For some weird reason I have heard two unusual surnames today , Younghusband and Gotobed . Which ( in a light hearted way ) could be used to formulate a sentence -
" Gotobed younghusband !
What unusual ones do you know ?

There was a bloke on Gardener's World I think, called Bob Flowerdew, very apt. Anyone remember?

There was a girl at school with the surname Cockburn which she insisted was pronounced co-burn… don’t blame her!
And a Higginbottom which we had to pronounce -botham apparently.

I like Popadec and Pendergast but not sure how unusual they are!

It is. Cockburn street in Edinburgh pronounced Coburn

Not unusual in the name, it actually must be a popular enough name but my best friend and her fiancé have the same surname. Will work handy when they marry as neither will need to chance their name.

I once had dealings with a Mrs Sithole through work. I honestly think i'd have changed by deed poll if it were me.

My surname (by marriage) is incredibly rare and I can usually see people trying to smother their laughter when they hear it 🥴

I worked with a Clutterbuck which is an excellent old English name.

But everyone from Orkney or Shetland knows a Twatt (pronounced Twot).

There is a solicitor in Scotland, MacSporran. I don t know if there are many of them, but it is so, almost comically, Scottish.

mháthairtalmhan · 04/08/2023 20:42

I have an unusual surname and I love it. Anyone with the surname is related to me. I joined a large organization and within a month I received an email from a fellow surname bearer, thus discovering another relative😃

Makepeace - she was very calming and level headed, it really fit! She'd often comment that we'd never met her brother who by all accounts was a little...lairy.

Seasideanticscanleadtosandybuckets · 04/08/2023 20:47

Just a scowly face!
