white kitchen cabinets views please... " a brave choice?"

Planning our new kitchen. Modern style , no cupboard handles, sleek, its quite a large kitchen, getting rid of the pain in the arse dumping ground island and having a penisular unit and table and chairs instead . We had planned matt white cabinets with mid grey quartz worktops but im having doubts now and planner just called it a " brave choice"! He feels the white flat door cabinets look too clinical ( think hospital or vets) and will show every crumb or streak and need lots of cleaning to keep looking good.

interested in views please of pure crisp white cabinets pros or cons pls.

if you chose this option some time ago are you still happy with choice/

We need a light colour ( replacing a dark wood effect and its a north west facing room with only good natural light in mornings) . I was keen to avoid grey, ivory or cashmere... but he has suggested a platinum colour that looks quite nice... and he says will look alot better.

Kitchen are hard arn't they and its so much money I just wanted to ask the wise ones on mumsnets views! . Thanks in advance. All opinions welcome.

We have light-grey cabinets and white corian surfaces. I love it in the summer, it looks really bright & fresh, but it can feel cold in winter. We have a lot of bright pictures, fairy-lights, wooden floor etc to warm it up.

Tarmaced · 07/11/2023 15:54

Are matt units easier to keep clean? I'd be worried about grease marks from fingerprints, like I've seen in kitchen showrooms on matt doors.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 07/11/2023 16:05

@Tarmaced ive genuinely never had any issue with marks on mine, I don’t feel that I need to clean them down any more than when I had wooden doors in my old house

@CoQ10 yours sounds amazing!

Ours is gloss winter white, so warmer. It's lovely and not particularly hard to keep clean.

AudiobookListener · 07/11/2023 16:50

I have: white cabinets with matt white doors. Matt white walls and woodwork. Large matt white tiles. Dark brown oak effect flooring. Worktops are 'speckled stone' laminate which is mostly pale grey. Looks absolutely fab, super clean, light and uncluttered. Some of us like the clinical look. :)

Stresa22 · 07/11/2023 16:53

I have white matt units on the bottom and oak effect on the top. Yes the bottom gets some streaks but those are mostly from my husband’s coffee machine. A wipe down works wonders.

Stresa22 · 07/11/2023 16:54

Also the mixed materials mitigates the clinical effect of the white.

smilesup · 07/11/2023 16:57

We have white gloss with wooden tops and sage tiles. Looks brilliant after 4 years still. DIY kitchens despite having 4 kids, 3 dogs and being heavily used it has not one don't/scratch mess on the cupboards. It's relatively small which might make a difference.

Thank you. Yes, it is. I flipped a million times and at one point was looking at white gloss. I'm v happy with what I've got as it's also unique. That also appeals to my 'standing out from the crowd' vibe!

Mydogisagentleman · 07/11/2023 18:07

We have a white gloss handleless kitchen.
I love it.
I don't think that it shows finger prints

OurfriendsintheNE · 07/11/2023 18:11

I love my gloss white cabinets. Much easier to keep clean than the ones I’ve had in the past which were shaker style. I have wooden worktops though to give the room more warmth.

My friend has a matt white kitchen you can see every single greasy finger mark, it’s awful and seems to be ingrained on the surface, at least with a gloss coating it’s easy to buff up.

bombastix · 07/11/2023 18:19

I did this and rate it highly. It is unbelievably easy to keep clean and maintain. Colour can be done in other ways to offset the white cupboards.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 07/11/2023 18:21

We moved into a white gloss kitchen, virtually new and quite big. I didn’t much like it but there were other things to think about , and lockdown restricted what could be got done.

I like it much more than I expected, mainly because the gloss reflects the light ( it’s north facing but has huge windows) . At night we have very bright lighting ( we don’t eat in it , just cook) and that bounces off as well. Like PP, I quite like a kitchen you could do brain surgery in ( in the words of the electrician who put up the lights). The work tops are white corian, I would change them to a dark light reflecting quartz lay on but I can’t be bothered really. I have had painted, real wood, Matt cream and Matt distressed fake wood, all installed by me in various houses, and I wouldn’t replace the gloss white with Matt here.

handless though…argh! How do you avoid finger prints?

Makemydaypunk · 07/11/2023 18:29

Personally I don’t like white flat fronted units when everything else is really modern as well such as the sink, oven etc as I think it looks like a laboratory but I love the juxtaposition of flat fronted units with wooden work surfaces and traditional appliances and other touches.

I like white kitchens, sounds a great choice to me.

PurBal · 07/11/2023 18:41

Used to have white in our previous house, now have grey. Really really wish we’d gone for white again.

Ihateslugs · 07/11/2023 18:41

Here’s my part finished kitchen, the units are not white but kind of off white called porcelain. The worktops will be a mid to dark grey colour with silver sparkle and the floor will be a dark grey Karndean tile with no grouting or border. So far it looks really good, very bright even though it gets little direct sunlight and I love the shine that reflects what light there is. I’m planning on sage green for the walls but cannot quite decide if that is too dark so might go for a mint green instead.

I have a peninsula seating area for two people tucked away round the corner which will have black chairs.

Ignore the blind, that is the old one.

We inherited flat white gloss kitchen units9. We have a charcoal gloss tiles on the floor and a matt charcoal laminate marble effect worktop.

Wouldn't have been my first choice as it is a bit dull (and the worktop is nasty and cheap). We have warmed it up a bit with very pale cream/ yellow walls (dulux morning light) and a big Sanderson Dandelion print blind.

I bave grown to like it over the years as it is a very small galley kitchen so needs to be unfussy and clean. Hate that bloody worktop though!

AddictedToBooks · 07/11/2023 18:50

We've got white kitchen cabinets and I adored them at first - now I can't stand them and desperately want to change them. They show up every single little mark and mine have also begun to yellow with age even though they're not that old.
Would a sage green or an applewhite work for you? This is what I'm thinking of changing my kitchen to.

Barnowlsandbluebells · 07/11/2023 18:56

A white kitchen can look stunning in the right space. Too many people have them in dull, featureless houses when they contribute to the lack of interest.

itsmeafterall · 07/11/2023 19:02

I've got Matt white and stainless steel worktops. It's lovely. Easy to keep clean and goes with all colours.

I've warmed it up with some natural wood and an almost black wall and millions of plants.

It looks lovely and far from clinical.

@omega4ever I have white gloss cabinets and a grey quartz worktop. I love it. I thought about having grey cupboards and a white quartz work top but I was panicking about the work top staining. My kitchen is nice a light and clean looking. Also faces the north . Xx

Same as my mums and it's 15 years old but it's really still looking fab.
