I am going abroad on holiday and big hotels take a payment for any damages occured. I do not have a debit card as I lost it. I do not have a credit card. I only have cash. A friend of mine said the hotel need a card payment. They will not take cash. The travel agent said they will probably take a cash payment if I do not have a caard. Does anyone know. The agent said just because my friend said they will not accept cash literally means they will waive the fee and not take any payment/ The travel agent have emailed the hotel to ask

how many more times do i need to say. I do not want a virtual card

Fine. Perhaps the hotel won't want you to check in with them then. How are they supposed to take payment without a valid card?

You've been given loads of helpful suggestions and you've been very rude to other posters who are only trying to help you.

I'm older than you and I'm capable of understanding that the world functions differently to how it did in your parents' day.

Wiii · 05/09/2023 06:46

I get that you're stressed but jests Christ you're so rude to people who tried to help.

Maybe cancel your holiday if you're in that much of a state.

rookiemere · 05/09/2023 06:53

You are presumably on your way, but I would suggest ringing the hotel and taking as much cash as you can. Hotel may let you stay with an extra cash guarantee.

I’ve been abroad and had my card frozen during a trip so didn’t work at check in. Thanks Barclays! The room was prepaid and the hotel took a cash deposit from me of 100 dollars and I couldn’t charge anything to the room. This was in a radisson.

Maddy70 · 05/09/2023 07:05

Wise is a card on your phone. It's instant and you pay really low exchange rates so a better option thsb cash anyway.

Most do only accept cards. Lots of places abroad only accept card payments.
I live in Spain and increasingly you see card-only payments in shops and restaurants so I would be prepared (there are also some that are cash only definitely not dodging tax

LaPerduta · 05/09/2023 07:10

Well I hope you're going on holiday on your own as I certainly wouldn't want to be your travelling companion.

You are stressed because you are not listening to advice. This is a simple fix. Use an online account such as Wise. It's an instant 10-minute job setting up the account. Then you have a virtual card. You don't need an iPhone any smartphone will do.

PegasusReturns · 05/09/2023 07:12

Given your unwillingness to consider the very sensible option of a virtual card then I guess you’re just going to have to pray to whichever god you believe in and hope for best.

Wallywobbles · 05/09/2023 07:18

You can easily open a wise account and get a virtual credit card on your phone in the time available. You'll need proof of who you are to upload. But it took me around an hour to do.

SallyWD · 05/09/2023 07:24

If you lost a credit card your bank can replace it within a couple of days. I don't understand how you can survive without a card these days. Surely you have a debit card - how do you get money out of the bank?

Flute56 · 05/09/2023 08:29

Caspianberg · 05/09/2023 05:56

Well yes, but that’s your options.

  1. you need to go in into actual bank with appointment and sort debit and credit card
  2. get a phone with internet. Get apps and virtual card - it’s quick
  3. use friends card if travelling with them and own them big time
  4. cancel

its 2023. It’s life now. Without phones with video, cards, apps, life is going to get very hard. I have just had to sort my 92 grandfather out with iPad as he can only make doctors appointments by app now, and needed camera for Face ID call for something important government wise. It’s was pretty easy, and he’s using it for loads of stuff for make life easier.

You can’t simply leave modern life, but also expect to continue benefiting from stuff like foreign travel without adjusting

ffs I have already been into the bank to sort out a debit and credit card. Did you not read my post and dfor the other person who said how do I get by without a debit card. I use a debit card and I laost it Jesus people are not reading my posts

for the umpteenth time and for the benefit of those who are confused. I only have a debit card. I lost it so I had to order a new one. At the same time i ordered a CREEDIT card

Is this clear enough for anyone reading. I have said all this before.

Now i have to work and then have an appointmet and I do not want a virtual card

you have said your cards won't get there before you leave, so the fact that they have been ordered is irrelevant.
You have no credit or debit cards for this trip. So your options are:

  • call the hotel ask if they let you check in without a card. If no, you need to either
  • get a virtual card, even if you don't want to.
  • cancel holiday
rookiemere · 05/09/2023 08:37

Have you called the hotel OP?
This could be resolved one way or the other with a five minute call.

God. You're rude.

JorisBonson · 05/09/2023 08:41

Jesus wept. Just don't go. You're hard work.

RabbitsRock · 05/09/2023 08:44

LaPerduta well said!

AuntieMarys · 05/09/2023 08:46

Well you're fucked then. Stay at home and enjoy the heatwave.

LIZS · 05/09/2023 08:47

They might be willing to take a cash deposit or hold your passport as security. Presumably the travel and hotel is prepaid through the TA. Are there extras like drinks you may charge to the room?

The only thing that's confusing is how someone in their 50s can act like such a petulant child towards people trying to help them. Good luck on your holiday, hopefully it helps you to chill out.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 05/09/2023 09:09

Contact the hotel. Don't waste time on MN talking to people who cannot know what the hotel's policy is. You can't be the first guest who's lost their card.

No, the only thing that's confusing is why the OP is on MN with this when she could have contacted the hotel and resolved the whole matter then and there.

HakunaMatiÅ‚da · 05/09/2023 09:14

The way you have spoken to people on this thread makes me a firm believer in karma.

rookiemere · 05/09/2023 09:15

Actually maybe give someone the hotel details and let them phone up. If you are similarly responsive to the hotel staff as you have been to people here, they are unlikely to do you the favour you need to bend their policies.

mondaytosunday · 05/09/2023 09:20

But you don't seem to get that having a virtual card may be the only solution!
People have read your posts but you seem to refuse to take on any advice that will get you out of your situation. You don't need an iPhone - most people don't have one. The virtual cards people have mentioned are all well known and reliable.
Have you rung the hotel and asked for their policy and if they will take cash? Don't listen to your friend - call the hotel yourself.
Instead of staying up all night stressing and being rude this could all have been sorted if you'd just taken the advice offered.
