Hey has anyone ordered the naked cake from m&s, and did you like it? How did you decorate it? Would you mind sharing pics if you did?

Or am I being daft getting a birthday cake from them?Naked cake from m&s

I bought a similar one from Sainsbury’s which was £23 I think. I decorated it with strawberries and raspberries and a happy birthday thing from Etsy.

We had this cake for my daughter’s christening, it was delicious and definitely served at least 40. We just put a simple cake topper on it

kkneat · 29/07/2023 17:53

I bought the two tire chocolate one for my mum’s 70th. I bought a personalised cake topper from Etsy, made some ganache to drip and used other ball decorations that I reuse. It looked fab & way cheaper than ordering a personalised one. I knew I didn’t have the time to bake & think it wouldn’t have been much cheaper to bake it myself

We did this for our wedding cake! Just bodged some edible flowers on and voila. It was great!

It's really good value then!

thatsn0tmyname · 29/07/2023 18:10

Why are so many foods naked these days?

watersprites · 29/07/2023 18:10

the M&S cake is £45 so I wasn’t suggesting it could be baked for £6.Yes I could bake that for £15.

£15 to serve 36?

AndrexPuppy · 29/07/2023 18:14

I’ve had made to order cakes from both M&S & Waitrose in the last 12mo and found them both horribly sweet.

My homemade cakes are utter shite, but shop bought fancy ones seem to be dreadful.

nameXname · 29/07/2023 18:27

Ye gods! £45 for a bit of sponge and sickly buttercream?

Cakes are so easy to make - and who really likes the decorations? - so long as you follow a trusted recipe. The ingredients are not dirt cheap but you could make two or three really really good (and wholesome) victoria sponges - using real butter and fresh cream and jam and maybe fruit, too - for that sum.

A friend of mine who is a former domestic science teacher told me the simple secret of cake making. Be precise. Be accurate. Follow the recipe (from a trusted source eg Delia or Nigella). If you're making a casserole, a carrot here or there does not matter. But when making a cake, quantities really do.

Totally misread the title and was Shock at the thought of a naked caFe, even if it's not just a naturist cafe, but an M&S naturist cafe.

I bought this for my DS birthday. It was fantastic! They provide it in 2 separate pieces so you will have to put it together. I bought the decorations and had his name made on a plaque from Etsy and added some dried flowers. It looked great and the quotes I got for 2 tier cakes were well over £200 so it saved me a fortune!

brokenlore · 29/07/2023 20:18

If I was pushed for time maybe, but to be fair I bake and have made a fair few wedding cakes, and it definitely doesn't look professional! It's the kind of cake I'd expect to see at our local summer fate in the cake tent. It has a slightly 'dog licked the icing' look to it!

JenniferL27 · 29/07/2023 20:25

Yes, we had this at my daughters christening. We bought some decorations and it looked/tasted lovely.

Dermadirj · 29/07/2023 20:50

@Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals love how your decorated that! How did you attach the balls? And did you make the chocolate strawbs yourself or buy them in? Thanks for sharing a pic!

@Duckingella ohhh! Hadn't spotted those, thanks!

The cakes for my daughters first birthday party and so far I've got a number 1 candle and a bunting cake topper with her name on it. Those flowers might look nice here and there.

@Dermadirj i had this for my Dds 5th birthday 2 weeks ago! It was honestly perfect. Fed way more than 36, more like over 60 (30 children, their parents plus some family!). I added icing myself (frozen themed) and it turned out amazing. I’d been quoted £200 for s similar size one with a local baker so it was a more affordable alternative for me. As other pp said - no way could I make a cake that perfectly shaped!

WeAreTheHeroes · 30/07/2023 06:54

These cakes are good value if you don't want to bake yourself. Yes, you can make the same at home for less, but you're not including the cost of your time in the equation. @fyn what was disgusting about the cake you ordered?

Fairyliz · 30/07/2023 07:21

fyn · 29/07/2023 16:54

I recently purchased a made to order M&S cake, it was disgusting. Pretty but basically inedible!

Yes me too.
I can actually make cakes that are tasty but look a bit wonky so bought one from M & S for a special occasion.
It looked fabulous but tasted really weird and artificial, not just sweet but an odd chemical taste.

GabriellaMontez · 30/07/2023 08:30

Yes we had the single one. It was delicious. It all got eaten. It looked amazing. I can't find a finished photo but it's nearly done on this one. The gold leaf was really effective.

My friend had this at her wedding, she had her own topper and we decorated it with fruit. I have to say it looked amazing and was the best wedding cake I’ve tasted!!

Dermadirj · 30/07/2023 09:25

@GabriellaMontez thanks for sharing a pic, it looks lovely! You're right the gold leaf really works. Where did you get it, and do you just apply it by hand or with a brush?

Dermadirj · 30/07/2023 09:25

@Scotty80 thanks! Was it berries?

MonumentalLentil · 30/07/2023 09:38

For that price I would expect it not to contain palm oil. In fact there is no need for palm oil in food at all.

I would buy one otherwise but I like decorating things.

GabriellaMontez · 30/07/2023 09:40

I bought 30 sheets of edible gold leaf from amazon. It was about £12. It would be difficult to do without a brush. Or maybe that's just me. I don't usually do cakes. But I really enjoyed doing this.
