Paranormal? Hearing ice cream van music at night

Just wondering if anyone has experienced this, it’s very very strange and quite unusual and I don’t know what to make of it.

A couple of years ago my then 14 year old DD told me she would be lying in bed at night and would hear ice cream van music which would last a few seconds. She said it scared her a lot. I kind of dismissed it putting it down to any one of many rational explanations ie maybe someone was walking down the street and it was their phone, maybe it was our next door neighbours (we live in a semi).

Over the years she would tell me about this music which would play at random times but always at night. She said she would be crying under the covers she was so scared as the music was loud and came out of nowhere. Again I kind of dismissed it.

Until I heard it myself. DH, DD and I got home late last night about 1 am and we’re standing in the kitchen talking and all of a sudden this scary ice cream van music starts playing. DD is kind of paralysed with fear and starts screaming “did you hear it, that was the music I’ve been hearing in my room for years”.

Cant really think of a logical reason as to where this music was coming from. The neighbours are away on holiday so not them, we were in the kitchen so no one walking past with a phone etc.

Has anyone experienced this?

Seriously? Someone says “ice cream van” and people think “paranormal”? I despair.

In fairness, 1am in your own living room aren't exactly normal circumstances in which to encounter someone trying to flog a Mr Whippy.

@tootallfortheshelf three people experiencing the same hypnagogia or rem intrusion at the same time??

Sometimes I hear a phone ringing when I am alone upstairs in the house at night.
It's not mine.
We don't have a land line and it's a detached house.

That’s spooky. Is it an old-fashioned landline ring or a mobile ring?

Could you have an old baby monitor that is still plugged in somewhere or do you use Echo Dots/Google Nests or similar? I wonder if you're just picking up a random device that is on the same frequency 🤔

Jifmicroliquid · 05/08/2023 16:42

Neighbours washing machine making that little song?
It must have a rational explanation, I doubt you are being haunted by an ice cream van.

liondreams · 05/08/2023 19:12

@Jifmicroliquid oh yes like the samsung washing machine song, that's a thought.

Jujubes5 · 05/08/2023 19:35

What is the tune ?
The one above is Yankee Doodle, our local one was London Bridge is falling down.

Jujubes5 · 05/08/2023 19:36

Do neighbours have a baby -some strange baby monitor link???

Jujubes5 · 05/08/2023 19:38

My Samsung washing machine plays The Trout by Schubert

winewolfhowls · 05/08/2023 20:17

Checking in to see what the tune is

MissHoollie · 05/08/2023 20:20

I don't think there is an explanation.
People are saying phone.. drug dealers but it's gone on for years .

curaçao · 05/08/2023 20:25

A neighbour kid's toy

Why has that made me laugh so much?

Also what absolute monster decided to make washing machines play smug little tunes just because they have finished doing their job? I don't start doing the 1812 overture just because I've completed a spreadsheet.

winewolfhowls · 05/08/2023 22:17

Well maybe you should 😁

Oof, @mindutopia, an unexpectedly reactivated Furby's quite spooky enough by itself!

Happened once in my house when my sister was house sitting for us, middle of the night, weird noises and talking, scared the absolute bejeezus out of her 😂 She finally worked out that it was coming from a Furby which had been sitting completely silently on a shelf for months!!

I might you know. Cannon, bells, the lot.

Anyway. OP have you all been captured by a drug dealing ghost with a sideline in Mivvys or wot?

newfloorplease · 06/08/2023 09:02

@Andante57 it's an old fashioned telephone ring.
When I say detached, it's suburban detached so a couple of feet between houses.

kwetu · 13/08/2023 23:45

You don't happen to have a power tool battery charger in u you our house do you? We had something similar haunted me at random times for months, it turned out to be the makita batteries telling me fully charged.

SheerLucks · 13/08/2023 23:56

It may be just some teens driving around your neighbourhood playing this for a laugh:

LookingForFreeDoughnuts · 14/08/2023 00:25

I hear phones ringing from time to time, sometimes at home but usually when out and about. I've always assumed it was someone's mobile ringtone, but maybe I'm haunted and didn't know it. I'm amused at the thought of a frustrated poltergeist with limited haunting skills, trying but failing to freak me out. 👻

I love that tune. I wish my machine played that. Or some other Schubert lieder, maybe Heidenroslein or Die Jung Nonne.

As well as a washing machine playing Schubert lieder, I now want a Mivvi. It's 3.20am, and I want a Mivvi. Or three.

OP, please speak to us. Was it the local drugs baron in the end? The Mafia? Or a demented Furby?

Spinningjenny23 · 14/08/2023 08:51

Alarm, someone trying out a new mobile phone ring? Our Alexa once went a bit mad in the middle of an early episode of Stranger Things and announced in a Mystic Meg sort of voice that my friends were playing tricks on me....as partner was on night shift I gave the dratted AI a sharp telling off but she's quite old now and selectively deaf.... she regularly comes out with random batsh*t....

All 3 of us definitely heard it. I was making a cup of tea at the time, DH and Dd just chatting to each other then all of a sudden a loud burst of music playing the ice cream van tune. DDs face turned white and DH and I were like “what the hell was that”?
