and shops close by. Spinnaker Tower. Spice Island. Sea view but not overly expensive.

Moonraker hotel in Bradford on Avon via Booking.com. £109 - lovely old school hotel. You can pop into Bath as only 8 mikes away (the Bath hotels are mental money even for rubbish on Fridays and Saturdays)

Bradford itself is lovely too and has some lovely restaurants and bars/pubs

LIZS · 08/11/2023 15:37

Lyme Regis?

HJ40 · 08/11/2023 15:37

Thank you.

Budget ideally no more than £150/night.

I'd prioritise views over being close to shops/restaurant as long as there's food on site for one evening. We can drives if needs be.

HJ40 · 08/11/2023 21:45

Struggling on finding views. I just want to be able to sit and read my book whilst looking out over some fields or the sea.

@HJ40 didn't you like the one I posted in Bradford on Avon? That's in the countryside -

ConchitaSmith · 08/11/2023 22:00

Any of The Pig Hotels would be nice but not sure on cost.

Phineyj · 08/11/2023 22:06

Alfriston is lovely. Went there in half term. Wonderful countryside, near the sea, great pubs, interesting shops and a cute National Trust property. And free parking and lots of loos!
