Is an anglepoise lamp worth paying the extra for

Hi

i am looking for a new lamp for a side table/ desk. I love the look of anglepoises and have had “copies” in the past . Are they worth buying the real thing?

Any recommendations for similar but cheaper .

thanks

They are fab and will last a lifetime. Take a look on gumtree or marketplace for a second hand bargain.

This one from Habitat looks good though https://www.habitat.co.uk/product/7073841

I love an anglepoise, I had one growing up and didn't appreciate it until I've had a series of cheap shitty lamps.

Nearest I've come is one I found is one similar to this https://www.castlegatelights.co.uk/eglo-lighting-49469-priddy-single-light-table-lamp-made-of-steel-in-black-finish-p36505

Have you got that one ? How does it compare . Thanks .

Our best desk light is from Ikea, had it years. I think you are paying for the "name", I wouldn't bother.

JaninaDuszejko · 30/08/2023 14:05

If you buy second hand then remember to rewire (or buy from someone who has rewired although you pay a premium for that).

Vinterior is good for vintage stuff although you will realise that you can end up paying more for an old lamp than a new one. And that also shows why you pay more for the 'name', it doesn't lose value so you can always sell it on later whereas a cheaper light you'll have to give away.

We have one that my husband was bought, I think, for his 18th. It's now 30 years old and still going strong.

evtheria · 30/08/2023 14:13

My dad loves reminding me that the Anglepoise on his desk was a second hand find during the 70s, still working and extremely robust. It is one of the huge sizes though.

I think buy it if you genuinely like the style, as you can always sell it later or pass it on to a design loving friend/relative.

WannabeMarieKondo · 30/08/2023 14:38

I do love the design, the copies are not the same . I presume the quality is much better ?

is it just the name ? To me the design is beautiful and it seems the quality is excellent ?

I think I will buy new if get one . But would love a vintage one , but more issues with ensuring genuine etc .new Will have a guarantee.

thanks

Have had mine for about 8 years now, waited until it was on offer and wanted an original as it's a design classic and I planned to have it for life. Gets used 5 days a week and feels more robust than the non Anglepoise ones I've had or seen.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 30/08/2023 14:57

I have a Serious Readers floor lamp which is the same price point and I love it.

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/08/2023 15:11

If you can get your hands on a genuine Herbert Terry one, grab it with both hands and don't get rid of it.

RedRedCampion · 30/08/2023 15:20

Definitely worth it! Worth it for the design, the beauty, the fact that they go in any room, go with any style and you'll keep it for ever! I've collected the gold marbledy ones over the years and love them. There are lots of the iconic Herbert Terry 1227 lamps on eBay, you can get a refurbished one or a cheap one that needs rewiring. Anglepoise itself offers a rewire service with a lifetime guarantee.

Another mention of Herbert Terry, so what’s special about this version and what should I be aware of looking on eBay ? Thanks

I put Anglepoise into John Lewis search and they came up around the £300 mark.

Herbert Terry & Sons produced the first anglepoise lamps back in the 1930s.

Ah ok, when did they stop making them do you know ? They seem to have a different base . I like them . But presume not made anymore ? Thanks .

Just noticed there are some on Brandalley - even some floor lamps!

I see I bought mine in 2015 for £110 from John Lewis, it was in the January sale, it's now £219, crikey.
