For some weird reason I have heard two unusual surnames today , Younghusband and Gotobed . Which ( in a light hearted way ) could be used to formulate a sentence -
" Gotobed younghusband !
What unusual ones do you know ?

I don't want to reveal my own surname, but it's so rare that anyone else with it is either a relative of my husbands or married to one!

Same!!

Freshair1 · 04/08/2023 19:44

I come from the south so I say my surname with the southern inflection which causes no end of confused faces when spoken in the North West.

Dombasle · 04/08/2023 19:45

I knew a lovely woman in the 80s who's maiden name was Bloodworth which she hated and when she married she became Cuddy.

Also know a few people with the surname Salmon which i think is quite unfortunate... (sorry if you have this surname!)

Haddock, Sturgeon or Whale

CurlewKate · 04/08/2023 19:46

There are Gotobeds in a Lord Peter Wimsey story.

orangegato · 04/08/2023 19:47

I’ve met a Custard before. And a Bogey.

I’m really immature and deal with a lot of people so a silly name is a highlight for me.

StopFeckingFaffing · 04/08/2023 19:48

I've met a Mr Crapper

I honestly think I'd change my name!

MarmiteRoasties · 04/08/2023 19:49

Used to work with a Gotobed. His first name made it funnier.
Rimmer always makes me chuckle.
once met a Bunincherry. That was cute.
Once dated a Hoare 😳- deffo wasn’t going to marry him!

Christmasbird · 04/08/2023 19:49

I knew a Mrs Sourbutts 😂

ScarletWitchM · 04/08/2023 19:49

Someone in my old company had the surname Cakebread which I thought was really unusual

romdowa · 04/08/2023 19:50

My husbands surname is so rare that if you share it then you are somehow related to him.

KirstenBlest · 04/08/2023 19:51

I know people called Crapper, Couch, Gotobed, Goodenough, Scattergood and Trebelcock.
Gotobed is Gotto-bed not Go to bed, Trebelcock is Trebb Elcock not Treble cock.

ScarletWitchM · 04/08/2023 19:52

Also lived near a family who added a ‘ to their surname to make it O’nion, and my BIL family was Bucket (like Hyacinth 😂) but changed it by Deed Poll to Beckett

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 04/08/2023 19:52

I worked with a Dr Onion. I also once saw a name in a paper: Dr Richard Titball. i.e. Dick Titball. Poor man 🤣

Longwhiskers · 04/08/2023 19:53

I’ve known a Winepress and a Drinkwater. Would be fun if they married and hyphenated their name!

AutumnalPumpkin · 04/08/2023 19:59

PickledMuffin · 04/08/2023 19:13

scattergood and De-ath
i'm sure there's others i have forgotten!

I came here to say I knew a Mr Death... but apparently it was "de - ath" 🤣

UnfortunateTypo · 04/08/2023 20:00

I have some Gotobed’s in my tree, great Fen name! I also recently came across the Drinkmilk’s.

SorrowsPrayers · 04/08/2023 20:00

I had a friend with the surname Cowmeadow. His father was a vicar. Rev. Cowmeadow. Love it!
However, friend didn't like it so changed his name to Meadows.
Fool!

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 04/08/2023 20:00

I went to school with an Onions and she used to wear her hair in a spiky topknot like a spring onion.

I'm another with a name that only relatives have but there is a diaspora in the US who changed the spelling a bit.

There was a teacher on the Ilse of Man who was called Mr Shaw-Twilly.

I work a bit with the electoral register and love looking for unusual names!

dontgobaconmyheart · 04/08/2023 20:09

I've met a few Cakebreads (same family) and Gotobed isn't new to me either.

A friend's maiden name before she married and took her husbands bog standard surname was 'Rainbow'.

My DM's maiden name was fairly unusual but at the same time not very exciting or humorous - just not something I've ever met or seen another person have outside of known relations. I can't really say it as it's also my own surname but not sure anyone's missing much at the same time.

ClinkyWotsit · 04/08/2023 20:09

Mr and Mrs Wanke, my parents next door neighbours when I was a child. Pronounced Van-key.

Noizettely · 04/08/2023 20:11

IScreamAtMichaelangelos · 04/08/2023 19:52

I worked with a Dr Onion. I also once saw a name in a paper: Dr Richard Titball. i.e. Dick Titball. Poor man 🤣

But if you don’t shorten it to Dick then it’s not an issue.

I have met professionally a Richard Motion, a Richard Dicker and a Richard Moulding.

Never once did they even think about shortening their name.

Halo8 · 04/08/2023 20:11

I’m pretty much related to everyone with my maiden name. I escaped into anonymity by taking dh’s common one though!

RandomMess · 04/08/2023 20:13

I'm one of 800 worldwide - doesn't seem many.
